Random Thought on Pugh

Since we have a lot of good talent and depth at defensive end, would anybody be opposed to Pugh backing up Aston and then taking over the position after next year? It would be a good way to get another athlete on the field and not be standing on the sidelines. Thoughts?

I have no inside info on him but my gut says we will see more of him this season. He was a redshirt Freshmen last year so it is not like he is was a senior.

This is probably a big year for him though. He probably needs to make an impact or he could get lost in the shuffle type thing.

He could turn into the next Shayne Hale. Should have been left at LB, but his body type told the coaches that he would be best at DE, so they move him to a position where he is not very good at and we screw a 4* player. Instead of always asking kids to ADD weight and muscle, why not ask kids to drop some weight? Look at the player Bell has become after dropping 20lbs after looking pedestrian at msu being a bigger back.

I hope i’m wrong, but I feel moving him to DE was a mistake.

Eh... not sure I would go there. Shane Hale was simply a bust. I don't care what position he played. He was too slow for LB and really had no choice to move.

For Pugh, it is too early to tell. I also question the move to DE considering our need at LB but not ready to say the coaches were wrong. Maybe he was too slow to reach to the play, maybe he wasn't making the right reads, etc.. Who knows what is really going on.

I highly doubt they are making the move with any negative intentions to screw a 4* player.

I saw Kaezon play in HS in two sports, and I was thrilled that he signed with Pitt. I thought he had the talent to play by his sophomore year. I don't know how he has progressed, but he is only a RFr, so his best days should be ahead of him. If PN, a former DC, and now HC, and Charlie Partridge a former HC and his position coach, didn't think he should be on the field, then we should respect that. But, I hope Kaezon sticks with Pitt, and becomes a star as some former Quips have. Obviously, something has to change with him to get in the 2-deep, but he is capable, I'm sure. Best of luck to him on whatever plays out, but I hope he doesn't give up and transfer, then sit out another year. I don't think 3 yrs. off from live competition would be a plus for anybody.

pedestrian at msu? huh? he has almost 2000yds as a jr

Pugh didn't play a LB position in high school anything like he would have to play at Pitt. He basically played as a stand up DE. So unless he was going to play RB, he was changing positions.

With his body type and skill set he wasn't going to play LB in Narduzzi's defense, unless you move him inside, which is even more of a change than putting him at DE.

This is why I don't care if they ever recruit another highly recruited WPIAL player. The assumption is they should be playing, but maybe they aren't good enough yet.

If Pugh was from NY, nobody would care if he wasn't playing.

You don't want Pitt to get highly rated recruits from Pittsburgh because some fans on a message board might question why they aren't playing?

It seems something soured with Duzz relationship with Pugh and Aliquippa. It is probably why Raines didn't have us in his top2 and we haven't offered Devonshire yet. Could be as simple as Pugh getting pushed down the depth chart when he doesnt think he should and Henry having success at WVU.

Wow.. you never watched Pugh or Hale in HS did you?

How did Pitt screw these kids by playing them in the same positions they played in HS?

You do know that Terry Smith was the one who had Shayne in a 3 point stance long before Wanny ever got a hold of him. Why? Same reason DW moved him. He wasn't very fast combined with poor instincts, usually is a bad recipe for a lb.

Pinpoint me a game in or two, when Pugh looked like a 4 star lb. You won't find any because he played DE.

You are correct. DE or FB would be his best positions IMO.

No reason why he is not our starting CB. Too good of an athlete to be on the bench. Who cares if he knows how to play the position, get the best athletes out there. Duzz doesn't know what he is doing.

I am sure he will be fine. It takes some longer to get adjusted, his best days are ahead of him.

It's not only message board posters, and you seem to have touched on that in the second part of your post.

Being a highly recruited kid from Aliquippa doesn't entitle you to anything. Even if fans, coaches, other players and parents think otherwise.

Bell looked pedestrian at MSU while rushing for 1800 yards his last/junior year?

That's like saying James Conner looked pedestrian during his sophomore year.

Think he meant that Bell looked fat and slow. He was both but could get away with it in the B1G. He would be a slug at 250 in the NFL.

Bell ran a 4.6 forty at the combine, with a 6.75 second 3-cone drill. Not exactly the results of a guy who is fat and slow. Most of us would agree that Dion Lewis is pretty damn quick; Bell was only .03 slower in the forty.

He dropped a lot of weight prior to the combine to show up at 230. By his own admission he played at MSU 245-250.

There is a lot of totally uninformed speculation going on. A few have written him off already. Why? Because, while just starting to learn the techniques needed at a new position, he didn't break through the two deep, which had a 5th year DE, and two 4th year DE's on the two deep roster.

He may or may not ever amount to anything on the field, but its silly to read much of anything into his inactivity this year.

You guys have no clue. Admit it--you never watched a single MSU game and knew nothing of Bell until the Stillers drafted him in the second round.

Here's LB looking all fat and slow at MSU-be sure to watch the slo-mo replays:

When the move to DE was first announced, I posted that I was not crazy about him move. I hope it works out for him, But I think he would be awesome at LB and I think he'd likely having a better chance of being drafted at that spot (should he prove talented enough at some point).

While I agree that losing the weight worked out even better for Bell in the NFL, I have to disagree with your "after looking Pedestrian at MSU" comment. He was a very good in college. Quite nibble for a big back too (reminded me of a faster, and more athletic Bettis). I remember watching him play at MSU and thinking he was the one college player I really wanted the Steelers to get in that draft.

We're gonna need him on defense. Now if they wanna use him as a goal line FB or something, I think that'd be a good idea. Whether lead blocking or actually carrying the rock I think he'd be good for short yardage.

I was hoping he would turn out like Kevin Givens of Ped St. I only followed him because he’s from my high school. Givens was a power rb and lb and put on weight and moved to dt and then played some de late in the season and got a lot of pt. I really was hoping Pugh could be a similar player and be a difference maker on defense.
