Last night in anger the Blue Jackets Calvert walloped a PENS guy in the last two mins drew a penalty and skated off the ice to the locker room????
I realize they'll be looking at the hit for suspension implications.
Wouldn't it make sense for intentional penalties in the last two minutes of a playoff game to carry over to the next playoff game? Maybe the full two minutes should carry over??
Lets say Calvert wanted to take out a PENs player in the last two minutes of a losing effort. The Blue Jackets would suffer no penalty and the PENs would be down a player!
Just my thoughts!

That's really not a bad idea. That player should get a 2 game suspension but the team wasn't really penalized. Down 3 goals with 40 seconds left the penalty meant nothing.

Especially given that the coach is the one who orders the mayhem at the end. That guy's actions were almost robotic in his obedience to the orders. Stepped out, nailed one guy from behind, moved over and nailed the next guy, and once his stick (weapon) was broken, skated off down the ramp.

Suspend and fine the coach too, as well as impose a double minor or 5 min PP on the team to start the next game (or quadruple the fines and suspensions if it is the final game of the series) ... you'd see much of that BS end.

But the thing is, I don't know that most WANT to see the BS end ... there is still a significant contingent of fanbase that figure, if my team isn't going to win, at least let's see them mix it up...

So the PENs could lose a guy say Crosby, Malkin, Kessell, whomever and the opponent loses nothing since they were getting their butts kicked anyway!
Now if that Calvert hit/penalty resulted in a carryover two minute penalty for the Sunday game they would think twice about doing something like that! I think/maybe! It is Hockey!

I like the idea, but then what do they do if it happens in an elimination game?

I don't want the "sending a message" to a team for the next game to end. I do want to see players who intend to injure removed from the game. There is a difference.

Really, Pens just cruised to 2 easy wins by 7-2, are they now intimidated by this "message"? LOL, hockey thinking can be really stupid.

Yes, sending a message works. Crosby and Malkin are two extremely emotional players that are easy to get off their game. Throw just one off and the whole series shifts. Have you paid attention to what Dubinsky has been able to do to Crosby in the past?

OK, lol, just like they "need" fighting to police the game, so nobody gets hurt, lol, thanks Coach Cherry...

If a player does that in an elimination game it would be because they are going home anyway. The offended team moves on and forgets about it. But the player and his coach should open the next season on suspension.

I totally agree . I would add Tortarelli should have to stand at his own goal and take a puck to the nuts !

Now I'm not a hockey expert, but hasn't Dubinsky lost every playoff series in which he participated against Crosby?

I'm not even so sure you need to consider how agressive the hit was or wasn't. Bottom line is he just flat out went after kuhnackl, no way to sugar coat it it was clearly out of frustration. No need at all for garbage like that in any sport, and quite frankly the game is not safe with Calvert on the ice.

Actually, somehow, Sullivan broke them of their terrible habit of getting baited into retaliating in last year's playoff. For the most part, they have done that again this year and in the firstv2 games of the playoffs.

That rule change that you suggested is one that's long overdue.

If they want to eliminate the thuggery in the NHL, the solution is simple. Eliminate the 4th line of forwards and reduce gameday rosters to 15 skaters. If a player has to skate for close to 20 minutes a game, they will have to be skilled and able to play. No more hiding a player who is a thug on the fourth line and he gets less than six minutes a game on the ice. The NHLPA would never go for it though since it would eliminate 3 jobs per team.

"Thugs" are pretty much passe. Very few "enforcers". It is isn't always these "thug" guys, Brad Marchand is one of the best players and scorers in the league, but I think he has also been in the principal's office at least 5 times in his career. Dubinsky can play the game.

The issue the NHL has, it still doesn't take hits to the head seriously. Meanwhile they think they are being vigilant by maniacally paying attention to if a guy's skates was a cm off the ice or on the ice on an offsides play that gained him no advantage.

Very true. But it allows more fringe players with less skill.

Also, look at who is running the league. Outside of Bettman, it is all former "old school" mentality players. Colin Campbell, Stepane Quintal, Chris Pronger, etc. It is the only professional league that doesn't embrace its stars. Heck they added George Parros to the Department of Players Safety.

That offsides play is awful. Needs to be a plane like the end zone is.

Amen. On both things. Yeah, I love the "Player Safety" committee full of guys who were anything but safe (Brendan Shanahan and Kris King can be added to this group). Was Dave the Hammer Schultz and Ogie Oglethorpe not available?

Or.....totally agree and have said the same thing, the blue line should be the plane. I mean if a puck crosses the goal line, it doesn't have to be along the ice, right? The offsides skate touching or not touching is stupid. Was he over the line or not? End of story.

And this is a league who when the GMs met a couple of years ago, instead of discussing how to control interference and obstruction, the one rule they decided was most important was to focus more on those who "embellish" when they are interfered with.

Good point. Teams don't employ the classic Semenko and Domi type thug much anymore. What Calvert did the other night was a common occurrence back in the day but you don't see it to that blatant degree much anymore. The problem is the reaction from the league. Only one game pretty much tells the players to maim at will.
