Good find, MVK.
Smoke has more than a "connection." He ran The Family before getting into college coaching. Davis had to have played for Smoke earlier in his career.
The Barnes situation is eerily similar to Wanny's.

Well Barnes always reminded me of the Mack Brown of college coaches. Just a lot of talent, but never really accomplishes anything.
Well, except for that National Championship Mack Brown won at Texas. And the NC runner up. And a Fiesta Bowl win. And 9 straight 10 win seasons. I'd take a whole lot of that nothing even if they should have won more with their talent.
In all fairness, his last 4 years there were so poor compared to the standards he had established at Texas that it was time for him to go. However, he did a lot more than Rick Barnes who made I believe only 1 final four.

He reminds me a lot of Gottfried and, to an extent, Lavin (although I think Lavin is way worse).
His results taken as a whole aren't bad, but when you look at the talent he has on his rosters you wonder how the hell that's all he did with it.
For a school like Texas, which is pretty prominent and the flagship University in a talent laden state, yeah maybe you go in another direction. You'll be able to get talent regardless of who is at the helm, so getting a good X and O guy is a smart idea.
The thought is that you'll still be able to get great talent, so getting somebody who coaches them up would increase results.

very few have done less with more than Barnes since he has been at UTEX. Hell he couldn't get past the second round of the Dance with Kevin Durant and one of the best freshmen classes ever to wear a uniform that didn't say Kentucky on it. I mean. Durant alone on any otherwise middle of the road team should've been good to the elite 8 at least. He was a phenomenal talemt.
Ironically, I expect he'll get a lower level job at a solid place amd do well. I think he will do a lot better at a school with lower expectations-like the one he was at pre-Texas. .

Let's be serious, if you're Clemson why WOULDN'T you bring him back? He wasn't great there(sub-.500 ACC record) but he was better than anybody else they had come through recently.
Don't hold your breath on that one. Offered by every top program in the country except for UK. MSU or Michigan the likely beneficiaries, or UK with a late offer.
Also, one of Gottfried's guys has a big time mid-Michigan connection. NCSU was heavily involved right to the end with Davis and Oregon commit Trevor Daniel from Magic Johnson's alma mater, Lansing (MI) Everett.

I can tell you this: my Longhorn friend who now lives back in Austin has been praying for the day when Barnes gets fired. And he is not a fickle fan. And he says virtually the entire fan base wants him gone.
A few years ago, he had Bobby Knight come in to educate him on how to coach. He admitted he didn't have a clue as to what he was doing and wanted to start over. That was one hell of an admission by an experienced coach. Commendable that he had the guts to admit it, but pretty pathetic that a guy could be a HC for decades before realizing he was faking it all that time.

Is NCSUs connection better than the guy who ran his AAU program? This is the exact scenario why you bring in a guy like Smoke.
I agree its an uphill battle against MSU & Michigan but Pitt should have a shot at this kid if Smoke is worthy of his position. AAU connection plus immediate playing time at an ACC school.... he left B1G country once, perhaps he does again.
Not sure UK is going to be too involved with Ulis & the Harrison's all likely to return, not to mention Briscoe in the mix.

Well let's put it this way. Pitt was never on this kid's long list of suitors, and we had no involvement with him throughout an entire recruitng cycle.
I sincerely doubt he will now suddenly grt a wild hair that Pitt is where he wants to play his college basketball.
Maybe it's an indictment of Smoke that this kid never even had us on his radar screen for a full recruitibg season.
