So we’re officially good for the field of 64, right?

I was focusing on actual performance of the team in defense, rebounding, transition, and turnovers. I don't pay much attention to betting lines. They mean little relative to actual performance.

Actually they give you a pretty good idea of what your expectations SHOULD be.

Like today for example, if you were expecting a 20 point Pitt win, Pitt only winning by eight wouldn't mean that Pitt underachieved, it would mean that your expectations were out of line with reality.

ESPN Gasaway moved Pitt from work to do to should be in. “Things are looking much more solid for the Panthers” but he stopped short of moving Pitt into the lock category. He has 22 teams competing for the last 13 slots. 6 are should be in:
- Pitt
- WVU
- Auburn
- Memphis
- Boise
- FAU (if they aren’t a AQ)

16 are in the category for work to do including 3 PAC, 4 Big 10 teams and 3 ACC teams.
Boise is just so lol

Conversely.... he just posted that Duke will win by 12 tomorrow. So if Pitt loses by single-digits, it means Pitt played a good game (in his mind).

Actual performance was hanging 89, and scoring 8 more than the opponent.

If we don’t make the tournament after beating ACC teams 15 times this year, we need to go independent in hoops. Eff them and bojangles.

(In all seriousness, we are fine)

I think 7 is our ceiling and we need to win the ACC Tournament to get it. If we beat Duke and Miami and lose in the championship game we're an 8.

So maybe it's better we lose to Duke, get a week+ of rest to get ready for the Dance.

But again, I still want to beat Duke lol
Winning the ACC tournament would be really nice.

Entirely possible that I'm overestimating how high we can go, but anecdotally recall over the years appreciably higher seeds given to teams that won their conference tournaments.

Seed doesn’t matter as long as it isn’t an 11. Otherwise, we are in the full field, and in a group of teams that we can beat.

The difference will be if we win. Avoiding a 1 would be nice.

It’s not far fetched that we are between the 21st and 24th best team. But those last two losses likely blew our chance to have a full resume that reflects that.

The committee doesn't have the same anti-Pitt bias you have. They watch the entirety of the game and saw Pitt win by the margin they were expected to win by.

LOL! You have zero idea about any bias I may have. I've been a Pitt fan for longer than you've been alive. I watch the game for the game it is and appreciate all the parts of it, not just the score. A team can play badly in one area or another and still win. That's what happened to Pitt today. They played poor defense, turned the ball over, and didn't rebound. But they won anyhow because they were better than our competition in other areas. At this stage, I would hope we are.

They played poor defense in stretches. Not the entire game.

A: Unless you've been a Pitt fan for 56 years, you haven't been a fan for as long as I've been alive.

B. Pitt had 9 turnovers today. Anytime you have single-digit turnovers, you did not have a turnover problem. Pitt had a bad 3-minute stretch with respect to turnovers, but protected the ball fairly well for the other 37 minutes of the game.

C. Pitt outrebounded GT 34-33.

D. If you think the committee looked at this result as even the slightest bit negatively with respect to Pitt's chances to be selected then you are clueless.

We played defense well in the first half, turned it over only nine times, and outrebounded them by one. Is it possible that your expectations are a little too high?

That was my point. Especially poor defense in the second half. And with our height advantage, we were even on rebounds. But we did win. I give GT a lot of credit for how aggressive and full of energy they were in the second half.

Your points are valid. But sometimes I try and look at Pitt not through my blue and gold colored glasses.

BTW, I've been a Pitt fan since 1959. That's 64 years, I believe. I've seen a lot with Pitt football and basketball. I try and be realistic but always want the best for Pitt and expect them to do better than they are doing.

My expectations are always a little too high. I've lived my life with a little too high expectations.

I'd probably pick that over making the sweet 16, it would be so cool to cut down some nets again.
Honestly I think you’d have to at least make the Sweet 16 to validate an ACC tourney championship.

25-10 and we are a 5 or 6

0% chance of making it up to a 5 seed.

0.1% chance of making it up to a 6 seed.
It would be difficult for the Committee to not seed Pitt as at least a 6 should they win out. It would mean, most likely, beating Miami (after Duke, of course), and then maybe UVA/UNC. That would put us 2-1 vs Miami; 1-1 vs Duke, 2-0 vs UVA or 3-0 vs UNC. We should have at least no worse a seed than any of those three, IMO. But given the perceived "weakness" of the ACC, who knows. Let's win out and then see ...

Lose to Duke we will be a 10 seed most likely

Beat Duke lose in semifinals we'll be a 9 seed

Beat Duke and win in semifinals but lose in finals we'll be an 8 seed

Win our last 3 games to win the ACC Tournament we should be a 7 seed.

Pitt would have to pass about 20 teams to make it up to a 5. It ain't happening, even with an ACC tourney title.

I think a 7 is our ceiling and a 10 is our floor at this point.

It’s hard to say 10 is our floor when we wake up today with an aggregate 11 seed on Bracket Matrix and there still are probably 10 or so teams which could pass us. They all won’t, of course, but if we lose, we obviously can’t go much higher.

So, let’s say Bracket Matrix is off by 1 seed, let’s say we are a 10, not an 11. Well, if we lose, even if we were the best 10, it only takes 4 of those teams to pass us for us to go to an 11.

I think Dayton still very much in play if we lose and (for example) Az St wins, Ok st wins, Mississippi St makes a run, Rutgers or Michigan wins 2 games etc, Penn St beats Illinois and Northwestern.

Still a lot of games left

Bracketmatrix hasn’t updated yet but spot checks agree. See

@PittPoker & @UPitt '89 I have no reason to think that you're wrong on this, and it's highly unlikely that we win the ACC tournament, but if we win the ACC tournament, I would be willing to wager that we end up better than a 7 seed.

Let's just win one more. I don't want the drama of Dayton.

Dayton isn't even the NCAAT, for all intents and purposes. It's an extension of the conference tournaments and a play-in game. If you play in Dayton, you're just trying to make the official field. So no thanks.

"Validate" ? Who cares about that? Hang the banner and it's history, PERIOD? CHAMPIONS!!! BOOM!!! When did people start overthinking this crap so much? :) :) :)

When Virginia lost to UMBC as the #1 seed did they take down their ACC Championship banner?

And who cares if we go to Dayton, it's just another part of the tournament, if you play in those games, you are in the NCAAT
