Sitting in the middle of a bunch of Duke fans at the Pete

I had 4 Duke fans to one side of me, and they looked like they just walked off the farm.

I had 2 Duke fans to the other side, from Ohio, neither of whom went to Duke.

In the mid 1960's Coach Frank McGuire came to South Carolina, when I had come to the age of following USC sports with a passion. By 1970 he had amassed a very good team with Bobby Cremins, John Roche, and bigmen Tom Riker and Tom? Owens, etc.. In those years they made three sweet sixteen appearances I believe. But the real story is that as good as they were, winning titles, undefeated ACC regular season in '70, ACC tourney champs in '71, (heartbreaker in '70 as Roche hurt his ankle the night before and was very ineffective in the championship game), South Carolina left the Acc after the '71 season due mainly because of the horrible treatment UNC and the like gave them. Though South Carolina was a "Charter" member of the ACC and everything was fine as long as South Carolina kept its lowly place but as soon as they started to compete the NC crowd wouldn't have it. South Carolina, in their eyes was just too poor and backward to represent the ACC.

It's important to realize the difference between the t-shirt wearing, bandwagon jumping fans and the actual Duke alumni.

Some Duke alumni are still snobby, elitist jagoffs but at least they aren't UNC grads.

But the t-shirt fans, much like the Domer t-shirt fans are the worst. Have never been to campus, couldn't find it with a road map, likely don't even know what state it's in. But yeah, they're loud and proud fans....

On a related note, while I realize tickets paid for are an investment that the ticket holder should profit from freely - any Pitt fan on this board that sold their tickets to this game - well you're disgusting. And while it can't happen I wish Pitt could just look up your seat location and sell them out from under you at any given time in the future when they have the ability to do so for a few more dollars.

Teams like Duke pick up fans all over that never have been on their campus. I sat next to 2 guys from Youngstown who rooted for the U at our football game and I asked why they rooted for Miami and one said he liked their uniforms.

I know- I couldn't believe how many Duke fans were there- man was it good they never got close, because there were enough of them that they could have gotten loud if given the opportunity. Ha ha.

There were "a lot" in the sense that there are rarely any visiting fans. I laughed when I heard Zeiss pre-game estimate 30% were Duke fans. That shows 2 things. Radio guys are bad at math and visiting fans always arrive early. I'd estimate no more than 300 Duke fans. Maybe 5-10 per section. So maybe 3% tops.

I'd say more than that, but the Zeise 30% number was ridiculous.

I felt it was in the top three games for visitor attendance. Syracuse had a game with a bunch. Maybe either UVa or one of the ND games.

I've traveled a lot, and we take for granted how few visitors we ever have to tolerate.

Actually I find UNC fans way more arrogant than Duke fans.

Tend to agree with this. Was at a holiday tournament a few years ago and UNC fans were borderline insufferable. So much so that we moved to a different spot after halftime.

..and they're every bit the snobbish pricks we thought they were. Fit the stereotype to a T.
unparalleled success for the last thirty years or so is one of leading causes of snobbish prickitopia...sure would be nice to catch that desease

Duke = the Penn State of college basketball. More success, but just as arrogant, annoying, and oblivious to everything.

The funny things is that I'd bet a lot of the PA-based Duke fans there are actually PSU alums/fans. PSU football fans seem to root for Duke bball since they dont have a bball team.

1) If you think all of college sports fans are graduates of that University or SHOULD BE, then you have no need to build these ginormous football stadiums and BB arenas. Because when I went to college, the first thing I realized is at least half of the people could care less about sports. As hard as that is to believe.

2) Duke has an enrollment of 14,000, ND around 12,000. So obviously while their alumni maybe powerful, their fanbase are decidedly not alumni.

There was a father and teen age son sitting 2 rows in front of us and to the left that were wearing bold lettered, "WE ARE PENN STATE" t-shirts. I saw the Dad slinking out with about 3 minutes to go when he thought none would notice.

When I think I might meet Dukies or others like that I break out my work boots, 25 yr old jeans, , fannel shirt, and army ranger scout hat. Don't forget the tooth pick to keep in your mouth and the old worn down pencil to keep on your ear. Oh yea don't shave for a day and if you have any camo wear it!
That throws them off big time!
One of our neighbors is a Dukie and when he has parties with his wall street college buds I wear similar garb just for fun!
We have some Harvards and MIT's in the neighborhood and they're fun to play with too!

I don't think they have to be alumni, but just jumping on the bandwagon of a team that happens to frequently win national titles, and act like you are a dyed-in-the-wool fan after watching them on ESPN a few times a year is borderline insane.

I have no NBA rooting interest in Pittsburgh, but I really hope GSW break the wins record and win another title. I won't parade myself around in a t-shirt and yell, "WE DID IT!"

The best experience with Duke fans was the game several years ago at the Garden. We were getting thumped for the entire 1st half and their fans were just relentless in their obnoxiousness and arrogance. The whole 2nd half, as we kept creeping back you could just see them getting uncomfortable and beginning to pucker up in the back end. Then the shot that tied the game and put it into overtime. The Pitt contingent was alive and every Duke fans at the Garden knew they were in for a fight. At the end of that game, as we all walked out chanting "Let's Go Pitt" I made it a point to "politely" bump into every Duke fans I could. I guess I was lucky to not end up in a fight, but it was worth every minute. Next to PSU fans, Duke fans are the worst. Hail to Pitt !!!!!!

Just go vote for Bernie Sanders and leave the capitalistic society to the rest of the sane people.

That's a very weird thing to do.

Why do you dress up like a hick to demonstrate your "blue collar" roots?

Que? Ohhh..so you're one of those guys. Ok, I get it.

I believe I admitted an understanding that the seats belong to the buyer, and I was speaking a bit more in terms of whimsy. Again, if you're the type of person that would rather make a buck on a game like that - have at it. It makes you an unmitigated douche and not such a great fan in my opinion, but that's just my opinion. You're entitled to being douchey, that's what's great about the world. If you're the kind of guy who would rather grump, give up, and say "I'll watch it on TV" we likely don't need you in the arena anyways.

But please, don't intimate that I'm incapable of understanding capitalism, or that I'm a socialist my good man. I'm neither. And I'm a very good capitalist - who dislikes bad Pitt fans that are good capitalists. I'm just a guy that didn't sell my seats because games like yesterday are the ENTIRE REASON I buy them in the first place. Because the money isn't that big of a deal to me, and I'd rather have the memories.

Go look at Dukes Rival message board and compare the tone of the posts to Pitts then come back and talk about their fan base.

I believe you understand capitalism better than the other guy.

I paid $x for my tickets, I could have sold them for $y but the utility value of those tickets to ME is $z. z>y>x

No good capitalist would sell for $y

In life you regret the things you don't do more than the the things you do. I'm with you here if your a bb fan there's no reasonable amount of money to make up for an experience of being in a packed area of crazy fans watching your team beat up on a big time rival.

There's nothing wrong with rooting for a school you didn't attend, it's just lame to root for different schools in different sports (and worse than lame if they happen to be insufferable about their fandom).
