All of the buzz around Rodney Gallagher-----and the buzz is justified, I have seen him and he is the real deal,he is very very athletic and explosive yet has great court awareness for a ninth grader)----- has people searching for information about Laurel Highlands School District. Here is the background.

Laurel Highlands is the “ suburban” Uniontown school district. in fact, the two are schools so close together that the high schools themselves are barely a mile apart.Uniontown High School, of course, is one of the most story basketball programs in PA history .They have won multiple state and WPIAL championships and still hold the WPIALrecord for consecutive basketball victories, quite an accomplishment particularly since it was done always at the highest WPIAL classification, and against tremendous competition in the 1960:S when high school BB here was as good as anywhere. So hoops has always been "big" in Uniontown area

The Laurel Highlands school district is a merger of the old South Union and North Union high school‘s. It came in to being in 1967 and right off the bat they assembled a great team consisting of Will Robinson, Jim Hobgood and Buzzy Harrison. They won a state title in 1968. All three of those guys went to major Division 1 basketball programs

In 1971LH featured Gus Gerard who went to UVA and then went on to an eight or nine year career in the ABA and NBA

Since then they have had only modest success and have always been overshadowed by Uniontown which continues to put out very competitive teams and competed for more WPIAL and state titles in th e80's 90's and into the 2000's.With the notoriety around Rodney Gallagher, Uniontown may find itself in a very unusual position of playing “ second fiddle“ to his neighbor

I graduated from Uniontown Area Senior High in 1975. I moved away long ago.

I am very happy for Laurel Highlands in winning the WPIAL title for its classification.

I have seen PA school district map and LH is entitely surrounded by Uniontown school district. Its like a little island inside Uniontown SD which I found odd. Why is that? Without knowing, I would have thought they broke away from Uniontown due to race like TJ/Clairton but you are saying it was a merger. Well, what did those boundaries look like before the merger?

People keep making that claim, but TJ (West Jefferson Hills School District) came into being in the late 1950s, when the racial demographics of the area were very different than they are now.

Someone actually from that area can explain it better than I, but North Union and South Union Townships are adjacent to Uniontown. North Union and South Union used to be their own school districts, but in the 1960s they merged to form Laurel Highlands.

I can explain, and race has nothing to do with it.

.The City of Uniontown is the heart of the Utown school District .Think of it as a circular hub.Think of two concentric circles surrounding the town. Since pre-Civil War days , the first circle of land surrounding the City was composed of North Union and South Union Townships which each had their own school systems, A second outer second circle containing certain other townships (part of which extends as far as th esurrounding mountains up to the Nemacolin Resort) is once again part of the Uniontown School District. Thus the Utown Dist consists of the City hub and the the outer most circle , whereas North and South Union Twps.form the middle circle or collar immediately surrounding the City.

In 1967 North and South Union merged to form Laurel Highlands School District.Historically, the Uniontown district was always regarded as the better academic school but in recent yrs that has changed somewhat . In any event, race had nothing to do with this odd configuration with the hub and the two surrounding circles.

If I recall correctly, LH beat Donora in the WPIAL finals. Ken Griffey Sr. played for Donora.

I wonder if Rory will get a crazy growth spurt.
How tall are his parents?

I saw the game Friday and was big time impressed. I just wonder if his parents decide to move him to a basketball school to play against better competition.

OK but why is LH a little "island" completely inside the Uniontown school district?

That was a great explanation of the situation. Unusual on this board!

Temple was hoping against all hope it did he's one of the boards top race baiters.
Now he has nothing to talk about. Until this second. Watch.

As Souf pointed out, "Family" (AKA Buffett) doesn't seem to comprehend what he reads . . . that is, IF he reads.

Me a "race baiter"? Ah, consider the source.
