Before the season began, there was no shortage of Pitt football players on various watch lists. Now that the season is halfway, tight end Scott Orndoff still finds himself in the hunt for the prestigious Mackey Award given to the nation's top tight end. He is listed as one of 30 players in contention.

Orndoff has seen his production limited the past few years with J.P. Holtz around, but I've always thought he was an above-average tight end that could flourish a little more statistically if he was the main guy. Same for Holtz, actually. And we're starting to see that this year.

Orndoff already has a career-high with 14 catches this season and we're only halfway there. In addition, his 203 receiving yards are just shy of his career-best last year when he had 244. He's only had one game without a catch this year and also has a pair of receiving touchdowns. That 74-yard touchdown reception he had against Georgia Tech helped bolster his stats quite a bit.................

Overall, he's on pace for one of the best seasons by a Pitt tight end in recent years. Holtz's top output was his 350-yard season last year and that was the top year in terms of yardage since Dorin Dickerson topped 500 yards back in 2009.

I am encouraged to see that the playbook is finally including deeper routes for Orndoff. One more option that Peterman can feel confident in turning to when he needs to finish off an opponent late in a game.

Now if only Conklin and Naduzzi would be willing to trying new players at DB who might actually be able to keep their man from blowing past them for an easy 6. Finally, we might see Jackson a bit more. I think he showed potential. I am anxious to see if they will let Hamlin give it a go.

I Thank Coach Pat for bringing in OC Canada! What a change and not seen since since 1980s! It will only get better next year even with a New QB! He will be surrounded by a OLs, WRs, And RBs.

Yep, but Paris Ford will be Starting Gem, Just a Hunch!

Greene County just keeps producing these elite athletes!!!!!!!I jest.Good for Scott.

Your funny slick!!!!WVa hasn't annexed Greene County yet but maybe Mylan will buy us with Epi-pen money?????
WVU has many Fans in Greene & Fayette County just like PSU in Altoona with Pitt Fans mixed in between. I hope the Steelers take Pitt's Orndoff or USC's Taylor McNamara. I like Jesse James but his blocking is not up to par, and up to him to make it better. Still, glad he is on the Steelers and would make a great duo with Orndoff!

I've been saying it since last season, he has a lot of Sunday football ahead of him. He's a weapon and one of the better TEs in the country. he's having a decent year but he can do more for us if we let him. He is big, strong, and has the hands amd athleticism of an outside receiver.

Only major difference as a pass catcher between Orndoff and all-everything Michigan TE Jake Butt is the number of touches each gets in the average game. As blockers, both are good enough, but their real value is making plays.

Hopefully he sees more in the upcoming games.
