Ryan Luther appreciation thread

I asked in a thread a month ago if he should be starting and got mostly no's. I think he needs to be in our starting lineup going forward. He was awesome tonight.

Ryan dominated tonight. Never should have come out when Pitt led 48-40. The kid has come so far this year. He needs to start. I love hearing the Zoo chant his name, and hearing "LUUUUU!!!" when he does something good.

Continually comparing him to what else we have on the floor. And it AIN'T much.

PS

College ball really SUCKS this year, TOP TO bottom.

Yea, so we are good compared to what?

All that ever matters... in any sport... is how good a team is relative to the competition they face for the championship.

The goal is to be the best in your sport THAT season... not necessarily the best of all time.

The 2005 Steelers were the best team in the NFL that season. They don't compare to the 1985 Bears or the 1978 Steelers. But they don't have to.... all they have to do is be the best relative to THEIR competition.

Pitt is somewhere between the 25th and 50th best team out of 351 teams *THIS YEAR*.
Some team is going to cut down the nets on the first monday in April. They will be the best THIS YEAR.... and it doesn't matter one bit how they compare to the '76 Hoosiers.

Someone on this board questioned his legitimacy as a D1 player. Might have been the same guy who said Steven Adams was was skinny and needed to stay at Pitt.

I've been saying all year that he needs to be played more or red shirted. He really should have been RS last year . He's the kind of player that made Pitt Pitt . An overlooked guy who came in and improved every year. I wish he'd have been a five year guy. Some guys have an innate knack ( bb IQ ) and sometimes this trumps athletic ability. The team is better with him in there play him more JD.

Luther = Onions
I thought he did a great job last nite. He scored inside and outside, he was on the boards and he made things difficult for Onuaku on defense inside. I am very encouraged by his progress this year.

I don't know if this happened with Luther, but I've seen a certain phenomenon in sports over the years, and it may be in play here. It's the younger guy who wants playing time but can't get on the floor. The starters or designated "stars" have talent, but drive the coach crazy by not doing what the coach wants--playing defense in this case. Then a player like Luther comes along and says to himself, "You know what? I'm not getting PT, nobody else seems to be doing what Coach wants, so I'm just going to go out there and bust my arse playing defense and see what happens."

It's the "buy in" moment for a player. The good thing is that it seems to have happened in his sophomore year. It's the kind of event that can make a leader and cure attitude problems on a team--and especially with newcomers who can look up to him.

Fingers crossed.

Agreed.

And Jamie has to reward it by starting him in place of Maia and playing him 30 minutes... as long as he's performing. If he's over matched against a certain opponent, then play him less.

Jones and Luther have earned more minutes because of effort and grit. Give it to them.

What killed me is our 2 "selfish" guys Young and Artis never looked for him late in the game. Even though he was playing lights out nobody wanted to give him the ball. He did pass up on that 3 though that I wish he shot.
