Is shaping up to be a pretty big game now on Saturday in terms of one of these teams now possibly getting into that next tier of teams in the conversation to still have a shot at the NCCA tournament. Syracuse has won 4 in a row now and is 5-3 in the ACC and has around the same NET ranking as Pitt right around 68-70. So needless to say this is a huge huge game. Pitt winning this game on the road and getting to 5-4 in the ACC and 14-6 overall heading into Duke next week will definitely keep them in the conversation still for an NCCA Tournament spot still heading into February.

Bad matchup for us. More than likely we are looking at back to back losses.

It definitely is with the zone but this is still not a very good Syracuse team. Pitt has to shoot well to win this game and can’t have any cold stretches. But this is definitely still a very winnable game for Pitt. This Syracuse team is not world beaters by any means.

13-6, 4-4 in the conference going into this game at this point of the season...yeah, let’s do this! H2P

Syracuse is no world-beaters that's for sure but they got some Kryptonite for Pitt that's the zone. We are the worst team in the ACC against the zone and if I was a coach my team would play 95% zone on Pitt until they can prove they can beat it.

Pitt will need to force things in transition to win this game.

Plus...they really only have 1 day to work on playing a against the zone seeing they played last night and this team needs to practice against the zone. Capel said they wouldn’t be able to do much today due to the late game and heavy minutes for some of the players.

First meaningful ACC game in forever. Can't wait. But, yeah, Orange are a bad matchup. Not expecting a W. Need big games from Toney, Champ and Murph. Probably need 35+ from them to win.

This. Hope guys like Champ, Toney and Murph help change this narrative.

Yeah Cuse has Lost 3 of 4 at home.

UVA (48-34) then beat UVA on the Road (63-55)
ND (88-87) beat ND on the Road (84-82)
VT (67-63) then beat VT on the road (71-69)
Won over BC (76-50)

Typical annoying Syracuse team this year.

We have more experience than last year. Murph is a wash for JWF. Plus we add Hamilton and JC to the mix. If Murph and JC can hit early, maybe we can break the zone. And since we just had the awful start to game game, maybe this is a game where they come out firing like UNC with something to prove.

I don't think Murph is as good as a JWF. Maybe his shooting at time. Nothing else though. Some of it I'd say isn't even close.

Will definitely need our outside shooting to be *on* come Saturday.
Where's Nasir Robinson when you need him? Zone breaker.

Looks like Pitt’s NET dropped from 69 to 74 from yesterday to today on the NCCA net website despite the win last night. But on CBS it still has Pitt’s NET at 69 even after the win against BC. Pitt’s RPI is at 66 for whatever that is still worth. Both I’m guessing will jump up a bunch of numbers if Pitt can win in Syracuse on Saturday.

I sure miss Dixon every time this game rolls around...

Should be a good game! Champagnie and Murphy will need to shoot well since we will not be able to drive much on the zone. Keep a hand in BB's face at all times.

Syracuse is a very much improved team compared to what they were earlier in the season. As mentioned above this is a very bad--I would even say terrible--matchup for us. We are not a good outside shooting team and Murphy doesn't have enough height to get clean looks from 3-ball land. Also, Brown and Hamilton aren't skilled enough to threaten the zone from the inside.

Our best chance is if we can create turnovers and beat their defense down court to attack before they get set up in their zone. IMHO, we will be highly ineffective when forced to attack them with a half-court offense.

Sagarin rating hanging at about #70--almost no change from yesterday.

That is a great point we really don't have enough time to practice against it. IMHO we should never play zone again if we can help it because almost every team we face finds there stroke against it and plain and simple we're not good with it.

Yep. If I were Capel, I'd be digging up some video on how the JD Pitt teams attacked and beat that zone.

I'm with you on that! He just talked to the Lavance fields on his show heck he could have told him. I don't think there's any shame in going back and seeing how a different coach approached it.

I watched a full video of one of those games last year.
An absolute thing of beauty.
Was like a fine work of art.

Problem is

it’s because Dixon has a structured motion offense -
And capel has demonstrated no such structure and ball movement .
Bull shit. That didn’t work against a zone. It was a whole different approach than the motion offense. There was movement by a few people but not the entire team like against man

They are much better than when they lost 48-34 to UVA. For such low scoring by both teams, it makes me wonder if they forgot to use the shot clock. This will be a tough game but I'm giving Pitt a chance against any opponent this year except possibly Duke at Duke.

Unfortunately.........Pitt attacking a zone is pretty much like solving the following:

didn't smoke what? kinda lost me there...
I believe if you backtrack he got his posts and quacks mixed up.

The last PITT QB I saw you criticize was back in 1929 when Jock Sutherland was coach and they ran the Single Wing. That guy????

That's what I've been thinking all along. Dixon knew how to attack that zone and beat SU most of the time. We need to copy that formula.
