if you can't recruit ready-made starters, then u gotta recruit players that can develop

It was silly when Pitt claimed to have "cause" to fire Stallings for yelling the truth at a Louisville fan. It was hardly necessary because his abysmal recruiting was "cause" enough. Giving a scholarship to Chukwuka, in itself, is grounds for immediate discharge.(Try to imagine watching him and deciding, "This is a guy I've got to have.")

In his first 2 years, Dambrot has given scholarships to 2 players who rec'd no other D-1 offers--Eric Williams and Sincere Carry. Both are really good with high ceilings. They're out there. JD had good luck developing players--Gray, McGhee, Wannmaker, J Brown etc.

By contrast, Stallings left Pitt with a gaggle who either couldn't play--Peace, Chukwuka, Samson --or perhaps wouldn't play--Shamiel. Only Davis and Brown even potentially have any upside and neither has a particularly high ceiling. W-F is OK but Ellison is just awful. This is his 2nd year here and he simply can't play. No upside. He left St. J's for a reason.

Each of the 4 players Capel brought in is far superior to any that Stallings left behind.
Pitt will suffer for this for years.
