Plan to Hide Duggar?

Bell would have been the one to decide who starts in that game. And I’d be willing to bet a lot of money that the reason he went with Lynch was because he felt Lynch was better equipped than Dugger, a raw and developing passer to be generous, to run Bell’s standard pass-heavy playbook. Turns out Lynch is a walk on for a reason, and Dugger, while raw, has some juice to his game and energized his teammates in a way that Lynch couldn’t have. They ran a different package for Dugger and it worked a lot better than Lynch running the usual playbook.

It had nothing to do with Nardizzle’s typecast for the QB position.
Thats not what I said. I said its because of the depth chart, and the difference in practice time. I said that because it has been mentioned about what coaches see in practice. Dugger was like 4th on the depth chart, before injuries and departures. Coming into the last game, it was all about Lynch, and Dugger had some special package. Lynch got most of the practice time.

Because Dugger has not really had any time in practice this year to show what he could do, the damn coaches had no clue what he could do. What I mentioned about Nard's prefference in a QB is he likes pro-style QBs, that is why a walk-on got more practice time than Dugger. A walkon QB is higher on the depth chart, than scholarship QB.

Heather Lyke was NOT operating in a vacuum. Whether it was coach contract extensions or spending 1/2 billion $ on a volleyball/'rasslin facility. All of these had to go thru the chancellor and trustees. Which makes Pelusi's suit against the trustees all the more ludicrous. He most certainly voted aye on a Narduzzi extension.
? Pelusi’s lawsuit has nothing to do with Narduzzi’s extension.

Well, see, coaches, even mediocre ones like we have, spend a ton of time evaluating their players and always start the guys that they think give them the best chance at winning, not their “favorites”. There are many variables to this including how well a player knows the playbook and runs the offense and executes the plays in practice. It’s not an exact science and they’re not always right. And sometimes, a guy who doesn’t look all that great in practice comes alive in games, and his teammates respond to him differently.

This recurrent theme that P4 football coaches whose livelihoods depend on winning play “favorites” over better players is about as uninformed and ignorant of the workings of a major college football team as it gets.
Coaches usually have a way that they WANT to play and prefer to play and they pick guys who’s playstyle they like and feel more comfortable playing with. Most coaches DO NOT know how to develop kids in into players because it takes the ability to teach. Most coaches don’t have it. This is evident if you coached at any level including High school and JUCO and Major college football. The coaches who can teach are the elite coaches and Pat doesn’t hire OC’s that do that.

This place is bonkers. No, Pitt’s Coach wasn’t hiding a stud QB to fend off offers from other teams. Dugger looked athletic enough to warrant a question about why he didn’t start the bowl game, but I doubt he gave them a better chance than Nate, who played a damn good game against Clemson.

He also came out of higher school about as prepared to play P4 football as most of the posters on this board. He was never supposed to see the field this year, this was a learning year for him. QB is a complicated position and Dugger was/is extremely raw as a true freshman. It’s good that he got some run in a game situation and showed that he can do some things, but this idea that we had RGIII sitting deep on the bench all season because the coaches are just morons is just absurd.

The moron part might still be accurate, though.

Yeah, but the OC is not making the decision who is 1st, 2nd, 3rd team QB. Its Nard. For one, Dugger is not the kind of QB Nard likes. He wants pro-style QBs.

Nard is too much old school thinking. That is the reason Pitt is not getting a lot of the decent offensive players, other than maybe RB. Pitt can be better, but they need to get a HC who is young, and can relate to players, and be willing to get out and promote Pitt, suckup to the donors, and the Pittsburgh community. Nard could care less about the donors or dealing with the community or high school coaches.

Pitt needs to find a way to get him out. With NIL and buying players, you have to have a HC willing to except it, and embrace it. Nard is not willing to go all in, and Pitt will continue to suffer the consquences. And the argument that getting him out will cause all the players to leave, and set Pitt back, does not hold water. Pitt has already been set back. Going 3 and 9 last year, and losing 6 straight to end the season, is a huge set back for Pitt.
How exactly do you embrace NIL and buying players? And what do you mean Narduzzi isn't willing to go "all in"? That's not really a decision a coach gets to make. No coach gets to dictate the culture of their employer. Donors & boosters are perfectly capable of deciding how to spend their money.

The head coach begging boosters and the community for more money to buy players isn't going to do accomplish anything significant.

Agree with this. They didn't ask Dugger to do too much and only threw the ball 13 times. Pretty sure Bell likes to throw the ball a lot more.

I will say that it looks like they've done some decent work developing Dugg. His throwing motion, ball rotation and footwork looked much improved from high school. He was always a nice athlete with size, but at times struggled to throw a spiral. Anyone who saw him play in high school knew he had a long way to go to develop as a passer.

You kidding? Narduzzi barely makes any decisions on offense. He said as much last season. He finally intervened with Jurkovec, but that was all Cignetti according to the Great and Powerful Duzz. He even let Powell decide which running backs would play, which led to the inexplicable playing of C'Bo over Hammond. Narduzzi is a defensive coordinator who makes about $5.7M too much.

I don't know if he's against dual threat QBs, because we've struck out on recruiting about 100 of them over the years. But I'm sure pre-2010 Big Ten football is his sweet spot/comfort zone. And that doesn't just go for style of play, unfortunately, which is why we're pretty much just watching the fuse burn down until we can dump him.
To be fair, Big 10 offenses pre-2010 was a sweet spot/comfort zone for a lot of D coordinators. Running a defense is much harder now, and I think Duzz/Bates do just fine on that side of the ball (most of the time).

Game management on the other hand is a huge problem, and that falls squarely on the head coach. Offense, defense, and special teams never seem to be in sync.

I am going to withhold judgement on the offense in general until next season, but the early returns are not good.

Yes, Dugger looked very different than the quarterback I watched last year in high school. It's promising for sure.

Dude, part of a college head coaches job, is to sell the school to high school players and coaches. Times have changed, thats why coaches are leaving the college games. Its no big secret Nard doesnt like to smooze donors. He had to be push to promote the 412 NIL this year. The man simply refuses to communicate with people. His stubborness is costing Pitt dearly, and his contract is an arbatross.

You like him may not like it, but this is where its at. The fans complain there are no big donors, well there are some, but Nard has alienated them from the program.

There are names given to the coaches Pitt needs, snake oil salesman, sleaszy, cheaters, egomanic, etc. But those coaches no how to appease the people needed to front the program. Look no further that Calipiri. People in an uproar, cause he having dinner with Pitt people. Well that is the type of stuff that is needed. Nard is not willing to do it.

Times HAVE changed. Most recruiting is mostly transactional.

Smoozing, schmoozing, or kissing the ass of donors is a really quite stupid. Look no further than Calipari. His huge budget that didn't produce results to match got him ran from town. (They weren't going to pay his huge buyout, but they made his life a living hell to where he took the first out he had.) Is Arkansas tired of paying top dollar for mediocrity yet?
Coaches don't schmooze donors at schools that want to win. Donors trip over themselves to buy talent. Sherrone Moore didn't have to kiss anybody's ass to land Bryce Underwood.

Fact: If a coach is at a school where he has to beg donors to buy into NIL, he's coaching at a school that can't win any significant. Duzz, or any coach, would have to be a complete moron to beg for a few million more dollars just so Pitt can hopefully win 9 games and go to a perceived better meaningless bowl game.

But he gets the players and the donors. I never said he did anything with the talent. But no matter what school he has been at, the donors dole out the money. He has been doing it since he was with Pitt. And again, his smoozing has got him the money and players.

In practice they call Dugger "LaMar" . Julian is very athletic and it's ridiculous why he wasn't used at the end of the season. I can see why teams haved shown interest. H2P!!

Basketball & Football are really apples and oranges though. It's a lot bigger ask to fund a football program than it is a basketball program. It would literally be begging boosters for millions of dollars for another 1 to 3 wins. Totally not worth it. Besides, Pitt has made it fairly clear on numerous occasions the last 30+ years that operating a program in that manner isn't really welcome here.

The current version of college football is stupid and unsustainable. It's unrestricted free agency with unlimited salary caps, and players have all the leverage. Pure garbage.
