From a Detroit Free Press article--and encouraging since Narduzzi carries the same philosophy to Pitt. As I keep saying, the more like Dantonio he is, the better IMO. Unfortunately, we will be competing with Dantonio and MSU for a lot of the same kids:

Under coach Mark Dantonio, summer camp sessions have become key to MSU's
high-level talent evaluation. The Spartans are viewed as one of the
best teams in the nation when it comes to identifying players with
impact potential.

Re: Has to be better than the Wisconsin way

I actually think Chryst was a good talent evaluator too. He just aimed lower than Narduzzi does and will.

I think both Chryst and Narduzzi both have a solid track record of finding talent.

For Pitt, the problem has been that certain schools appear to make a practice of waiting to see whom Pitt offers, then they know to offer the same kid(s). Nothing like letting a more talented staff do your work for you......

Re: Has to be better than the Wisconsin way

I don't think our overall recruiting approach is going to change that much under Narduzzi than it was under Chryst. It will be a little more transparent and dynamic and it will focus more heavily on defense than had been the case. However, it will still likely be in the 30-50 range, rather than a Top 25 type of class. It will also be an approach which stresses development and redshirting young players. That is a VERY wise approach, IMHO and one I wholeheartedly endorse.

To reach our aspirations, Pitt must be a developmental program. We are never - and I mean NEVER - going to consistently just out-recruit everyone and just go from there. That is a very naive POV that too many of our fans seem to have.

We need to win local battles for highly rated kids and we need to do a great job of evaluating system fits at camps on on film. Then we need to work like hell to develop those kids so that by the time they are RS sophomores and juniors, they are ready to compete with better pure athletes at places like Miami, Louisville, Clemson, Florida State, etc.

Re: Has to be better than the Wisconsin way

Narduzzi just needs to duplicate what Dantonio did at MSU as closely as possible. They have comsisrently beaten teams with better on-paper talent in the Dantonio era. Now MSU is starting to reap the benefits of all that winning on the recruiting trail. Dantonio's first top 25 class las year, an even better one this year. They have expanded their recruiting reach into the west and south. As Dantonio said when asked about the last 2 classes, "we're at a point where we're selling results now. We were selling hope. Now we're selling results.."

Hopefully Narduzzi works the exact same model here at Pitt. If it works, go with it. Some coaches are too egotistical to do that when they get their first HC jobs, and they want to build a better mousetrap. That's usually a mistake. Duzzi has already stated that he plans to emulate what they did at MSU so I don't think that will be an issue.

Outside of Fla St, Pitt can have a program that is as good or better than programs in the ACC. Michigan St has to play Michigan which is not the case for Pitt. Different P5 ACC and is hands down the best program in the north east. PSU and ND offer things Pitt can't match but for the ACC Pitt is the best program for NY, NJ, PA talent.

good enough to win 6 games per year.

vega just like wanny (who actually was a good recruiter, and a much better recruiter than chryst ) it wasn't his recruiting that was bad or a an issue. It was his game day play skills. You telling me that youngstown state and iowa had better players than Pitt ?
Ferrari or Ford, i can beat you in a race if you are scared to drive and don't know what do when your in a curve.
