Pitt vs Stanford This Friday @Fitz

Should be a good one. Wrestlestat has Pitt winning 24-14, but could see a few matches going the other way. It has Finn beating Abas. Not sure if Finn will be back in time for the match, but it should be a good one there. Interested to see how Luca matches up against Norman. It also shows Stanford without a 125? Is that accurate?

They have two 125 pound wrestlers on the roster but they forfeited both 125 pound matches in their three-way meet, which was their only competition other than Midlands.

Not sure what you mean but they have had a lot more competitions than that. Stanford beat iowa state earlier this year , who was ranked 6th at the time, without a 125lber. They are 4-1 in duals, only losing to univ of Iowa, and they just won midlands as a team. Nico Provo is their 125 and he is very good but has not competed yet this season, not sure what is up with that.

Wrestlestat does not have Miranda going at 141. That could be a pivotal match. Also could see Cardenas at 157 if they feel it’s needed. I’d think we go with Brown if Finn isn’t ready. Mackay getting call at 165? They show him on the match post on their social media.

I doubt Cardenas goes he appears to be redshirting and since he is a junior he doesn't have any free competitions.

Preview:
125: Babin vs FFT?
Stanford has yet to trot out a 125 this season. I would expect we win this weight by forfeit. If Provo is back and goes it would be a toss up match with Babin as it would be his first of the year. PITT FAVORED (FFT)

133: Vin v. Knox
Knox is 14-2 on the year with some real solid wins. If Vin is back it is a Stanford lean but I would hope that Vinnie can keep it close. If Vinnie is still out and a 125 is getting sent up to save points it could be bonus points. STANFORD FAVORED

141: Ant v. Miranda
Jason Miranda went 6-2 at Midlands including majoring both wrestlers Ant lost to at Midlands. If he goes, and I don't see why he wouldn't this is definitely a match we would have to get an upset in. STANFORD FAVORED

149: Solomon v. Abas
Abas is a 6th year and a former AA who is wrestling pretty great this year. He just won a Midlands bracket with both Brown and Solomon in it including an 8-3 victory over Brown. Regardless of who goes for Pitt in this one I will say we are the underdog. STANFORD FAVORED

157: Evans v. Cholakyan
Evans beat Cholakyan in SV 11-8 in a match where he had to make a sizeable comeback and generate stalling points. This match will be very interesting as both guys are good and have contrasting styles. Evans gas tank is a huge asset of his and if he can limit Grigor's scoring outbursts early I think he can make this a winnable match. TOSS UP

First Half:
1 Pitt Favored (FFT), 1 Toss Up, 3 Stanford Favored

165: Keslar/MacKay v. Garvin
Garvin is inconsistent but is a returning AA who can score points in bunches. He has good upper body attacks and is a really good athlete. Either guy we send out here will have to weather the storm early, look for counter offense and hope Garvin gasses. STANFORD FAVORED

174: Luca v. Norman
Norman just won the Midlands bracket that Luca MFF out of. He is 14-1 on he year with his only loss being by 1 point to Dean Hamiti. I am curious to see this matchup as this is a bonafide top 5 win for Luca if he can pull this off. He has always been close but never quite broken through against these top 5 opponents. This match could go either way as they have similar results against common opponents. TOSS UP

184: Heller v. Montiero/Wojickiewicz
Montiero is the starter but he MFF out of Midlands, Abe was also at Midlands where he went 2-2. Montiero is the tougher of the two but regardless of who he sees I expect Reece to continue his positive momentum from Midlands and get another W. PITT FAVORED

197: Stout v. Stemmet
Stout had a great Midlands where he won a tough bracket. Stemmet was in the bracket where he performed well but lost twice. Stout shoul be favored in this one has he has seemed to have made that jump to the point where he is consistently beating these mid level NQ guys and cementing himself as a potential AA candidate. PITT FAVORED

285: Pitzer v. Ming/Mankowski
Stanford has two rostered heavyweights. Mankowski is 2-11 on his career and Ming is 34-42. Either guy is someone I expect Pitzer to beat. If Dayton is not the guy, and we send out one of the backups then I think it could be questionable, especially if Ming goes for Stanford. PITT FAVORED

Back Half: 3 Pitt Favored, 1 Toss Up, 1 Stanford Favored

Overall: 4 Pitt Favored, 2 Toss Up, 4 Stanford Favored
This is a dual where we can very clearly see that both teams have weights where they expect to win. A single upset or a specific result in one of the tossups could be enough to swing the entire dual. If Stanford does FFT 125 that 6 point lead to start the match could be enough to swing the entire matches momentum.

125: Nico Provo (STAN) vs. #17 Nick Babin (PITT)
133: #10 Tyler Knox (STAN) vs. Tyler Chappell OR Matt Marlow (PITT)
141: Jason Miranda OR Jack Consiglio (STAN) vs. #31 Anthony Santaniello OR Briar Priest (PITT)
149: EJ Parco (STAN) vs. #26 Finn Solomon OR Kade Brown (PITT)
157: #28 Grigor Cholakyan (STAN) vs. #22 Dylan Evans (PITT)
165: #14 Hunter Garvin OR Zach Hanson (STAN) vs. Jared Keslar (PITT)
174: #4 Lorenzo Norman OR Collin Guffey (STAN) vs. #18 Luca Augustine (PITT)
184: Abraham Wojcikiewicz OR Cole Han-Lindemyer (STAN) vs. #18 Reece Heller (PITT)
197: #24 Nick Stemmet OR Brook Byers (STAN) vs. #12 Mac Stout (PITT)
285: Peter Ming (STAN) vs. #14 Dayton Pitzer (PITT)

Based on these probables which were posted by the Stanford team:
125: Tossup
133: Stanford Heavy Favorite
141: Toss Up (Both teams have an OR)
149: Pitt Favored
157: Toss Up
165: Stanford Favored (Tossup if Hanson)
174: Toss Up (Pitt Favor if Guffey)
184: Pitt Favored
197: Pitt Favored
285: Pitt Favores
This is a dual that could be very close but could also be a solid Pitt victory depending on the Toss Ups. The potential for bonus at 133 and 165 is high for Stanford so the Panthers have a lot of ground to make up.

Why not use Tebo there? Frustrating that apparently Marlow got held out of Midlands only to use his 5th/last date on an obvious mismatch like this.

Trouble making weight. Did not make today. He was here since Wednesday trying.

What is up with Pitzer? I know he’s coming off that injury, but he looks so slow compared to what he was coming out of high school. like is the weight that he put on hurting him cause he didn’t look this slow his freshman year .

Thoughts:

- I get why they did what they did with Marlow here, but I think he would have been better served wrestling at Midlands. Tebo could have taken the FF and Babin wrestle 133. Trading 2-4 or more matches for max 3 dual points seems silly

-Priest had that match but wrestled to not lose in the second half of the match. Surefire way to make sure you do, in fact, lose

That was the best match Ive seen Finn wrestle at Pitt. Parco was no slouch. He was competitive, but Finn won EVERY 50/50 position and turned some into back points. I still believe that Kade Brown has forced Finn to elevate his game. Finn says "Game on". Hell yes

-Evans backing up win 1 against Grigor with number 2 is a statement. Dylan is legit. Prob not an AA threat this year, but in the future. I have to think that HCKG sees A LOT of himself in Evans

- Keslar was definitely stuck. He seems to have a talent for that

- Luca was right there. Norman was gassed. I think Luca jumping on Norman's head and forcing him to carry his weight took its toll on Norman by the third period. The scramble that led to the stalemate with a minute left was crucial. That killed a ton of time. Luca still had a shot at the end. His gas tank was impressive. Hopefully this leads to more confidence

- Have to think that Pitzer is struggling with wrestling with the added weight. Either that or he is hurt. He just doesnt look right. Slower, less coordinated. Less in control. Concerning
