this time at home against Incarnate Word (4-5) by like 20 points. I don't care much about St Johns, but it's just shocking how quickly they fell from middling to awful.

Incarnate Word was coming off a 99-97 loss to Our Lady of the Lake.

Bad as they are, they are actually doing better than I ever thought they would. I posted on here last month that they lost to St.Thomas Acquinas in a pre season scrimmage by 32 pts. St. Thomas is a N.Y area DIV 11 school....yes that's right DIV 11.
Since then I've seen them three times on tv and they are terrible. Yet, they did beat Syracuse (Boheim suspended) Niagara, Rutgers and a few others. They have "average" talent at best. Durand scored 15
(3 of 6 from threeland) last night against Incarnate Word??...who in hell are they? Better yet, how did they ever lose to them at home by that many pts?
IMO Durand is probably their most talented player but he's as streaky as ever.

They are actually in the same conference, the Southland, as recent Pitt opponent Central Arkansas. But they are certainly better than Central Arkansas. Last year Incarnate Word was 10-8 in league games, 18-11 overall, Central Arkansas was 2-16 in league games, 2-27 overall. This year looks as if it will be similar for both of them.

Mullin has been given a pass for this year. He inherited a really bad situation. The bar is set pretty low this year. Any win like Syracuse is a real bonus. Has to be able to recruit himself out of this black hole. Already signed #1 junior in NYC, Shamorie Ponds. He is the right guy for them. Give him another year and you'll see a real difference.

Wait, what he inherited is so bad you can't beat 2 really bad teams. Seriously. They have reasonable players, enough to beat Syracuse, but lose to two really bad teams.

I don't really understand what was so bad that he inherited.

Mullin didn't inherit a bad situation, St. Johns did when they hired a head coach with zero coaching experience.

On a related note of other things this board beats into the ground:

Lair folk hero TJ McConnell is out of a starting job. Color me shocked.

When I read your post last night I didn't know if I was drunk or tired or what, but I didn't realize what you posted. Incarnate Word sounds like one of those Charter Schools in Philly.

RJ and Scruffy, here's the situation Mullin inherited. You decide if it was good or bad:

*4 returning players, the best of which, Chris Obekpa, transfers
*Remaining 3 players in total averaged 4 points in 2015

Sounds like the cupboard was bare

*late in the recruiting season, he brings in 7 freshman
*best of which, Marcus Lovett, who we also recruited, is declared ineligible
*second best, Kassoum Yakwe, another Our Savior player, was ineligible just like Diallo at Kansas until about a week ago. Yes, we also recruited Yakwe
*no point guard on the roster so they have a freshman Italian import, Frederico Mussini, a shooting guard trying to play point
*12 total players with Yakwe now eligible with zero experience

So what do you think, good or bad situation??

As the season goes on I think we will see that this year's incarnation of Incarnate Word is not as good as last year's. I see Our Lady of the Lake is also in San Antonio, so maybe it's something of a rivalry game, but geez they are an NAIA school.

Still, it's not that they are losing. They are getting blown out by D2 and new D1 teams. That is just a rough start. Nowhere to go but up I guess.

I'll agree, that's not a great situation. My apologies. Like Kiwi said, it's not just that he's losing, he's losing to BAD teams. I don't think someone with no coaching experience is the one to put out that dumpster fire.

St Johns actually a home dog at some spots against New Jersey Tech tomorrow.

St. John's is awful. It'll be hard for a team to end up with a worse loss than this in 2015-16.

There was a picture tweeted out of him just standing outside the huddle, scratching his head watching and assistant coach draw up a play.

That's fine, but then don't surround him with guys like Slice and Abdelmassih who are also recruiters-only.

St. John's is a TOTAL train wreck. I would like to at least see Durand show something, but he's part of the reason they're playing so bad. He is/should be better than he's showing.
A previous poster said he was 2-11 from the field. Unbelievable! Especially against a team of this caliber. Also the few minutes I watched gave me a glimpse of his invisible defense.
