The last game against Syracuse was one of the best Pitt wins I’ve seen in a long time. Today was maybe the most impressive second half I’ve seen from Pitt in a long long time!!!

Some thoughts:
  • Champ - obviously - is the REAL DEAL! Tremendous body control. Such great instincts on the offensive glass. An absolute pleasure to watch play.
  • X is the engine of this machine. And when he’s humming it can be a very well-oiled machine.
  • Those who bailed on Horton right away? I’ll trust HCJC’s evaluation on shooters. IH wont do this every game. But he IS capable.
  • The D was impressive for the most part. Collier’s inexperience made it tough for him to guard Dolezaj late in the 1H. But other than that it was generally very solid.
  • Femi is a player. And he’ll keep improving.
  • Right now, this team is GOOD. How much better can they become this season? Gonna depend on some things. COVID being one of them.
  • No Sibande today. Hope NIKE is OK. He can be another weapon in the arsenal.

Great thoughts. I do think losing Hugley is going to cost them a couple of games because as we've seen, both Brown and AKC struggle to control their fouls and can go through long periods of ineffectiveness.

That was freaking awesome. I’ve been pretty reserved about this team and pretty critical of the fundamentals of the players but gentlemen... that was an absolute clinic on how to beat a zone. The actions and movements were amazing. Gonna crack some beers tonight enjoy the victory and watch the Ravens get absolutely embarrassed tonight.

Champ has emerged as a superstar. He is that guy, that guy a UConn had, a Louisville that would just light us up.
X has emerged as a true PG and leader.
Toney is that swiss army knife, that perfect Pitt player who is a terrific college BB player that just keeps on getting better. It has been awhile since we have seen guys really improve.
Horton has become exactly what was advertised. A real shooter, again, those guys that Lville or UConn or Syracuse always had.

What is really heartening, we are seeing guys once again getting better. Which bodes incredibly well for Femi, Jeffress, AKC and Collier.

This game, this second half is highlights I show recruits. You can win here, you can have fun here.

Can you imagine what this team could be if Capel was able to land Cockburn or Wahab? The only missing link is at the Five. With Big John possibly gone Capel has to get us a center, maybe a transfer. We can be damn good next year, and we are starting to see that we are pretty decent right now. I worry about teams that are strong inside. Other than the five, Capel has landed enough talent that we can match up anywhere else.

Sure. But it didn’t work out that way as far as recruiting those bigs. Still, I think Pitt has enough other potential weapons on O that scoring from the 5 this year is pretty much just a luxury. So that means what Pitt needs from the 5 spot right now is D and boards. AKC, TB and NC will be tasked with providing that.

Ideal? Probably not. But, again, with scoring not being essential from any of them, Pitt has a chance to get by with those 3. (Max A would seem to destined for a year of practice and seasoning and would be used only as a last resort this season).

Now if Horton can just make shots outside of the obvious low pressure situations 🙃 @BballinsiderfromPitt

Your writeup seems about the same as mine, being just as effective with far fewer words!! But I found the COVID comment interesting, not because it's inaccurate (it totally is) but because the amount of fun this game was made me actually forget about COVID for a while.

Does Horton remind anybody else of Gibbs? Mostly in his shot and release?
Nope. Not a bit. Very different form & release IMO. Horton appears to me to be a more natural shooter. More natural than pretty much anybody I've seen here in the last 40yrs.

Gibbs shot with an unusually flat trajectory for a successful 3-ball shooter.

Gibbs was like a magnum cartridge - a high velocity low trajectory shot. Hortons is like a more traditional round - with a lower velocity and more arc.
