Mack - our best receiver
Ffrench - not really a traditional receiver - best at finding open spot on QB scrambles
Tipton - fine, but frequently hurt
Mathews - lacks receiver speed - could be used on slants, for some reason is not
Butler - might be ok -who knows, seldom thrown to
Shocky - might be Ok - who knows - relegated to jet sweeps
M.Smith - might be ok - who knows - he did draw some PI with his speed
Carter - my guess is not seen as a true receiver
Oneill - ???
Gipson - ???
Wayne - Narduzzi's has talked him up - says he will play - guess we will see

Really lack traditional receivers - sure don't have the big, strong discard the defender receivers you see every Saturday

Tight Ends - Garr, Griffin, Carrigan - not what you are looking for

Not having adequate TEs really hurts - there is no reason for this situation to exist - TEs are a dime a dozen

Agree that we lack the high-end traditional guys. It's turned out ok with the emergence of Ffench (who wasn't even recruited as a pure receiver) and the transfers of formerly unheralded recruits such as Araujo-Lopes and Mack, but this has been one of Narduzzi's weaker positions of recruiting. Mathews has had one of the weirdest careers here I can think of.

I don't know if Gipson was being counted on in any way. But he was on crutches during the game.

Does Pitt have a deep threat? Who is our slot, possession receiver?

Ffrench on your first question, no slot, maybe Tipton as a 3rd wr but not your traditional slot wr and possession wr?? Not really.

He is.

And yes, on a good P5 team he is a slot or a z type wr with a more talented WR on the other side.
You are right - I looked at last years stats - Ffrench had 6 TDs and more catches than Mack, Mack had more yardage in fewer games. Neither had the number of catches or yardage you would like.

Pickett does seem to look for Mack more.

I agree with your second point. I tried to illustrate just that I'm my receiver breakdown.

Sometimes recruiting non receivers as receivers works out great. See Tyler Boyd. I would rather we recruit polished receivers that actually played receiver.

Well we had no problem getting guys open deep against UVA. Early and often. The QB couldn't get the ball to them.

Mack's drop was killer but he's solid, he'll be fine.

Ffrench has actually become a good all around receiver and he really can fly. Needs the ball in his hands as much as possible.

Tipton looks like a good all-around receiver with some nice hands.

All 3 of those guys should be able to get open deep and have good enough hands to be possession guys.

Matthews is slow but it seems he could be more involved as a possession and shorter yardage guy.

Behind that is god knows what.

The TEs are a bag of jabronies.

I am still waiting for a Joe reply as the definitive answer of how many and who was open deep. Also how they got open deep and why the ball didn't get to them. Questions on flattened routes and abandoned rather than beaten coverage due to circumstance.

Did our receivers actually beat coverage, even taking advantage of broken coverages or did defenders actually choose to abandon coverage to react to the play happening in front of them?
