Rumored transfer

Spann would be an interesting pick up. Great size & really good athlete, but he's been terribly unproductive throughout his college career.
Some of the comments in Twitter claim he was terribly misused.

Given the year FSU just had, it's probably cool to bash the coaching staff over any and everything. But the fact remains that FSU has sent several other receivers to the league while Spann has been in Tallahassee. There's a good chance that most reasons for Spann's lack of production fall squarely on his shoulders.

If he does end up at Pitt, hopefully the lights come on and he can start to fulfill some of his potential.

Cross your fingers and hope for the best. It's how Pitt's administration has handled football since 1982, so now the philosophy is matriculating to player acquisition in the NIL era.

Dae Dae isn't here anymore because of his prima donna attitude. Let's hope Deuce can produce with a fresh start! I'm not going to rack on him like the same culprits do for anyone we sign. Hope he is All American here and is successful. A successful Deuce means a successful Pitt football team. H2P!

Holy smokes, was that in slow motion? I don't think I've ever seen a kickoff returned for a touchdown before where the guy stayed south of 10 mph the entire time. That's actually impressive; I think he might have been dabbling in some Matrix-esque mind control tactics over the defense. Wonder if he improved on that at all while he sat out last year.

yeah, totally agree that highlight showed he found a crack, in front of him, and proceeded through it with some effort

wow?

I watch some HUDL videos and think, hmmn, I'd pass and one that stood out was Salhuddin(sp?) kid a few years ago exactly that way

it's either get an unproductive P4 player and hope that the change of scenery sparks something or go after FCS caliber players who want to try their hand in P4 football..

Or maybe wpial players that left home and want to come back. i mean, that's it, that is our options. that's all we have. anyone that has succeeded at the highest level, we arent an option.

Little bit of a difference when you're unproductive for a year or two - or buried behind Kyle Pitts - versus being unproductive for 4 seasons, though. I realize he was injured this past year, but being unproductive for three seasons + coming off an injury + it being five years since he's had significant playing time (in high school) doesn't exactly bolster my confidence.

It is what it is, and it's not like we're going to fill out the roster with studs. But if we're not going to add anything exciting in the portal then it's probably not a season worth investing much time or emotion into. Our receiving corps right now absolutely sucks. I'd imagine it has to be among the worst in the P4, if not FBS.

well it's either this or see who western carolina has to offer.

It’s a lottery ticket and Pitt has 80ish to try to hit the jackpot with. Take him and keep seeing who else you get.

Problem is when fans start justifying every transfer with that same logic. It can't always be:

Pitt Apologists December - May: I know he hasn't done anything, but I think he might!

Pitt Apologists at the end of the season: Well. what did you expect? We have no talent.

Shouldn't be impossible to go get a few guys who have done something at the P4 level. Maybe they've underwent a coaching change. Maybe they want to find a system that is an even better fit. Etc.

You are allowed to give 105 ‘ships next year. It’s not as though we are backed into a corner with numbers. Bring him in and keep looking for better players.

I mean, the comment pertained to Western Carolina. So what you're trying to do here doesn't really work.

But not to worry - I have plenty of other comments in this thread you can quote and argue against, as news breaks of this huge addition.
What am I trying to do? We're shopping in the portal with a handful of change.

It’s not logic, it’s reality tjough. In the time the portal has been open, Pitt has landed transfers from, checks notes, Toledo, Kent State, WCU. Until legit talent comes to Pitt regularly, you have to take the lottery power transfers.

Pitt has also landed transfers from Alabama, Clemson, K-State, PSU, tOhio State, Florida, LSU, etc.

He wasn’t exactly a highly regarded player coming out of a high school.

A lottery pick up is more of a 5* guy you hope turns the corner to his full potential.

Spann a 3* player with a .86 composite ranking. That’s more like hoping he can at least be a warm body type upside.

Terribly misused at 2 schools, by two different sets of coaches, for 5 years.

213 total career receiving yards.

In the 2023 season alone FSU had 6 guys with more than 200 receiving yards.

Interesting that FSU figured out a way not to terribly misuse Keon Coleman.

Not even sure where to start with the flaws in that logic.

This guy is an expired lottery ticket. He's headed into his 6th year of football at his 3rd program and hasn't done 💩

I'd much rather take a guy from the MAC who has produced and put up numbers.

This year? Who are they? That’s my point. We occasionally get a power program transfer and they have contributed. That’s why I say take a flyer on this guy. Remember Robert Foster doing nothing at Bama and then playing in the nfl.

Yeah, that's the thing: he transferred to an FSU team that was flailing at the time. It's not like this is Hykeem Williams - a premium high school talent who just hasn't lived up to his hype as of yet. This would be more like if Dontavius Butler Jenkins came to Pitt, caught 5 passes, and then saw an opportunity to transfer back to his home state because FSU was struggling and he wouldn't have had the chance to do so otherwise.

I think people are seeing that FSU name brand and thinking there is some trove of untapped potential. Not sure this is one of those instances. On top of that, this dude hasn't really played much live football in six years (high school).

I was just naming some in gerneral. Most that I listed here are from this year, and most contributed.

Holstein - Bama
Ojiegbe - Clemson
Matlack- K-State
Petrishen - PSU
Baer - tOSU
Davis - LSU
Reynolds, Krull, McMillon - Florida

If a guy has ridden the pine for like a year or two at an SEC school, I'm fine with taking a flyer. Or if he played sparingly for three years behind some stud - sure.

But other than that, I agree that I'd rather take a guy who has actually been playing/succeeding at football and wants to "transfer up."

Baer was a high school recruit, but you could add names like:

Hodges - Texas

Slovis - USC
Peterman - Tennessee
Hendrix - Tennessee
Gragg - Arkansas
Ulizio - Michigan
Jacoby - OSU
Lynum - Nebraska
Borders - Nebraska
Devonshire - Kentucky
Cooper - NC State
C'Bo - Notre Dame
Johnson - Florida
Jurkovec - BC
Griffin-Stewart - Rutgers
