Could (maybe should) have been a 3rd straight P6 road win for Pitt. This one and VCU were tough L’s.
Some pertinent stats
Points in the paint: Vandy 30; Pitt 12
2nd chance points: Vandy 15; Pitt 9
Points off TO’s: Vandy 15; Pitt 9
Bench points: Vandy 30; Pitt 4
So just 4 bench points for the game By Pitt. All by Fede. He played well. But a key play occurred late when FF got fouled after a great bounce pass feed from Nelly. FF had a point blank attempt underneath. But he was unable to convert the FG through contact, then made just 1 of 2 FT’s. If that layup goes in, who knows?
Hinson missing both ends of a 2 shot foul in the 2H during Vandy’s run.
Thought Burton was clearly fouled on more than one attempt driving to the goal with no call. The contact to his body resulted in missed FG attempts on those occasions. The alleged double foul where Jamarius had his arm grabbed and he was pulled down was also extremely dubious.
Elliott shot the 3 so well that when he missed, it was a surprise. Really hope he keeps stroking it like that. Greg & Nelly combined to go 9-15 from 3. Impressive.
Nelly had probably his best offensive game. 18 points. 5 assists. Another very clever reverse layup off of a baseline drive. 6-9 FG shooting (3-6 from 3). 3-3 FT’s Just unfortunate that jumper he hit with 9.7 seconds left didn’t result in the last 2 points of the game.
Finally, on Hugley. 0 rebounds. 8 points. 2 assists and 3 TO’s in 23 minutes. Not very positive or productive. Looked sluggish on the D end and at times seemed like he had a lead weight strapped to him he had so little lift and elevation when trying to jump. Imagine that HC JC is trying to play the long game with JH: to get him in shape and accustomed to game speed and intensity in the OOC part of the schedule. But have to wonder if the HC may be 2nd guessing himself some about the usage of JH vs FF last night? Or even JD-G for a bit?
Lighter load of games over the next couple of weeks with finals taking place. They really need John to get a lot of treatment on the knee and as much conditioning work in as possible. If he is unable to respond favorably, then it would appear that HCJC has to seriously reconsider playing time usage of guys at the 5, would have to believe.
