So the Saints finally wised up and cut Michael Mauti. This is what's wrong with the NFL and why its economics are unsustainable. The Saints paid this guy about $2 million -- which equates to some $43,000 PER TACKLE. This kind of salary madness has to end sooner or later.

The rationale is that an NFL career is so short that a player has to make as much as he can, as soon as he can. (I'm not saying that I agree, but it is what it is.)

Basically, it's the mission of an NFL player to make enough money in his short NFL career to set himself up for the rest of life.

This is the reason the NFLPA will never get what they want in the CBA, most of players can't afford to sit out year to force the owners hand.

The NFL minimum salary for a 2-year vet in 2015 was $585,000. Which is exactly what the Saints paid him.

The NFL minimum salary for a 3-year vet in 2016 was $675,000. Which is exactly what the Saints paid him.

Not sure what you're complaining about here --- Mauti is, admittedly, a borderline NFL player. He always has been. The Saints paid him like one.

If you think NFL players are overpaid, you need to get a grip on reality.
Yes and no. The marquee players deserve whatever they can get. But what's a punter worth? Or a long-snapper? Or a team's fifth (or sixth?) wide receiver?

Since you posted about his salary, I would expect you to have at least some idea about NFL salaries and the cap. Mauti was a minimum salary player, who mostly played special teams. It is pretty clear you are a loon, who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I'd bet you are far, far more overpaid (if you have a job) than Mauti or any other minimum salary NFL player.

Probably whatever the market sets. Same with your company's 11th best customer service specialist or 5th best HR rep or 7th best forklift operator. In fact, those positions are likely vastly more overpaid because Michael Mauti and most anyone with a functioning brain could likely fill those spots with little training and very little dropoff, while Kip, Gloria, and Wayne from Message Board Inc. can't come close to filling the NFL role. Plus, the NFL turns those spots over with reckless abandon, while most companies are deathly afraid of turnover, even if the outputs could be better.

He's had colitis for a long while now, including when he was in college. After his surgery he lost about 20 pounds. Him getting cut is no surprise. It would have been virtually impossible to continue after undergoing that, at least in the near term. As I recall, he's also had both of his ACL's repaired, so the game has also taken its toll on him.

The long snapper deserves whatever he can get too.

Swings both ways. You see guys getting cut for being too expensive too. Really, not too different than where most of us work. But I sure wouldn't want anyone telling me that I'm making too much. Especially if I worked in a profession as dangerous as football.

It's odd that anyone finds satisfaction in Mauti getting cut. I'm sure Mauti is disappointed in this development, but given his D1 career, opportunity to play in the NFL and hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank...he's had a pretty good life so far, not sure what there is to gloat about.

Mauti was a 7th round pick. He wasn't a big time recruit. He tore his ACL 3 times, and has suffered through significant health issues. He played in the league for 5 years, and had a really solid college career. He was never a superstar, but made the most of his somewhat limited natural ability. In many ways he achieved much more than he should have on the football field.

Looks like some on here didn't follow the waiver

He was a 4* recruit out of HS but a little slow.

It's just a fan being an idiot fan. Both sides have them.

You're right, he was rated higher than I realized as a recruit. He did get by with technique and smarts more than athletic ability. Either way he had a commendable career. I am by the way neither a Pitt or PSU fan, and watch both teams when I can. I am just a college football fan in general and like to see both teams do well.

Despite missing the last game of the season, due to a third torn ACL, Mauti was named first team All-Big Ten,[9] first team All-American, and won the Butkus-Fitzgerald Award for best Big Ten linebacker.

That's not a superstar?

Michael Mauti is an honorable man that stood up when others did not.

Correct. He was not a superstar, but he was a very good college LB. Lavar Arrington was a superstar. Derrick Thomas was a superstar. Luke Kuechly was a superstar.

I didn't question him as a good guy, but you are a PSU fan, so you think him "standing up for PSU" was a good thing. I disagree. I still wish him well and think the OP is a moron.

yeah more money in the billionaire owners pocket is what i want too

Mauti was an excellent college linebacker, among the best in the Big Ten during his senior season. The jump from that, to the NFL, should not be minimized, however. The NFL is full of linebackers that weigh 250 and run a 4.6.
