Watched the game with some of my hometown Pitt friends. A great time together, despite the disappointing outcome. It seemed as if many of us were stating similar things during the game, so my observations are nothing surprising, but I wanted to put them out there.
1) There were a few starters on offense, but it was not the team we saw out there earlier in the year for sure.
2) We were worried about Pitt's motivation, but it seemed like the intensity and will to win were there.
3) It was a consensus that fans wanted to see what Duggar could do, and got our wish. Other than the pick 6, he was really good, especially in first action. They wanted him to redshirt, but could have still used him at BC.
4) Dez was his usual self, tough and impactful, but his injury issues continue to plague him. Goff did an admirable job in his PT.
5) The defense was disappointing to say the least. Couldn't get to the QB, even during blitzes, and subsequently guys got open. Blitzes on two pt conversions hurt.
6) The second pick 6 was a killer. Pitt had a 10 pt lead, and the ball. Changed momentum and got Toledo back on their feet. It is tough enough to win throwing 1 pick 6, two is a killer. Remember Syracuse?
7) Fans were shocked at the play call of Bart throwing to Ghost. Nice design, poor time to call it. 3rd and less than 2 to win game. Pitt had success running all game. Why not go to QB sneak under center with a RB push? Two downs to score. Then a FG call. We all agreed two of worst calls that we could remember. The win was there for the taking. No doubt in my mind Pitt scores a TD there running the ball. I don't like shotgun from goalline, but it is very common now.
8) This year surely produced a spectrum of emotion, but it is tough going into offseason with 6 straight losses, especially after a 3-9 season.
9) There is always hope for better next season and some talent returns. A tougher schedule is ahead, but if Pitt can keep impact players and pick up a few portal additions for need, it could be a satisfying year.
10) Our group enjoys the camaraderie of the tailgates, gamewatches, and games themselves. Many different opinions and perspectives among us, some positive and some negative (prevalent now), but we all are big fans will look forward to next year, and hope that it will bring success and exhilaration.
