This is what everyone knows :
1)they’re in the ACC
2) money ..will Pitt be able to do the buyout and then pay the next coach enough to attract a successful coach and quality assistants
3) current roster ... not even close to good enough right now for ACC play
4) the last two experienced D1 coaches struggled in the ACC to win and to attract top talent
5) poor local talent base
6) no substantial booster support
7) small highly disgruntled fan base
8) believes in playing by the rules
9) plays in a beautiful facility that’s empty
Now your Heather and I’m successful enough where I’m at that Pitt wants me , sell me on the move .

We will pay you a million more than you currently make. Buzz Williams.

sounds like the same issues that Ben Howland faced...It takes a good coach and a few dudes...this isn't rocket science difficult...

And we won't force you to suspend your players for silly reasons.

And we don't care how you choose to recruit.. as long as you're getting top 20 classes.

And you get to start off with a lot of goodwill simply for not being Kevin Stallings.

Doesn’t sound like the Pitt way ! My thought is the only way to secure a top coach is to overpay I just don’t think the job especially right now is very attractive .

My thought as well. With very little to offer a rising coach you have to overpay

Pitt needs to quit the worthless virtue signaling and start signalling the fanbase and coaching candidates that it's now in it to win it.

Just so it's clear where I stand... any student at the university should be able to smoke as much weed as they want, as long as they uphold their academic and athletic responsibilities to the university.

Tens of thousands of student athletes manage this just fine every year.

This is the situation for almost every program that is not doing well and looking for a new coach. You always make it seem so impossible. Were you around at the end of Willard? It was worse then yet we did a good job actually searching for a candidate and finding a promising coach who had success and didn't have to break the bank.

Poor local talent base is very overrated. With AAU and Prep schools as well as Juco and 5th year grad transfers, you can still compete without a huge local talent base. Everything else you cited can also be turned around with a decent coach.

Add to that list...when Pitt has actually opened the checkbook and hired what seemed to be a top flight candidate over the years and put their money where their mouth was, they then undercut the coach and cut back on their financial commitment. The history of ongoing, consistent commitment is poor and I don't think this is lost on the coaching community.

You need a sales oriented athletic director, one that can do deals, sell, fundraise, recruit, galvanize the fan base, etc. You don't need an athletic director with a "compliance" background, particularly a women when mens sports produce all the revenue.

I like your first sentence.

Your second sentence is irrelevant.

The AD with a penis hired 0-18 Stallings. The AD without one is about to fire him.

Is the part about the Pete being so modern and beautiful still true? I mean it’s been 15+ years. Has Pitt invested in the types of Capital improvements necessary to keep the building as stunning and moderm as it was when opened? Especially in the areas of the facility that recruits would notice. Or has Pitt just sat back and done little. I don’t know the answer. Curious other’s thoughts and opinions on that subject. I visit many arenas and ballparks and the 15-year mark is usually the time when neglected maintenance and lack of investment starts to show. That’s why I ask.

It has been upgraded in the last couple of years and looks great. It is a top notch facility-at least top 6 in conference. One man's opinion.

The program won the 5th most games in the country over a 12 year period. The home court advantage was one of the best in college basketball history. Recently. Like modern. There are 340 teams.

Don’t read this message board and keep recruits away from it and you’ll be fine

Nailed it

PItt is not the easiest sell but its not near as bad as the self loathing yinzers make it out to be.

Pitt is an opportunity for an up and coming coach to show what he can do in a big time conference.

Pitt was willing to continue to extend Jamie Dixons contract and make him one of the highest paid coaches in the country.

The Zoo is nationally known as one of the best student sections in the country. When the program is good fans support the program as well as any other in the country. Its the ONLY HOOPs game in town.

The Pete is still one of the nicest facilities.

Pitt has shown loyalty to a coach in Pat Narduzi even when the immediate results have not been good Just show you have a plan and are headed in the right direction and you will have the full support of the admin.

Its really not that hard to sell the program for someone who has some business sense and knows how to sell PItt isnt Duke or NC but its still a damn good situation for a coach to have a great career. Hell half the fan base is wiling to give stallings an extra year to prove himself

I think it’s still pretty good from a fan perspective. It is certainly better than some other buildings like in Cincy or Hartford or Tallahassee (and far better than Morgantown). What’s hard for a fan to judge are things like the weight room, locker rooms, etc. Those are the types of perks which are hardest to keep competitive with programs making far more revenue.

Didn't we just sink a bunch of money into locker room and practice gym renovations?

Everyone with the wherewithal has been building these stand alone basketball training facilities.

Pitt's practice areas were built into the Pete, underneath the Sutherland Drive side rear-entrance concrete plaza. What is unbelievable is how spartan Pitt's practice facility has been until recently. It's still not up to snuff.

What they need to do is build on that concrete plaza which is otherwise a complete waste of under utilized space. They need a impressive, large basketball facility/office lobby on ground level that can directly connect into the existing Pete practice facility. It would bring Pitt's facility in line and also have the advantage of being directly connected to the competition venue.

Go for Hurley at Rhode Island & offer him 1.5 to 2 mil per year.

Looks like he's making around 950K per year rn.

Hurley is going to be one the hottest candidates available and is going to be in line for his choice of jobs. He can be selective. I don't know if Pitt could get him, because he is putting himself in line to take over at a bluer blood. Should have went hard after him two years ago.

I believe we did, but when you compare Pitt to the top of the ACC, we are just playing catch-up. As soon as you build anything, you’re already behind anyone building the year after you.

I think the unbiased conclusion would be that our facilities are plenty good enough to support a top team, but you aren’t going to sway a kid who is particularly impressed by opulence.

Eric Musselman is the guy you hire. He is making 1 million at Nevada. He has been successful in the NBA and College. Double his salary and give him enough to hire the assistants he wants to hire. The challenge of coaching against the best might be appeal to him because he is ultra-competitive. He is a good coach, recruiter, and develops his players. His buyout is 1 million.

I mean obviously. Its legal in like half the states anyway

My pitch to Mick Cronin:

You don’t think Cronin will want to stick around for next season when their arena reopens after nearly 100 million in renovations?

I assume you were aware that’s why they’ve been playing their home games across the river at NKU’s arena this year.

No way he’s going anywhere next year.

If the price is right. Cincy is in deep trouble financially

Cmon man I can’t see any coach leaving right before their new arena opens unless the NBA comes calling.

It would take north of 3M for him to come to Pitt, there’s no way they would ever offer that and he probably still wouldn’t take it.

Pitt’s entire program is predicated on things being solid enough that you won’t be written off right away for anything disqualifying, but there’s nothing to put you over the top.

I mean, when you say a school is top notch academically with solid facilities, ACC affiliation, and an urban feel you could be talking Pitt or Georgia Tech. Or even Boston College, really.

I just don’t think the things we point out as “we have so much to sell!” are all that special or unique.

We offer 3.5. Cincy can go as high as 2.75. Does he stay in Cincy for $750,000 less per year. Their AD didn't hire him and the relationship there isnt the best
