PITT Recognizes the Real Victims @ Halftime

Like introduce them by name and trot them out to the 50 yd line and recognize them because they were a victim of sexual abuse?

Somehow that idea also seems a little traumatic.

that is exactly what Child abuse victims would want...recognized. Yikes! Penn state fans are nutty but some of ours may be worse

If Pitt had any guts, they'd have a moment of silence before the football game to remember victims of abuse, assault, and rape in order to remind the crowd that the basic dignity and welfare of the weak should never be trampled in the pursuit of achievement, athletic or otherwise.

Of course, Pitt is like so many other schools, is beholden to money first, and they would never have the guts to do something like that out of fear of offending away a remote chance to extend their financial windfall.

We shouldn't be playing these cretins past the two originally scheduled games, and every callous quote from their president, or attempt to re-raise graven statuary or honor the horrific actors in that sad saga reinforces that notion. Shame on Barnes for publicly expressing a desire to extend it.

I don't really see Pitt honoring Penn State fans at halftime.

There should be canning to collect money for child abuse victims at every gate and wandering through tailgating.
PSU already did that. At the first home game after the scandal broke. They raised a whopping $17,000. Nice of the PSU fans to be so generous as to donate a whole 17 cents per person for a cause that at that exact moment should've been on everyone's mind. I'm 100% certain that if I walked around the tailgates with a can collecting for the Jerry Sandusky defense fund, I'd have gotten more than 17 cents per person.

If everyone on Saturday donated just $4.09 cents and 70k people show up, thats $286,300 that could go to that worthwhile charity that only supports PA victims.

Man Paco, that couldn't have been stated any better than that!! The fact that we are playing them at all, since I believe PSU shouldn't even be playing football at all, makes me sick to my stomach. Barnes is incompetent in so many ways, but this just reinforces that notion if he wants to keep playing those perverts. What's right is right. Period. And Pitt is only adding to being on the wrong side of this issue by being willing to play these a$$holes. Pitt doesn't have the guts to tell them to take their cult somewhere else because they want the money. Typical of Barnes and his minions.

Here's the problem, which is exemplified by the co-signed letter that has been unilaterally posted to the front page of both Pitt's university and athletic website (but not reciprocally posted), which in its own right, exposes quite a bit about what is about to happen.

Barron's own words, in a letter to his university back in May, stated his incredulousness at victims' allegations, and bemoaned the "innuendo and rush to judgement" and how "appalled" he was at how things are reported. Then he oversees the decision to actually honor Paterno which has been universally condemned, because after all, basic and universal human and moral precepts speak clearly to what is going on there. This is also an institution in the wake of the worst sexual abuse scandal in sports history, that goes out and pays record money for a coach that is at best a misogynist, and at worst culpable in rapes of students at Vanderbilt, and then hires, to what should be the most important position at the institution, a President with existing institutional ties whose own record with handling an athletic rape scandal at his prior school is easily available for all to examine.

So we know full well what Penn State expects when it asks for fans to be "respectful:" a complete subversion of truth and basic human morality. To sit silent, as they had been silent for decades. To bury the past, and anything that presents the slightest inconvenience to their institutional narrative. Any resistance to the deification of their self-sainted patriarchs is met with horrific backlash from their fans which is not in the least bit restrained by the institution. All of this is in full view of the millions that have suffered abuse and those currently contemplating the repercussions of actually confronting their attackers and attacker's enablers in order to prevent the next targets from suffering the same fate.

There is no bravery from Pitt in intentionally side-stepping the issues that everyone is talking about, both inside and outside the "rivalry." Requests for civility without compromising moral integrity could have achieved without sloshing into Penn State's cesspit. Co-signing this letter effectively legitimizes Penn State's demonstrated concept of "respectfulness," and it brings Pitt down to their level. That is why it continues to be disappointing that we are seeking to engage them in further partnerships, athletic or otherwise. Maybe it is naïvety on the part of the new administration, but frankly, it is making me question my ongoing support for the University of Pittsburgh.

Well stated, Paco. I, too, have my reservations about further support of my university if this is what they think is the right thing to do. It is wrong on so many levels and I don't think anyone at Pitt is naive at all about what they are doing. They just aren't very smart and lack moral integrity. Stooping to PSU's level on anything is unacceptable.

I know my pittance of a contribution to Pitt, relatively speaking, won't matter if I suspend it as a result of their poor decisions. So withholding money from my end means nothing to them. But they will know my feelings on this matter in some way and know I'm not happy at all with the lack of integrity of our AD and Chancellor. They seem to be acting in a cowardly manner and I can't respect that.

They can wear Ped State jerseys, run out through the tunnel, the jersey number corresponding to the year Sandusky raped them!

If Pitt has any brains, and if our fans have half a brain, they should make the day ABOUT FOOTBALL ONLY and not make it an ugly day to be ashamed of.

Good for Barnes for wanting to make this a regular series again, it would be great to play this game every year.

They have to know that there are going to be major issues Saturday and this is an attempt to head some of that off, but the actions of our university warrant careful examination. Everything is starting to get a feeling of ick right now. I can't wait until this game is over. At this point, I'd be all for cancelling the series if Penn State publicly expresses any issues with Saturday over displays of protest against their abhorrent institutional culture.

Extending it at this point is almost unfathomable to me. Money drives the bus, but that is not a bus I'm sure I want to remain on.

I feel like there will be major issues Saturday too, and from reading many of your posts, sadly, it seems that Pitt fans will be the instigators of the problems. Then some of you act like causing trouble is justified, while saying you don't want to sink to their level, that doesn't sound like taking the high road to me.

But they all have to be wearing orange or yellow blazers. Egad, that was embarrassing.

Those people had to be so confused.

Bowl rep, "Why are we coming again?"
Pitt representative, "We want to present you with a plaque."
Bowl rep, "Why?
Pitt representative, "To celebrate that we played in your bowl."
Bowl rep, "You haven't played in our bowl since 1938."
Pitt representative, "And...?"

I've repeatedly called for Pitt fans not to instigate anything, but also not undermine their own integrity of truth or morality on any issue. No Pitt fan should feel compelled to consider the delicate sensitivities of those that have show none of the same for Penn State's rape victims. No one should back down from basic principals because it is inconvenient to some warped belief system wrapped around the idolization of a coach. But that doesn't mean you go out in get in someone's face either. But if someone gets in your face because of a t-shirt that has nothing but truth on it, no one should feel compelled to back down. And I've said repeatedly that it is better to wear Pitt gear and just cheer for Pitt.

But what do you care, as you've said, you're only in things for yourself.

Exactly, it's not on me or you to change Penn State's culture. Sandusky's in jail, JoePa is DEAD, why do some of you feel like WE have to fight them to change THEIR culture? Get over it.

Culture like that needs to be changed anywhere that it is. It needs to be pointed out so that it isn't repeated or spread. It is what enables abuse and muffles justice. You personify your motto.
