Credit where it is due. The Stallings affair was a disaster but making this hire was brilliant.

It was a no brainer hire. He doesn't get credit for it. The only thing Barnes was super awesome for was Kevin Stallings bank account.
Didnt he hire Suzy McConnell Serio too? Or was that Pederson? At the time that seemed like a slam dunk too. But that one didn’t turn out well.

Not sure why she was ever considered a slam dunk hire. Her record as a coach did not warrant that thinking.

Pitt was losing much of the best local players to other schools. Unlike the boys, the girls usually have 2 or 3 top 100 players every season. Get 2 a year and you have a pretty dam good team. She had the name and connections to keep the girls here. Her pro coaching and Olympic experience had to open a lot of doors outside the region. Sadly she didn't have the personality or temper to be a DI head coach.

At Duquesne.

Context matters.

She elevated Duquene, but never reached finshed higher than 3rd in the A10 and never reached the NCAA tournament. After she left, Duquesne has finished: 5, 3, 1, 7, 2, 3, 4, 9. Susie was also 1-4 against Duquesne while she was at Pitt.

Duquense's program improved after she left. Context does matter: Duquesne women's basketball, and the backyard prep women's talent in western PA, is not what it is on the men's side.

No knocking Susie's hire by Pitt...it was the obvious hire...but not IMO a homerun based on how she seemed to plateau there. I didn't have the expectations others did because you can win at Duquesne, in the A10, in women's hoops.

Right, which shows that perhaps the Duquesne coach that Pitt hired should have been Dan Burt, not Suzie McConnell-Serio. But no one knew that at the time.

Because context.

Pederson hired McConnell-Serio. Barnes hired Stallings, Vidovich, and John Hargis, the swimming coach.
