Rashad Wheeler now oline

Interesting move.... didn't know we had the depth on Dline to do that .

If true, it's not as much of a depth issue on defense as it is desperation on offense. I mean, I guess the kid may have shown the ability to play over there but it doesn't speak well for the recruiting and development of OL-men. Starting to think that Peterson didn't do the program any favors.

He took a year off and then his son got him a job this year at Youngstown state. His lack of development is obvious at this point

He's a 10X better prospect on the OL than on the DL. I called this 3 years ago. To me he was a 2 star DL but a 4 star OL.
I remember watching him play when Central was on Root. I thought he looked much better on the Offense Line also. I can see this change benefitting both he and Pitt.

Agree with others that he could help out as an interior OL. And with the # change to 54 he could always help at DT if there are any last minute injuries. Sort of be that guy like a Mike Herndon was a few years back. We clearly need more help on OL than at DT.

Speaking of DT we have nice depth, prob another reason for the move. We have Camp & Watts who are proven. Twyman is prob next in line and has lots of talent. Danielson is another young guy who has ability. Alexander can play DT or DE. Then there are the 2 RS Frosh as well.

Probably a little bit of both. Watts and Camp will play significant reps. Then you have RS So in Twyman and Alexandre. RS Fr in Bentley, Danielson and Greene. The incoming freshman will redshirt.

This is my read as well.

Wheeler was getting meaningful reps at DT and looking good doing it. This will have an impact on the D line, but I think the OL situation is that desperate.

OL recruiting is a significant issue at this point.

Correct - we have 7 guys on the current roster that can play DT. It makes sense to make the move now.

If what you say pans out, it begs the question: “Why didn’t Pitt do this sooner?”

Because they needed a back up at nose. After Camp went down, they basically used only 4 interior players: Roy, Watts, Twyman and Wheeler. I guess they could have burned a redshirt or moved someone. But Wheeler was the best option even if it isn't his best position.

This year with Bentley, Danielson, Green eligible and maybe Alexander sliding inside, they have the depth to afford moving Wheeler to his best spot.

All good points. But Pitt could've used help on the O-line, too - especially after Morrissey went down - and they were desperate. (Pitt always seems to need help on the O-line.)

I guess my point is that I'm all for using a guy at his best position, and if (in hight school) he was really a stand-out O-lineman but just a so-so D-lineman, that would've made it an easier decision for me.

We are waiting for the transfer from Michigan to get here. Our center may not be going 100% yet. Could this just be a camp move?

Peterson wasn't very good, but I do think Pitt has some talented young OL guys. Drake and Houy could be good. They're both still young and inexperienced, but are going to be given the chance to win a starting job this year, even though they're just sophs.
I'll say it again, OL is the position where age and maturity matter most. Unreasonable to think that as RS freshman that they were going to beat out fifth year seniors. But I think they have more ability than several the guys who they'll be replacing from last year when they were RS sophs.
Good move for Wheeler, hopefully.

At this point, I'd assume they're moving Wheeler to see if he can start. He will be a guard which is probably bad news for Brandon Ford (thinking that Hargrove is still ahead of him). Morrisey still is your center. Houy got first reps as a backup last year so he'd have to be on the inside track to play one of the tackles if the Michigan transfer gets the other. That would leave Drake and Ford as your first backups, assuming nobody behind them breaks out.
