Pitt vs PSU 1976 - YouTube

tmt101596 has uploaded a bunch of never seen Pitt videos from the glory days. This boy is awesome. Now I hope some of you will now realize that '82 team was not as bad as the news media (Smizucks) portrayed.

https://www.youtube.com/user/tm101956/videos

Some of the games I looked over 10 years for spending and offering lots of $$$$ with no success then just out of the blue they pop up on you tube. I was able to purchase the 76 Pitt/Penn State TCS condensed game from the university library up there many years ago but this was the first time I have seen the complete ABC brodcast. This is a true gem!!!!!!

I just watched that game and Washington’s quarterback was absolutely brutal. He basically handed us the game.

Washington controlled the entire second half of the game, but made a few huge mistakes – which is what allowed us to win.

Dave Wannstedt looks pretty buff there on the sidelines. Wasn't Jimmy Johnson on that staff as well?

I love these old school football videos. Watching Dorsett run wild on the Nits with his bulky shoulder pads ripping through his pinnie-like jersey is a great aesthetic.

I am only going off memory, but from that era of late 70's, early 80's Pitt played Washington, Florida, Tennessee, without reciprocal return home games.
Yes, you are correct, in fact, we played twice at Tennessee without return games. I was at one of those games, it sure was fun inching your way down those giant ramps with nearly 100,000 fans in total silence after their Vols lost!

Jimmy Johnson came to Pitt for the 1977 season as DC under Sherill. Sherrill spent the 1976 season as HC at Washington State.

Jimmy was at Pitt for 2 seasons: 1977 & 1978. After the '78 season Jimmy took the OK State HC job. Caused quite a rift during Pitt's bowl prep for the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, because Jimmy was in the process of poaching some of the Pitt coaches to accompany him to Stillwater. One of the guys that went with Johnson was Dave Wannstedt.

Pitt lost that bowl game to NC State. They had a RB named Ted Brown who had a big game that night. But the distraction created by the coaching rift certainly also played a part.

And when Jackie left, the first, and only phone call for a replacement should have went to Jimmy Johnson.

Who's doing the color on radio? That was 9yrs before I became a Pitt fan so I have no clue.

Johanny Sauer as the best

Sauer was a tremendous radio color man. So knowledgeable and analytical. He played at Army and also coached there under Earl "Red" Blaik for a few years. (He also coached at several other colleges and also in the NFL for a while).

He passed in 1996. Really miss him on the radio broadcasts. Brings back such great memories.

Did Johnson want the Pitt job after Sherrill?

Well, just my opinion of course, but I believe Pitt could have gotten him if they had offered him the job to come from OK St. May have definitely changed Pitt football history for the better had they done so.

But of course by then Ed Bozik had become AD and the self-emasculation of the FB program had gotten underway when they decided to just let Jackie go. So Pitt elected not to do a real HC search and instead just handed the job to the guy who took over as DC when Jimmy Johnson left - Foge Fazio. Foge was a real nice guy. A real "Pitt Man", too. But he had zero experience as a HC. Unfortunately, Foge failed as a HC at Pitt. He never got another chance to be a HC again, either.

Hindsight is always 20/20. But that move turned out to be what really greased the skids for the precipitous decline of Pitt football. Especially so after the "Killer B's" made things impossible for Foge's successor, Mike Gottfried, and ran him off. And after that, things REALLY got ugly.

Its great to watch these games from just before I started being a Pitt fan!

Its interesting in the Washington game that both Pitt and Wassu have Old Gold as their official color but they actually care enough to have the uniforms as the right color. We had that bright yellow color. It wasn't until Majors II that we got it right and not since.

The coaching rift was a definite distraction. Jackie Sherrill and Jimmy Johnson had to be separated at halftime because they got into a physical altercation arising from Jimmy Johnson whistling the OK State fight song in the locker room. Jackie more or less fired Johnson on the spot and called the defensive plays himself during the second half.

The final game at Pitt Stadium is out there on YouTube too (37-27 over ND in ‘99). I can’t believe how crazy the crowd was for that one. Which is cool, but also sad to see it takes the final game at a nearly 100 year old stadium for the crowd to be crazy.

I was at that 1988 tOSU game! Can you imagine Pitt beating tOSU 42-10, LOL!

I was at that game too! It's a shame that years team didn't show up for the last two games of the season against NC State and Syracuse, they could have gone to a bowl game when it meant something. That stretch of years when they didn't play Penn State the last game of the season always felt weird.

I didn't realize they played the two teams that played for the national title that year two weeks apart. Which makes that loss in between to 3-8 Boston College a little strange. Were they overlooking them for Notre Dame?
