So a bit over a week back, when the Ben vs Kenny debate was raging like wildfire on this board I decided to ask someone who has seen both practice many times his opinion. I did not post it then but at this point my level of apathy for this program has grown to the point where I don't care. OK the person was known as a brilliant OC and QB's coach. He might have coached at Pitt and he attends practices regularly and does attend the games. He remains a friend I'll have coffee or a drink with a couple of times a year. I am not confirming who this is because I never want his relationship to any Pitt staff compromised.
He told me that his impression was Kenny is a QB with all of the physical tools to become great. He likened him to a kid named Palko in that he has very good arm strength, can make all of the throws, and has the legs and athletic ability to run out of trouble and be a duel threat. The one thing he stressed is that without coaching him day to day you don't know what the kids psychology is and how coachable he is as a Freshman. When I asked about Ben and why he is playing he said the most likely reason is that Pitt simply feels Ben is less likely to make major mistakes right now because it's easier for very young QB's to lose games with bad decisions then win them with brilliant play. However, and to me this is key, he stated that Ben has made some very questionable decisions but has been very lucky that he has not been intercepted far more. This man is a coach who is not going to bash any staff let alone his adopted team, however it's completely clear to me that he would be coaching up Kenny and playing him right now. Take it for what it's worth...
