Pitt - UVA

BTW, for those who didn't see it, our injuries must really be piling up. Still no Franks or Hess. Jordan Anderson also did not play, whether that was injury related or simply poor play related, who knows. So PItt started two guys (Popa and Giamarusti) who had a combined one hit in 13 at bats coming into tonight. And then in Pitt's big six run sixth inning Ron Washington got hurt. He led off the inning with a walk. Hulett hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman that he booted. Washington could/should have been able to easily get to third, but he was just jogging into second so he had to stop there. Then Jack Anderson hit a ball to right that dropped in and Washington originally held up to see if the ball would be caught. But when it hit and took a really high bounce away from the right fielder he probably should have been able to score. But once again he barely jogged into third.

The Virginia coach came out to the mound to talk to the pitcher, and while he did the Pitt trainer came out and talked to Washington, and they ended up bringing in Josh Overbeek to pinch run for him. So Pitt played the last three innings of the game with three guys on the field who coming into tonight had a total of one hit in 20 at bats.

Mike Bell has done a hell of a job with this program. Beating the #8 team in the country with 4 starters missing from the lineup (when Washington left) including the entire starting OF is just incredible. Taverez has filled in nicely for Franks but they need to get Hess, Washington and Funk back healthy.

Yes he has! They have a very good coaching staff and the entire bench was into the game. A lot of positive energy. I like Tavarez. The ball jumps off his bat.

That ball he hit out tonight was absolutely smoked. As soon as he hit it you knew that it was gone.

In contrast, when Levins hit his home run I originally thought it was just going to be a routine fly ball. But the wind was blowing out hard to right field (especially early in the game) and the outfielders just kept drifting back and ball just kept going and going.

Early in the game Washington was jogging to first base. I would guess he pulled a hamstring coming out of the box and wasn’t the same the rest of the game. I’m sure he wanted to tough it out, but I hope he didn’t do more damage to it.

They scratched him against Kent State so I think he played hurt the entire game.

Tavarez should start the rest of the way, but they need Hess and Funk back soon man.

Agree on needing the OF’s back. I just don’t see how they are going to win many games against their remaining schedule without them. When Gilbertson pitches they have a shot against anyone. Evans and Corcoran have been solid but need run support. Hopefully after this weekend series all are healthy.

I agree. The young guys filling in did play well defensively tonight, but we need the other guys to get healthy for sure.

I've heard Funk has a somewhat significant knee injury. I wouldn't expect him back all that soon. Probably looking at a May return with him.

Caught the end of the broadcast on ACCNX yesterday when I got home from the game. Jeff Hathorn said none of the injuries are season ending and Funk’s is better then first thought. Hopefully we can get fully healthy soon!

Sky Duff just hurt his left shoulder.
That was one of the craziest plays that ended in a very unfortunate injury. We have the bases loaded, and hit into a 5-2-3 DP. The UVa 1B tosses the ball towards the mound and then realizes there are 2 outs and then throws out Duff at home who was hustling on the play trying to score. We just can’t catch a break with all these injuries.

Really nice start for Corcoran today, and an impressive series win against Virginia. Hopefully, Sky Duff's injury isn't too serious but it didn't look good. Washington had a huge pinch hit RBI single but he looks a ways off from playing other than a pinch hit with that hamstring. As mentioned above, Hess pinch ran and played defensively in the 8th and 9th, so maybe he's getting there. Pitt has been incredibly resilient with so many guys out but the ACC grind continues so hopefully they can get healthy soon.
