I was at the game so I don't know if this was discussed but what is the rule for players numbers? Jeff is listed as 3 in the depth chart, but puts on a 96 or 98 for the fake punt play. I would assume Pitt would have had to let notre dame know ahead of time that the 3rd string QB was wearing a number in the 90s but how does that work?

Don't quote me on this, but according to my friend who is an official for Division 3, all George Jr had to do was tell the referee if he was not wearing his official number. From there, he thinks the ref reports this to the opponent. Which is probably why they didn't take defense off the field. My guess....

They wouldn't have taken the defense off the field in that spot no matter what.

Because their coaches aren't that dumb.

It's not unusual for several players to wear the same number in college. You see it all the time. ND had two kids on the field with the same number against Pitt at the same time the last time the game was in South Bend. That is illegal but strangely the officials missed it. So as long as both aren't on the field at the same time, it's fine.

At least Narduzzi didn't try to toss the ball to a lineman like Dantonio did against PSU.

It didn’t work.

The main problem with a fake punt is you can’t use it in an obvious situation, which that was. ND was prepared for it. I don’t mind going for it but line up your offense and don’t try to be cute.

That lineman was actually open, though - it took a very good play from PSU to break up the pass. Pitt had no one open on the fake punt.

Whoever it is our special teams coach is an idiot. Duzz should take over. So many miscues. Using a guy who never took a snap in his life as the back up holder. Effing up the coin toss vs Penn St. Not bringing in a decent punter and being saddled with mr. 35 yds a a cloud of dust. . The fake punt was stupid everyone knew it was coming. What's next the swinging gate?

I'd normally be agreeing with everyone on the call being asinine, but given how horrid the passing game, I actually can't dispute trying something else. Just hope this desperation in the face of that futility is a sign he plans to part ways with the architect of that futility. And that the check signers concur.

That's just it. There was no desperation. They literally planned to do this when they boarded the plane.

Whether planned here on the south side on the white board, or drawn in the dirt on the sideline at south bend, deciding to call this crazy play (especially at a time and situation when ND would be on guard for it), including the wacky number change for JG3, in place of running a passing play with our regular offense, shows both the futility of our passing game and that the coaches realized it.

they put thought into the number change. Kind of hard to tell 96 from 98

If they have to tell the opponent that they changed numbers, why change it? Who are you fooling? If you have to tell them that you're trying to fool them

Do they actually have to tell them before the play? That just seems odd. Is it maybe that they tell them before the game, we have our third string qb #3 that we may play on special teams and if he does he’s gonna wear a #96 jersey? If that’s the case then obviously the thought process was after seeing #98 punting all day the opposition may not even realize #96 is back there.

Or I could be wrong.... it could’ve just been an even worse play than originally thought to be.

-If a player changes his number during the game, the player has to announce it to the referee when the player enters the game with the new number .... the referee then informs the opposing teams head coach of the number change and is supposed to announce the change.

- I'm not sure, but I think that if you change your number during the week leading up to a game, you don't have to announce it to the referee during the game but you have to put the new number on the official roster for the game.

JG Jr. was wearing his 96 jersey and warming up with Pickett when the teams came back out for halftime, and he was strictly throwing, not catching the ball at all...pretty much the way a quarterback warms up. He also had a decent enough motion to logically assume that 96 had some idea of how to throw. If i noticed this up in the nosebleeds, it is safe to assume someone on Notre dame’s sideline noticed that a 96 that was built like a QB and threw like a QB but wasn’t wearing a QB number.
