Pitt - UVA

Wehler, Anderson, Washington, Hulett, Stuart, Lester, Gilbertson.

So, some really significant losses.
I think just as an initial thought that they’ll still be okay in the field - you can move Anderson to first from the DH spot, you’ll still return Hess and Funk in the outfield so you’ll only have one spot to fill there, and you can do some shuffling in the infield - maybe move Duff back to second where he played earlier in his career and put a guy like Ripepi at third. And even to fill that third outfield spot, you’ve got three freshman who are getting a bunch of experience this year with the injuries, a highly touted kid in Martinez signed, and who knows what you’ll look at in the portal.

The big question will be the rotation. I think the league has figured out Evans at this point, so I think you’re probably looking to fill two weekend rotation spots so you can push Evans back into a long relief/midweek starter type of role with Dragani. I think they can hit the portal hard and sell ACC weekend starter roles to a whole lot of guys in the portal. It’s also very possible that at least one of those weekend spots gets taken by a guy like Kennedy, who seems to be the next guy up once he takes some time to work on his command. He’s got good stuff. Same with Bautista.

That’s definitely one who could break into the rotation. I could easily see a rotation next year with Corcoran on Friday, a transfer on Saturday, and this kid or one of the current roster kids on Sunday.

Should we worry about Levins getting drafted?

Do any of those guys have an extra year due to Covid?
All of those guys are out of eligibility. Guys like Duff, Franks, Levins, Hess, Dragani, Anderson, Corcoran, McKennitt, Miller, and Verrastro are actually Seniors in terms of their academic status but still have their COVID year left.

I remember during the BC broadcast a week or so back the announcer said that Levins was talked about around MLB circles as being like a 10th-round pick. No idea how true that is but probably.

Yep that's sort of what put it in my head too.

With the second half of the season that he is having, I can’t imagine Corcoran not getting drafted.
His FB was topping out at 88 against UVA. That isn’t going to get you drafted high in the draft. Kudos to him and the staff for developing into a good pitcher.

Yeah, 88 post-TJ as an upperclassman is no bueno for the draft, especially in a 20 round draft. I think he’s got a good shot to carve out a pro career, but he strikes me as a guy who is either undrafted or gets thrown a below-slot contract in the 2023 draft.

The only thing about that is that a lot of 10th round draft picks are college seniors who have no leverage that a team can draft and offer something like a $5,000 signing bonus to, and that guy either takes it or is stuck with basically no chance to play in the minor leagues. And then the team can use the extra bonus pool money that that guy doesn't get to help sign their top draft picks.

The last couple of drafts have been a little goofy because of covid (and maybe this year's will be as well) but in 2019 of the 30 10th round draft picks 17 of them were seniors who signed for $10K or less, and two more signed for around $20K. In 2018 it was 19 of the 30. And there are also players who get picked in earlier rounds who have the same thing happen to them. So there aren't a lot of players who are "10th round talents" that actually get picked in the 10th round.
