of the Coach K and Williams like regimes....I look at Chris Collins at Northwestern and would love to have him at Pitt.

Chris Colllins is not a possibility. Most of the assistants from Kentucky, Duke, and MSU have been failures.

Chris Collins is 10 years younger than Eric Musselman and took the worst P5 program to the NCAA Tournament.

If we are already to the point of saying “don’t even worry about Collins, go for these guys”, then what is the point of Pitt even trying?

If we are striving for Eric Musselman because Chris Collins coming off a crap year is unattainable or perceived as not good enough, then this job is as horrible as everybody says it is.

Collins is better than any mid-major coach, and only Hurley would be comparable (and he sounds perfectly happy at URI until somewhere big opens up).

Musselman, Hurley, Ottenburger, John Becker, or Dan Mueller have built programs with sustained success. Would rather go that route. Not sexy hires, except Hurley, but neither was Howland.
Dan Muller spent 16 seasons with Stallings. I doubt that hire would go over well.

Wasn't KS a Roy Williams protege? I would immediately not consider anyone who coaches the same style as UNC plays because Pitt will never have UNC's talent and thus will never be competitive using that style. What's needed is someone who will emphasize rebounding and defense and not attempt to force "up-tempo" (i.e, won't run except off of defensive stops).

This is exactly what I would like. I would have no problem going back to the style Howland brought. I think the defense/rebounding 1st coaching could bring Pitt back a little quicker. Remember the talent that was here initially? The only way Pitt could hope to compete with Duke, North Carolina etc is a slower offense and play tough as nails defense

I'm with you on this. We need a coach that teaches defense and rebounding first, last and in between. Tell the loudmouths that want a bunch of scoring to STFU so we can get back to being a team that at least has a chance to win every game we play, like it used to be.

I've brought it up before. I think it would be foolish to not at least reach out and see how his back is holding up but idk with his health if he ever returns to coaching.

Ah...didn’t know he was having back problems.

OSU obviously didn't talk much about it, but Matta mentioned not being able to walk at times. The fact that they made it seem like they wanted him out though, I think it's worth seeing if he he's healthy enough to return. Personally I think if he were that he'd be a great candidate.

Chris Collins just signed a pretty monster contract extension. He’s fairly untouchable.

Collins extension is through 2025 at $3 million a year. That could be something like an eight figure buyout plus another $6 million or so for Stallings plus over $3 million in salary per year just to avoid a paycut. He's a heck of a coach it looks like but the money is the issue there, it could be something in the $35-$40 million range to buy them both out then sign Collins to a 5 year deal.

Also weird to say he's "better than any mid-major coach". Every single one? Marshall? Mack? Randy Bennett? Musselman? Few? or did you just means the ones we'd actually have a shot at getting?

Yeah should have clarified, I meant the more attainable ones, the ones we are actually mentioning this time around.

So below Marshall, Mack and Few. I probably would have preferred him to Archie as well, who was also unattainable, just for reference.

FWIW, our friend Gottleib said he thinks Pitt may need to overpay for somebody good and may need to pay $5MM a year for coach+staff plus buyouts on both ends in order to attract an upgrade.

So, let’s hope Lyke has an ace up her sleeves or boosters are willing to pitch in big money for somebody less than Sean Miller.

Yeah it makes sense, we're going to be in a weak bargaining position and have our own buyout to deal with as well. I just worry Collins would be a hole too deep to really consider.

He might be, I’m curious when Pitt reaches the point of “what’s another $5MM when we’re already this deep into guaranteed payments?”.

If they’re insistent on trying to get an actual upgrade and not a similar level of candidate but with a different profile I’d think they might be willing to incur some serious expenses.

I just hope it’s not contingent on Sean Miller or bust.

Considering the relative size of subsidies to the athletic program and the fact it's a new leadership team, they have the unenviable job of both needing to the hire right and probably not being green-lit to spend as much as we'd want. Stallings was the chance to do a bigger money hire as Dixon was getting bought out and we blew it (fwiw though I was always pro Dixon, I was in the give Stallings a chance camp and thought his Vanderbilt resume was decent. I just don't know enough to say how many better candidates Barnes skipped over because of his flawed process.)

Agreed on Miller.
