I've been tough on Capel the last year or so. But considering where we were he's done a nice job recruiting. Especially since the program has been pretty down his whole tenure. Getting the twins was huge because even if he is fired next year I have to think they and Cummings would stay for the next guy. Which is a bonus too.

I believe Cummings only has one year.

He hasn’t recruited well enough and his teams have had serious deficiencies in the post until Big John and in 3 pt shooting . Any grade school coach could figure out how to defend against his teams .

No it isnt. His class of Murphy, Coulibaly, Drumgoole (and Champagnie) is one of the worst in program history
Not on paper it wasnt. Drumgoole was ranked in the top 150, Pennie has some decent offers. Murphy and AKC were two reaches for a shooter and a big. That to me sounds like most pitt hoops classes of the past 20 years

I’m not sure I can buy the “recruiting has been fine” argument. The twins they just signed are intriguing so I’m open minded there, but I’m not sure how you can look back on his tenure and come to that conclusion?

I liked the first class, but I think when you take into account their performances here and at their transfer schools, you can really only say Toney developed into a good college player. XJ was fine but erratic and I think it’s fair to say McGowens was a disappointment. Champagnie is the best recruit of Capel’s tenure but the rest of that second class was awful. Hugley looks to be developing into a good college player but now Femi/Collier are gone and Jeffress has shown very little indication that he can contribute meaningfully at this level. Last year was just Santos who had very, very brief moments in year one but I think it’s optimistic to project him out as anything more than a role player.

Depending on how low you set the bar, you could look at that and say it’s OK but I just can’t get on board. Capel’s one defining trait coming in was that he could elevate recruiting. If you want to shrug and say “well, it’s on par with what we’re used to” that’s fine but the whole point of Capel’s appeal was that we should be bringing in a better level of talent.

I agree that the twins are at least an interesting pair of recruits and 2 guys to keep an eye on. But overall, this class that Capel is bringing in has so far been underwhelming at best and certainly not what we were led to expect from Capel.

He was supposed to be a great recruiter and he hasn't been even average. The level of talent he has brought in and is bringing in is very mediocre to poor. Then you add on the fact that he is a very poor game day coach and doesn't prepare his players for games and you have what we've had for the past 4 years. There will be a lot of empty seats in The Pete this year....again.

THAT is the correct answer.

I think his recruiting overall has been mediocre at best. And I agree retention is a big part of that. Because even when the recruits were at Pitt they never gelled well together and are always leaving for one reason or another.

My comment was about the incoming class. I expected it all the be low level older transfers. I just think despite the program in full on dumpster fire mood so far he's been able to find some interesting players. Look it helps that Cummings is from the area and the twins are unknowns. But still better than I expected at this point.

Please refrain from acknowledging any thing that Wanstash or JosephineDavid have to say about Capel. It’s a fight to the death to see which one can fit both of Capel’s balls in their mouths.
They have Zero credibility when it comes to this PUTRID STAFF AND PROGRAM..

Capel has some big bull balls so sometimes it's difficult

This is the right answer.

There's nothing about Capel's tenure that has been "fine". It has been a disaster.

And as far as "so far, so good", how so? Does anyone think next year's roster, no matter how it realistically finalizes, will produce any meaningful improvement over the last couple of years?

Nope. Last year’s roster was the worst we’ve had and this one looks even worse as of right now while other ACC teams are buying the best transfers

I think they'll be better especially offensively but will it be of any meaningful in increase of wins???
With the potential of the ACC improving a ton? Hard to say right now

I'm convinced we have some good bigs now and possibly a few slashing guards. But we lack the pace and space/3 and d/athletic wing type pieces everyone wants these days. Idk if we'll be able to score enough without more shooting and if we'll be able to switch on screens without getting killed.

Did you watch the twins shoot from 3 ?

Having players that size with range is something Pitt has never had ( except for Mo ) .

This is one of the worst takes in smf illustrious history of painfully dumb takes.
He has conveniently excluded Champagnie from other arguments about Capel’s recruiting in the past too. Look, Capel has failed mightily here, but he should be credit for recruiting an All-ACC, NBA player.

He got one decent player in 4 years. Even some of the better ones that I'm sure someone here will cite are marginal, at best, or they bailed on Capel because they know what he is and where he is going. Yeah, that's "so far, so good".

Smf posts his thoughts and all he gets is ridicule. He cares about Pitt. I can see it in his posts. Why so much hate? Why so much bullying. It is bullying at an adult level. Pitt fans should stick together. HailtoPitt! Remember who we are. We are Pitt!

And he's a hoopie.
