Thry say he robbed a bank. What a shame. Kid had a ton of talent, but never could seem to get on track.

Wow - that's too bad. Didn't he have some medical emergency at one time and almost died?

Bank robberies average about 2 to 5 K in total take. More than 75% of those who rob banks are caught. In short, those who rob banks are usually very desperate individuals who really aren't thinking it through.

FYI, Pope was shot while he was a senior at Aliquippa, and his heart stopped during a workout while he was at Seton Hall. This kid overcame so very much - including his own mistakes and in the end it wasn't enough. I'm rarely sad about these kinds of stories but I was hoping this guy would get far enough out to get out.

There's no mention of this anywhere on the internet, including the Seton Hall board. Are you sure about this?

Pope was an a-hole, plain and simple. I sat next to him and JO Straight at the State Bball Championships and he got in a full-blown shouting match with an old man about what schools were recruiting him. It was totally unprovoked, Pope was just irritated that the guy was talking to him. Straight had to talk him down. He was shot, yes, among many other issues. It would not surprise me at all he robbed a bank because he had a LONG history of bad decisions. He was a very talented player and I wanted him to sign with Pitt badly until I witnessed this incident, and then the not shaking hands incident after the Quips blew the state championship against Prep Charter and the NBA's Morris twins.
And here's another incident:

I saw this story on local Pittsburgh TV news (WTAE). It is strange that it is nowhere to be found on the web.

There are a couple of people talking about it on Twitter but no print or internet media coverage. Weird.

I don't understand why posters post " wow that's sad" when the individual elected to rob a bank and was caught.
It'S good that they caught him now throw the book at him like they should for all criminals!
Thank you law enforcement and our great system of justice!
Maybe it will deter others from doing the same thing and convince them to make the right choice.
This is what happens when kids are one dimensional and sports doesn't work out for them. I bet he was pushed threw his HS based on his athletic abilities, didn't have a lot of job options and choose bank robbery. Life is all about choices! This one was a bad one so maybe he'll learn a lesson and get on the right track!

I'm not defending Pope at all. He has had many incidents in his life where he made horrible decisions and mostly because of his athetic abilities he got second, third, fourth and umpteenth chances, only to go on to make more bad decisions.

I would however point out that doing anything else with his life was probably unlikely. His home life was almost non-existent. He was shuttled from town to town and house to house solely because of his basketball ability. He was treated like a 6-8 side of beef. Yeah, others have gone through the same things and learned to grab a piece of stability somewhere along the line. Pope had a chance at stability and success when he came back from DC to Aliquippa and lived for a while with the family of a former Pitt football players who were his cousins. Many others have gone on from that kind of situation to build a good life.

He also had JO Stright as a sugar daddy. Maybe that relationship was a positve and maybe a negative. Pope eventually turned on Stright, too, punching out a coach at a national AAU tournament and effectivly destroying JOTS. By many accounts, he personally had a prickly personality at best. Both Terelle Pryor and Fella reportedly said they woud never attend a college where Pope was.

After the JOTS incident, most schools recruiting Pope walked away. New Mexico State took him in and fought hard to get him qualified. He rewarded their help by transferring to Seton Hall after one truncated season. He has had numerous off-court incidents, too many to recount here. He just makes bad decisions.

Herb Pope was dealt a bad hand in his personal life but was also given a talent that gave him an opportunity to rise above his start. His consistently bad decisions destroyed that opportunity. Character counts as much as talent.

I think this comes under the title, "dog bites man". In other words, not surprising. Some people are bad people. Herb Pope is a bad person. Simple as that.

Good post Harve. Not making excuses for this kid or any others who came up tough and end up dead or in prison, but the environment a lot of these guys come up in is unimaginable to the vast majority of us. What are your odds of future success if you grow up without parents or strong parental figures? As you said, a few exceptionally mentally tough people do, the rest end up like this or worse.

robbing a bank in this day and age is a terrible idea. If you want to do this, you got to go hard, bring at least 4 people with you, go all out.. Got to think about the risk vs reward.. One or two idiots aren't going in and hitting the vault, they are hopefully getting whats in one teller's drawer. Seriously how much is that, 500 bucks maybe? You're gonna go after $500 bucks, much better options with much less security. People need to think. Hell, you are better off doing one or two big time drug deals if you want that kind of money. You are from beaver county, I am sure you know a few people that could use some help..

Great post and what a shame - Herb becomes a number in an overcrowded prison system after ignoring 100's of lifelines all of us Fans can only dream about. Sad...

I'm wondering...with this news and now that he is obviously an adult and this isn't the first time he's been arrested, it is warranted to actually now tell people why Pitt backed off? He's wasted his second, third, and fourth chances, so I think it is, but I'll let others weight in.

Let's just say this degenerate should have been in jail, for a long time, before he even graduated from high school.

Could have never seen this coming. huh?
I couldn't have seen THIS coming. At 6'8" it is a bad idea to rob a bank. Drug deals, home robberies perhaps, but knocking off a bank when you are that noticeable is another level of stupid.

The next time or the first time any of you plan to rob a bank don't do this:

A 40-year-old Chicago area man allegedly robbed a Chicago bank on Friday using a threatening note written on the back of his own pay slip, which was printed with his name and home address.

Writing the robbery demand note on the back of a pay slip, business card, or utility bill apparently isn't a best practice! Who would have know???

I see the makings of a lucrative writing opportunity:

That has happened quite a few times before.

This is a shocking comment...will be said...by nobody.

Would you care if Dujuan Blair went to jail now? I mean I wouldn't, I'd still have fond memories of when he played at Pitt, and honestly don't care where he is or what he does anymore, he was just a character on my favorite TV show for 2 years.

Bad comparison. Blair had no off the court issues when he was a recruit. Pope had trouble written all over him.

Having said that while I wish no ill on anyone I couldn't care less if any stranger goes to jail. If anyone does something worthy of being in jail that's where they should be. But it's my preference that Pitt doesn't bring kids like Pope into the program when you know what a problem it could be. He was so bad everyone backed off of him. Everyone that mattered relative to his talent anyway.

In my opinion empathy is the most important trait a person can have.

Some of you exhibit zero of it, it could be a facade because we are on the Internet or it could be who you are. It's no way to live life in my opinion.

I haven't had an easy life but I haven't had it as bad as others. And it was the best thing for me and why I am a successful person. It's ok to think this is sad and still want him punished. It's ok feel bad for people and want to help them.

I'm not saying anyone in this thread isn't expressing empathy either, just this board in general

That's very nice of you, its your opinion and we all have our opinions, values, and beliefs!
I have zero empathy for people who choose to do bad things!
On the other hand I have a lot of empathy for people who bust their as-, try to do the best they can do with what they have and bad things happen. Those are the people I help!
fyi -I can't imagine people having one set of online values and beliefs and another face to face personality.
For me like it/me or not its one set of values and beliefs and I could care less what anybody thinks about what I think!
Those who adjust their thinking to be liked or popular especially on a message board stand for nothing and have no values!

I never would have guessed that you would take a position like this.
