Pitt won 67-51. Pitt played like crap the first 2/3 of the game. They had butterfingers and mishandled the ball several times. But they scored the last 10 points of the game to win by 16.

Pitt’s aggressive pace just wore down Coppin. Pitt played 12 players; Coppin State played six.

Brown had a big game for Pitt with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Liatu King had 15 rebounds.

Pitt now 8-2.

Go Pitt.

Coppin only had eight players dressed. They had one player walking around with a boot on and another on crutches. So it is possible when they are healthy they would be better, and they would certainly be deeper. And they have won four games this season, all against D1 competition. But....

That team was certainly one of the worst, if not the worst, team I have ever seen play at the Pete. They played six, and I doubt two of them would start for a good high school team. The fact that Pitt did not absolutely hammer them is not a good sign. Not a good sign at all.

For some context, they played Virginia Tech last month. And lost 85-32. They also have a 29 point loss to Rhode Island and a 31 point loss to East Carolina on their resume. But they do also have four wins.

Only good thing is that last year’s Pitt team loses this game by 10.

On Friday night Pitt plays NC State who is ranked No. 2 and picked to win the ACC —again…. Would be a good sign if Pitt can at least hang with them - but I’m thinking that Pitt’s struggles at the offensive end just won’t allow it.

To stay in it, Pitt would need it to be one of those nights that happens once or twice a season where the shots are just falling…

Go Pitt.

Pitt looked really good at times late in the second half after looking really bad at times in the first half. They have to start better Friday to avoid a blowout.

Fun game. Coppin kept hanging around because Pitt just couldn't get going. And coach sat Jayla basically the whole 2nd quarter after she picked up 2 fouls, and then didn't pick up another I believe when I looked towards the end of the 4th. But Coppin just stopped hitting shots in the 4th and Pitt started making layups.

I just really enjoy watching this team, even if it looks ugly at times.

-Coach White gave the team a pretty stern lecture after the 1st quarter - it didn’t work, well at least until late in the 3rd…

-Day started to show some of her old good moves.

-With Pitt having a small lead late in the game, I was surprised to see Hayford on the floor - she hustles but she still has maddening turnovers…

-For a few moments late in the game, Pitt showed what they could look like — playing fast and with good passing. At least twice, Everett drove for pull up jumpers but instead passed it underneath for easy layups…

-Mary Dunn made two big threes when Pitt was really struggling with their half-court offense…

-AB made a couple more tough shots off the glass. Her aggressive driving, which led to buckets or to foul shots, is what allowed Pitt to pull away…

Go Pitt

I think Lance White's opening post game quote summed it up pretty well. "Obviously not our best performance of the year."

But hey, a win. It's good to have gotten to the point where they could play a poor game like that and still end up winning by 16.

As I'm sure you already know,
I agree about her "maddening
turnovers." Coach is intent on
making a pg out of her, and
she has improved. She is
fast, fairly quick, and IMO a
good athlete. Her floor sense
when she's moving fast with
the ball is poor. She has a
repeated habit of driving
hard into the lane and
stopping dead in her tracks.
She then looks up, and
wonders...now what? Coach
has to teach her the options
are; 1. lay up, 2. pass it off to
a teammate, 3,.pull up for a J,
4. don't give up your dribble
and come out with the ball and
set up....basic stuff for a pg.
Harris knows ho do this.

Hopefully Harris is soon ready
and takes over the pg spot.
Emy can back up at either
guard spot.

But Coppin just stopped hitting shots in the 4th

Coppin State's shooting percentages by quarter:

18.8%, including a smoking 0.0% on two pointers (Bluto Blutarski, pleased).
20.0%
36.8%
14.3%

For the game, 23.1% on twos, 24.0% on threes.

That is, ah, well, bad. Really, really bad.

She had four times last night where she drove into the lane and forced up ridiculously bad shots because she had no where to go with the ball. On one of them she ended up throwing up a little scoop shot literally around the back of the defender. Somehow the ball went in.

That was the first time it happened in the game, so maybe that helped embolden her to try the other three. The worst part is that many, probably even most, of the times that she does stuff like that if she would just take one or two fewer dribbles she'd have a wide open 8-10 footer.

Yup, that is exactly how
I see her. and I was
saying it all last year.
My problem is with the
coaching. I listed above
what they have to teach
her to do. She hustles, and
sometimes is ok setting
up her team mates. It's
the lack of vision, know
how, and Bball experience
on her outta control drives.
When she does it, take her
out and have an assistant
go over it with her. This can
be fixed if they address it.

Unfortunately, Coach Kiesel hasn’t been available because of her pregnancy situation. Hayford will be a good project for Coach Kiesel…

Go Pitt.

Yes, she undoubtedly
would be a good fit for
helping Hayford.
However, what I listed
above should be able
to easily be taught by
any of Pitt's Bball coaches.
