Rodney Gallagher - football

I guarantee he can’t commit to that offer yet. I don’t doubt that the kid’s a good football player, but he’s going to hit a ceiling when it comes to commitable football offers if he can’t go to schools’ camps if he doesn’t end up being a top ~250 recruit.

I wouldn’t think he could commit to any basketball offer right now either really. I think Capel was backed into a corner to offer him (not that he isn’t really really good) but that fake Illinois offer hanging out there nah have forced his hand.

Have any players of note actually played both in last 5 years?

I know Jalen Suggs was also a highly regarded quarterback - but Gonzaga doesn’t have a football team (I think?) so he must have given that up.

It seems like the baseball-football dual sport athlete has become a lot more common than the basketball-football athlete. I guess that’s not too surprising, given the scheduling issues.

Derrick Griffin was pretty big time in both but couldn’t stay eligible anywhere (couldn’t get into Miami and got kicked out of Texas A&M).

Played basketball and football for a year at Texas Southern and absolutely killed it but then got kicked out of there, too.

Lol I know that. I’m just getting the board riled up on this one. But a western PA kid being a national recruit in football and b-ball... we’ve seen this one before. Will all depend on how tall he gets!

PedSt sunk a lot of money into that other basketball/football star before he bounced for a bigger payday.

He really should have gone to Oregon. How a player with his skillset came down to playing in Jim Tressel’s or Joe Paterno’s offenses is beyond me.

Location absolutely kills Oregon (not that they’re hurting by any stretch). Pretty part of the country, but not exactly a recruiting oasis. If that school were centrally located, they’d never lose a recruiting battle.

As for Gallagher, it all depends on the kid and his interests but big time football is always going to win out over basketball. Brighter lights, bigger money, and much easier to sell the pro dream in football. Long way to go in his recruitment, but if all the big boys come knocking in football, you’re fighting an uphill battle

I called this as well. I didn't know he played football but when someone said he did and his dad was all about it, that told me all I need to know. I said PSU, OSU, or ND for football. People are saying he isn't that level of a football recruit. Yea right. Any elite-level basketball player who is serious about football is an elite-level football player. Basketball takes more athleticism than any other sport. If you are a Top 50/100 basketball player, that means you possess the type of athleticism to play WR or DB at the major D1 level.

I'd imagine how tall he grows should be an important factor here. FWIW in unnecessary comments, Capel has already said he's ok with a player playing both sports just as long as they can handle the it.

I don’t know why you’d want to pick football over basketball.
The ability to get paid. More jobs. And just look at Pitt. We have been pretty damn mediocre in football for 30 some years, but look at all the guys we put in the pros. Whereas from 2002-12 in basketball, we were one of the 5 winningest programs and we had how many draft picks?

A great 6'0-6'2" college guard has to be Curry/Iverson like to play on the next level. a 6'0-6'2" great athletes at DB, WR or now even QB can name their price.

You couldn't just respond to the OP. You had to remind us that you
too "called it as well." SMF knows basketball.
Oh wait, he knows football as well.

I don't know football like I know basketball but its pretty obvious that a Western PA kid is going to pick football over basketball.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

You know, you'd be taken more seriously if every single post you made wasn't 1) self-congratulatory and/or 2) filled with absurd generalizations. This one is both.

Basketball doesn't require more athleticism than football by any means. The majority of top 50/100 kids absolutely could not play WR or DB at the major D1 level. People like Nate Robinson are the exception, not the rule.

No one knows which one this kid likes the best so to say he's going to pick this one or that one is really premature especially since he's only in the 10th grade period!

Yeah but how many guys have we had NOT make the NFL compared to how many guys who didn’t make the NBA but still made quite a bit of money in Europe?

I think basketball is hard to pass up at this point.

If he commits to the pedophiles he is dead to me. Plenty of time between now and then, and it is obvious he will be able to pick his sport. I don't think it is logical to conclude that he has his mind made up or that somehow an offer from the pedophiles automatically means he picks football. James franklin blows anyway!

You take any Top 50/100 basketball player, put them in a time machine back to 7th grade and make them a dedicated football player, they are ALL major D1 DBs or WRs. Sorry but it is what it is.

I’d argue that with international basketball you have the same chances of playing pro hoops without the crippling injuries and CTE.

ANY?? ALL?? Ok let's take a few Pitt players for example. Dejuan Blair,
and how about Sam Clancy. They were "top 50/100 basketball players."
So by your convoluted logic they'd be D1 DBs or WRs. Sorry, but it is
NOT what it always is. You did say Any and All. I'm sure other posters
could think of many more examples. I only mentioned the first two
that popped into my head.

The poster you responded to was right when he stated that your posts
are often "absurd generalizations."

OK, really?

Bball players 6'4 and under would be major D1 DBs/WRs

6'5-6'8 would be major D1 WRs/TE/LB/OL/DL

6'9 and up are too tall so wow, you got me but everyone knows what I meant. Of course a 7 footer isnt going to Bama to play Safety

Everyone knows what you meant?? "Everyone" ?? Believe me
many of us on here usually have no idea what you mean, or why
you say it. Thank God we don't or we'd be on a similar level of
you. You know, that higher level of....SMF knows basketball.

As far as "so wow, you got me.".....what else is new. That sure as
hell is no great achievement.

Just stop. The most likely position a basketball kid would be playing is TE and you didn't even mention it. You generally don't want DBs over 6'2 and WRs require a skill set that isn't nearly as common amongst basketball players as you seem to think.

The only reason that basketball athletes would be more likely to successfully transition to football rather than vice versa is because most football athletes are too short for high level basketball. It's not about athleticism, you can compare combine stats for both sports to see how hilariously wrong you are.
