Rumors about Oregon State interest in Barnes

I like the Stallings hire, that we won't know for a few years, but I'm positive about it

What choice do we have at this point. Not gonna rehash this but I'm not sure why you are optimistic about a guy who hadn't reached the sweet 16 in a decade and had trouble even getting Vandy to the NCAA tournament. And you like this hire?

Who cares? Unless we hire a complete butt head like Pedersen, there are many qualified AD's out there. The job is not rocket science.

Dixon did win the CBI back in 2012. Have some of that Stallings!!

Dime a dozen. He had to hire a guy to handle branding, he hired someone to do everything. We will be fine, with or without him.

So, it's not ok to criticize a coach at Pitt, unless you don't like the hire, and if you are in a select group. We got this correct ?

Because , we are not allowed to touch any football coaches, but can hammer basketball coaches , who haven't even been given a chance at Pitt, sounds kind of strange to me, but none of my business.....

I would hope both coaches are supported. I think we have two good coaches and backing to help them succeed.

I could certainly see Barnes leaving for someplace else at some point, but Oregon State? Now? If he even considers a move like that he's an idiot.

Good lord.... How long till we hear "Come Clean!!".... Perhaps the most embarrassing Pgh media moment in the past year... Eclipsed only by almost anything Ron Cook does or even thinks of doing....

Let's see if Pitt offers him a new, sweeter deal......
Oh,I hope not, prefer Pitt Hires a consultant and replace him? The way he handled the Dixon Buyout and Stalling Hiring was a complete joke and even the Media knew it mocking him, and this guy is overpaid, under qualified, and anyone was an improvement over Pederson.....Chancellor Gallagher need not tolerate such an AD that rewards his former failed AD's that hire him.

This kind of Sports Management is Dumb Jock Mismanagement and Pitt Needs to find another Dr. Juhl but in an Entertainment Industry or a Football AD not Basketball, and I hope Barnes goes home as soon as possible.

Clemson's Dan Radakovich would make a great Pitt AD and is from Western Pennsylvania knowing the mentality of the Region and Sports and carries great respect by being on the Playoff Committee and knows the ACC better than anyone. He is a Football AD that knows all about Pitt Region, ACC Landscape, and Power Conference Sports.

Here is Article on Athletic Directors from Forbes:

The Dynamic Role Of The Modern Day College Athletics Director:
Over the last several decades, the role of the college athletics administrator has changed dramatically. What once was seen as a job for retired coaches, has now transformed into a role that attracts some of the top executives both in and outside the sports industry...................
Qualifications necessary for athletic administrators on the Power 5 level include:

  • Evaluation and negotiation of multi-million (if not billion) dollar media rights deals, as well as navigation of conference network distribution and third tier rights. This includes comprehensive knowledge of revenue distributions, as well as a full understanding of what role an individual athletic department plays in the creation of content for the conference and the commitments required to meet quotas for media rights partners.
  • Ability to manage powerful head coaches who are often the highest paid employee(s) in the state. It is the responsibility of the athletics director to create an environment where flagship football and basketball programs can thrive while under the always scrutinizing eye of university administration, alumni and the general public at large. This pressure has led to expectations of total program turnarounds in just 2 or 3 year, with failure now leading to both the head coach being fired and the athletics director being put on notice.
  • Advanced knowledge of strategic, operational & financial business planning, including most significantly capital and investment budgeting. With the continuous escalation of the facilities arm race, Big 5 athletic directors are often responsible for the planning, fundraising and oversight of substantial capital projects that often reach similar investment levels to those seen in professional sports. Balancing an athletics budget is one thing, insuring that one can do so while simultaneously investing hundreds of millions more into facilities requires a far more advanced ability to manage cash flow.
    ...................
In the end, the modern day college athletics director brings with them a wide range of experiences and skill across a number of different verticals, but most importantly has the ability to adapt to an ever changing and volatile business environment. The best candidates, and subsequently the most successful administrators, are the ones who conduct their own research and determine whether they are both qualified and fit for a particular institution. The future leaders of college athletics in this country are equally intelligent and forward-thinking as they are bold and shrewd.

In fairness, the AD at Clemson has the distinct advantage of having gobs of money at his/her disposal. Compare that to being the AD at Pitt, whose alumni - while they give handsomely to Pitt's general fund - don't give as willingly to athletics.

Barnes's #1 priority at Pitt might just have to be fund-raising. Until Pitt comes-up with the kind of money that their opponents have, they will always be one step behind - in facilities, in recruiting, and yes - in keeping successful coaches from leaving for more money elsewhere.

Barnes did a great job with the Dixon buyout. There was no other way Pitt needed to get rid of Dixon and there was no way a school was going to pay the full buyout...he had to get what he could get and he did. I'll wait and see what Stallings does here before I bury him.

If Pitt wants to be the best then hire the Best in Proven Athletics and consistent with Pat Narduzzi Background and Mentality of Western Pennsylvania Youngstown Region and ACC FB & BB, plus NCS Championship Selection Committee. Knows how to run an Urban Program like GT with High Academics. Support building a New Stadium like at LSU. If you are rebuilding a Football Program with Pat Narduzzi then get a guy that knows the region and been at places that has the same challenges like Georgia Tech & Clemson and can adapt innovations and relate to the region.

Dan Radakovich is the athletics director at Clemson University. Previously, he was the Athletics Director at the Georgia Institute of Technology, a position he held from February 22, 2006 to October 29, 2012. He was previously the Senior Associate Director of Athletics at Louisiana State University.

Radakovich has a long background in dealing with program finance, as well as large scale renovation and facility improvement. Over the course of his career, Radakovich has managed over a quarter of a billion dollars for various universities' athletic departments.

Radakovich, a Serbian American, hails from Monaca, Pennsylvania where he attended Center High School, just outside Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He was a distingusehd graduate from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1980) where he earned a bachelor's degree in finance. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Business Administration in 1982 with a master's degree in business administration. Radakovich is married to Marlene Bryar.

At Long Beach State, he revamped radio broadcast agreements.

At South Carolina, he managed $33 million in facility improvements, including the Colonial Life Arena, now the home of USC's basketball teams as well as other sports.

At American University, he worked to get the school into the Patriot League. At LSU, he developed a football ticket donation program, and was involved in $90,000,000 renovation of Tiger Stadium.

When hired at Georgia Tech on February 22, 2006, Radakovich beat out former Tech player and head coach Bill Curry and former Tech baseball and football player and baseball assistant coach Cam Bonifay for the job. Radakovich improved the sales of season tickets for the 2006 football season, especially "chairback" or "club level" season tickets; hired football head coach Paul Johnson. He changed the way that athletic seating worked with the TECH Fund. The program also had several facilities changes, including a new indoor practice facility for football, Alexander Memorial Coliseum redesigned as Hank McCamish Pavilion, and rebuilt tennis facilities.

Radakovich oversaw the addition of additional student fees to graduate and undergraduate students at Georgia Tech. These fees were included above and beyond normal tuition to help pay for a poorly managed football team. These fees were not covered by the HOPE scholarship program for undergraduates or tuition waivers for graduate students. This effectively raised the cost of all Georgia Tech students to pay for a limited few athletes. This program was put in place before the great recession and has continued. The fees added under Radakovich's tenure were not poplar from the viewpoint of graduate students.

Also, during Radakovich's tenure at Georgia Tech the football program was investigated by the NCAA. The NCAA asked Radakovich to not tell others that the program was under investigation. Radakovich immediately informed Paul Johnson, the Georgia Tech football coach, that Georgia Tech was under investigation by the NCAA. The NCAA found out that Radakovich had informed Johnson of the investigation and levied a heavy penalty against Tech. As part of the penalty the NCAA took away Tech's 2009 ACC football championship.

On October 29, 2012, Radakovich accepted position of athletic director at Clemson University. In 2014, Radakovich pushed for a controversial proposal to implement a $350 student athletic fee which would have raised approximately $6 million in revenues for the Clemson Athletic Department. Radakovich's proposal would have been mandatory for all undergraduate students and voluntary for graduate students who chose to attend athletic events. Ultimately, the plan failed due to resistance from Clemson's Undergraduate Student Government, including a poll which indicated that 85% of students opposed the fee. Only months after the proposed athletic fee failed, Radakovich went before the South Carolina legislature asking for approval to purchase a $4.5 million Cessna Citation CJ2 for the Clemson Athletic Department. Lawmakers approved purchasing the private jet. As of April 2016, Radakovich is again embroiled in a fight with students over athletic funding. The Clemson Athletic Department announced a new student ticket policy which would require students to pay $225 for season tickets in the coveted lower deck seats of the student section. Students who choose not to pay for tickets may attend games in the upper deck, effectively stratifying students who choose to attend football games into those who can afford to pay for a season ticket and those who cannot. Clemson students are again mobilizing against changes to ticketing policies with a petition written to Radakovich, Clemson President Jim Clements, and the Clemson Board of Trustees in circulation. Additionally, Student Body President Joey Wilson has come out in opposition to the new ticketing policy.

Radakovich is a member of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

Not really, Clemson AD actually went after increasing Prices for Students Fees and upgrading a Jet for the Coaches to recruit and caused controversy in doing what is necessary. He has been part of rebuilding Clemson Football and building and renovating Facilities elsewhere. He is straight with his Coaches and refused to lie to them when the NCAA asked for him to remain quiet about the investigations, he refused and got fined, but is still respected by the College Playoff Selection Committee for doing it. He is willing to do what is necessary to advanec and protect Pitt Athletics into making sure Resources are there to build onto the future.

Barnes's #1 priority at Pitt might just have to be fund-raising. Until Pitt comes-up with the kind of money that their opponents have, they will always be one step behind - in facilities, in recruiting, and yes - in keeping successful coaches from leaving for more money elsewhere.
Barnes does not know the region or the ACC and had to use Pitt Money to hire an Former Boss Insider Consultant and lacks the confidence in himself and embarrassed PiTT Athletics in how he mishandle Dixon Buyout and Hiring a SEC Coach that mistreated his Players and all due to favoring Barnes' Consultant instead of taking care of Pitt! Barnes has proven he can't handle the job without his buddies that exploited him already!

i like Pitt chose Narduzzi that wanted to come to Pitt to stay at Pitt and rebuild Pitt Football Program and Teams. Barnes just wanted to advance to a Power Conference Program just like Pederson.

He could care less about Pitt, the region and that showed h=in hiring of another Toad like Stallings and not smart enough to see TCU was willing to pay for the full Buyout of Dixon to get their Alma Mater Coach that helped them get into the Big East.

He talks stupid and acted stupid on the Dixon and Stallings Buyout for his Buddies not for Pitt, and Barnes is stupid!

There is only one call to make in my opinion for Gallagher, call Jim Tressel and ask him what and who is someone perfect to work with Pat Narduzzi in Athletics and can handle big time Athletic Money to build with him a Program, On Campus Stadium, and that will help solve Attendance and be an Innovative Academic Building that knows the region.

Tell Barnes he should go home and take Stallings with him and his Conflict of Interests Consultants back to Oregon State! The way Stallings treated Jeter at Vandy was an example of a Selfish, Classless, and Petty Person not just a Bad Coach that was near being fired anyway. If the Pirates treated his son that way, he would be yelling and screaming.

Barnes also turned off potential Boosters by spending Pitt Money on Consultants that saved their Client's Job Stallings at Vandy and going to SEC to find a Coach to compete in the ACC that has only been to the NCAA 7 Times while passing up Younger Comers was a Joke and shows his own selfish demeanor of stupidity!

I had a chance I to talk with him for a good 30 minutes and I came away highly impressed. He was pretty straight forward and has a solid game plan for the direction of not only FB and BB but all the sports. He has hired extra fundraisers and revamped that whole department. He sounded very organized and the few folks who work with him I talked with told me he was night and day ahead of SP with regards in how to get things done and was highly motivated. I did tell him he came into a great situation with Pitt and that it was a sleeping giant. He agreed and again you could really sense he liked it here. Having said all of this I just don't think he would be looking for another job at this time. He came off as pretty down to earth without a big ego.

In an indirect way, you kind of proved my point. Eventually, Clemson DID increase their student fees for athletics. And yes, he DID get the decision-makers to approve the purchase of the plane. Their fans will spend whatever it takes to improve their football team. If he was at Pitt, he'd still be waiting for the increase in student fees and the purchase of the plane.

In the South, people are more willing to spend money on athletic (read: football) endeavors. (You'd undoubtably get a Clemson-type response in Central PA, where they proved that football is even more important that the welfare of children.) But at Pitt, it just doesn't work that way.
