Pitt didn't have a huge crowd of recruits for the win over Louisville, but there were some notables in attendance. Here's who was there and what they thought of the 45-34 victory:
Official visitors
Chawntez Moss - "Nice win. Second half was a little shaky, but nice win"
- Moss is a Pitt commit and took his official visit this weekend in advance of his plans to enroll in January.
Patrick Jones - "Really enjoyed it"
- Jones is also planning to enroll early. He took an official visit to Virginia Tech last month and will take his final official to N.C. State next weekend before choosing from Pitt, VT and N.C. State. Jones added that his visit is "going really good overall" and we will speak with him later today for a review of the visit.
Zack Gilbert - "It was a great game"
- Like Moss and Jones, Gilbert is enrolling early, so he has a decision coming soon as well. He will pick between Pitt and Virginia Tech in the near future, and we like Pitt's chances.
In addition to the three official visitors, there were a bunch of Pitt commits at the game.
Pitt commits
Brandon Ford - "It was great. Really enjoyed seeing the development of the team and spending time with the other recruits"
- Ford said he tried to spend time with as many recruits as possible at the game.
Rashad Wheeler - "Had a lot of fun and got to meet some new recruits"
- Wheeler specifically mentioned Jones and Gilbert - fellow defensive linemen - as recruits he spent time with and said "They are real cool and I think they did enjoy Pitt. Hopefully they make the move."
Bryce Hargrove - "It was a good game both sides of the ball but Pitt's front 7 look great."
Paris Ford - "They played great!"
Kaezon Pugh
Therran Coleman
And Pitt hosted a number of targets at the game as well, including:
Pitt targets
Aaron Mathews
Elijah Deveaux
Caleb Deveaux
Jo-El Shaw
Jonathan Brys
Jake Chapla
- For all the discussion about Mathews' recruitment, he has now attended multiple Pitt games this season, so the interest is definitely still there.
- Shaw was a bit of a surprise to see at the game. I don't think Pitt has changed anything in how it is recruiting him - as a linebacker rather than a running back - and he is committed to Western Michigan, but there still seems to be some contact between those two parties, so that's worth monitoring.
- The Deveaux brothers are the sons of former Pitt RB Glenn Deveaux, and both Elijah and Caleb look like big-time prospects. Elijah is committed to Duke but Pitt has caught his attention, while the Panthers were the first team to offer Caleb, who is a sophomore in high school. All three Deveaux's - Glenn, Elijah and Caleb - enjoyed themselves at Pitt this weekend, and we plan to get more reactions from them once they're home this evening.
- Brys and Chapla are the two names that are somewhat "new" on that list. Brys is a 6'6" 260-pound athlete who could be a tight end, an offensive lineman or a defensive end. It sounds like the Pitt staff initially likes him as a tight end who could grow into an offensive tackle; as a tight end, he's more of a blocker than a pass-catcher, but he can catch the ball, too.
Brys doesn't have an offer from Pitt, but the coaches seem to be pretty interested and they plan to visit him during the contact period next month. You can check out his senior highlights if you go to this page and scroll down; here's one game with a lot of TE highlights. He is wearing No. 99.
- Chapla is a kicker from Plum. The last Pitt staff wanted to take a kicker in this class and was showing interest in Chapla, and it sounds like the current staff is looking at following the same path. Initially, the coaches have approached Chapla about being a walk-on, but that interest could change as Signing Day approaches and the coaches get a better sense of their scholarship situation. Here are Chapla's senior highlights.
