To the victors go the spoils, the saying goes.

The opposite is true, too, and Pitt saw it on Wednesday when the ACC released its preseason football media poll, a press-collected ranking that had the Panthers at No. 13.

But the offseason after a season like the one Pitt had in 2023 is bound to include such indignities. That’s how it goes when a team sinks to the depths the Panthers reached last season, winning just three games for the program’s worst record in 25 years.

The ACC media poll was the latest reflection on Pitt’s awful season a year ago, but the players and coaches didn’t need any reminders. They’ve been stewing about last year, with its missed opportunities, its embarrassments and its self-inflicted disasters, for the better part of the last nine months.

“Last season was not fun at all,” senior tight end Gavin Bartholomew said at Pitt’s Media Day on Wednesday. “No one enjoyed that. This year, our team motto is ‘Prove it,’ so we’ve got some stuff to prove this year and we’re excited.”
