Pitt Women

So, if that's the case my unofficial count tells me we now have
13 scholarships on board. Is that correct? Any idea if Verdi is
trying to bring in more?
I think it’s 14. There are seven returning ladies, and then two incoming freshmen and five transfers. So they can bring in one more, but unclear whether they’re actively recruiting for it.

Can not believe they would bring in another guard or wing.

If they fall into some height, I see a take.

Im just getting into having people in the know but I was told by someone I really trust that the Mens team is all but done, could see a late hs add or Hueitt like transfer to fill out the roster. And the Women are done, now obviously if someone falls into their lap im sure they would take them but the expectation now is that they are done

So, we have 7 players back from last year’s team and 7 new faces on the roster. I guess this is the new model.

Returners are Marley Washenitz, Bella Perkins, Aislin Malcolm, Aaryn Battle, Raeven Boswell, Lauren Rust and Ioanna Chatzileonti. Looks like 5 guards and 2 forwards coming back.

I agree, and yes another big would be good.
Also there are 9 guard/wings. It's no wonder Verdi says he expects
an aggressive, pressing defense. He has the numbers, with experienced
guards to do that. Also, none of them are high scoring types. IMO the
returning guards will play as will the transfer guards. On paper the depth
is there to do this. I wish the talent level were higher, but seriously what
would one expect. These transfers are from better programs and have
good game experience. The reality is they did not transfer up, but of
course transfered down. If they were stars of their previous teams
they wouldn't come to a Pitt program that was an ACC bottom feeder.
Actually I wouldn't be surprised to see two guard transfers become
starters.

I realize that some of the above sounds negative but I feel it's realistic.
Even so, I am optimistic that we're better than we were last season,
have some experienced depth, and can maybe start to make moves
upward to the middle of the ACC. King is a big loss, but the three
transfer forwards seem to collectively be an upgrade on the inside.
Let's see how Coach Verdi can put these pieces together.

You have to give him time, this program was rock bottom when he took over. He has added a very good recruiter to the staff, still could use one more with great AAU experience. He has done a GREAT job improving the talent on the roster considering what he has to offer. He seems to have a plan and it will take a few years, but I think it is going in a positive direction.

Interesting. Coach White would have played all 15 players. 😊. Coach Verdi is going to have some interesting coaching to do.

Some players aren’t going to play much. My guess — if you can’t score at a decent %, you won’t be playing…

Wonder if a player or two will be hitting the portal now.

Go Pitt.

I don't know if anyone hits the portal......but you're right about Verdi
"having some interesting coaching to do." Could he play all these
players? Yes, crazy as it sounds. BUT would he? A typical rotation
at this level usually is eight or nine players. How do you keep that
many subs happy? On the flip side, I thought these Pitt women
stayed relatively happy and spirited last year despite the losses, and
the bench time some of them had. That attitude is a good thing. These
transfers should help. The question is how much better are they than
Pitt's returning players? Personally I see a lot of similarity and a lot
of experience. I do think the three transfer forwards are going to
see a lot of floor time. All those guard wings?......Let's see how this
plays out.

I think Malcolm is the only one (with the Kans trf) that plays

I think Marley can be a useful piece. She plays with a lot of energy, and there’s value in that.
Definitely "plays with a lot of energy." Now, if she could lower the
number of Turn Overs and somehow start hitting some outside
shots, she would surely play. She's an athlete. Question is, can she
become a basketball player with a floor game who can actually shoot?
She plays good D, gets steals and is excellent at drawing offensive
fouls. She hopefully can become a positive force on offense.

Hope so.

Still need quality bigs to turn things around.
True, we certainly " need quality bigs to turn things around." My limited
womens bball recruiting knowledge tells me there aren't that many
"quality" ones out there, and the elite programs are going to get the
quality ones available. Meanwhile, Verdi has to get the best players
he can. My sense is Macie Arzner appears to be a legit player who
should be able to do well in the ACC. As for "turning things around,"
more recruits like this one should improve our talent level and
hopefully get us out of the cellar and start moving towards the
middle of the conference.

Macie does sound like a higher level recruit than we’ve gotten in a long time. The shocker to me is that she’s coming to Pitt from Oregon…

Go Pitt.

Coach White was very likeable but this was his first head coaching gig. Coach Verdi has turned around two programs and knows what it takes. UMass was a real player in their league. He wanted to bring their best player with him but Louisville stepped in with an NIL offer. I have faith that he'll get us where we need to go.

Speaking of Lance White, I was curious about what he’s up to so I looked it up…

“Lance White has joined the Hofstra women's basketball coaching staff as the associate head women's basketball coach as of May 2024.”

Best wishes to Lance and Melanie.

Go Pitt.

Already a season-ending injury on the women’s BB team.

Kiara Williams, a 6-foot freshman forward, will be sidelined for the entire 2024-25 season after she needed lower leg surgery. She’s from Florida.

Go Pitt.

Hadn’t realized that two coaches from last season have left the women’s team. Coach Verdi not wasting any time.

Ty Margenthaler was listed as the “Defensive Coordinator.” He’s moved on to North Alabama. LaKale Malone was listed as the “Offensive Coordinator.” She’s gone but doesn’t show up anywhere else yet.

Coach John Marcum, who is credited with some decent recruiting at Syracuse, was hired and is apparently the top assistant. He is the DC. So I guess that makes Coach Verdi the OC?
Candice Finley is still listed as the Recruiting Coordinator.

BTW, only 13 players currently listed on the roster. Maybe the European player coming later??

Go Pitt.

Kiara Williams is out for the season with a leg injury, so that'll leave 12 avaible players

I do not think it is a good sign that Verdi felt compelled to fire two assistant coaches he hired just last year.

What does it say about his contacts and judgement?

Interesting contrast between Coach Verdi and Coach White, who seemed loyal to a fault.

If Coach Verdi wasn’t pleased with those coaches, I’m glad to see he didn’t just stand pat. None of these assistants, old or new, seem to have backgrounds that will knock anyone’s socks off…
