Standing during the game

In a perfect world, I'd love for everyone to stand and get loud during the entire game. It was like that at Iowa when we went in 2011. Stood the entire time.

But if your section is not standing, then you have to be curtious to others around you.

If I take my kids, I sit in my seat. If I don't have them and I want to stand for long periods of time I go to the rotundas and stand there. We are all human beings in a society and it is only common courtesy to do the things you want to do, but not at the expense of others. There are seats at the stadium for a reason, to sit. If I want to stand, I go to areas that are designated for standing.

I hate that attitude that "you're not a real fan if you don't stand, be loud, and make an ass of yourself." No, a real fan spends money and supports his team.

We really need to just start a codger section. Put it near an exit so they can either leave early to beat traffic or have easy access for an ambulance. Have the nearest snack bar be stocked with hot coffee (even on 80 degree days), green Jello, and vanilla wafers. Maybe it could be sponsored by KDKA Radio.
Just so you know I reported this post as being incredibly discriminatory to the elderly. I hope the mods take action.

Get a grip!
I think his post is right on the money. This season we switched sections to be with a younger group ( fyi we're a young 65 yr old couple) because our section was much like that.
They come late, sit on their hands the whole game, sneer at others who cheer or stand and they leave early.
PITT tickets are so cheap its a good way to pass 4 or 5 hours on a Sat and most have little interest in the program.

I think we have a subculture of people who come to Pitt games because they can't or won't afford Steelers tickets and its a cheaper way to go to see Heinz Field and take in a football game. They get to walk around and see the Steelers Great Hall, shop at the team shop, blah blah blah, for about a fourth of the price.

You should try the men's room stalls during the game! You can do all of that there!
Plus they announce the game there as well! Perfect place for you!
No, I paid for my ticket, and I'll watch the way I WANT TO WATCH. I'll stand when I have too, but I never yell, just don't want to. And won't.

This - If you want to sit and be quiet, watch at home. Im not saying that fans should be standing the entire time, but some of our fans act like they are at the movies instead of a football game.
So what, there's no mandatory requirement to stand or "make noise". I just don't do it, so what?

The reason PITT fans sit is because most are to lazy to stand and cheer.
A lot of PITT fans object to others standing and cheering. When you go to other stadiums the fans stand/yell/ and scream for most of the game.We moved our seats from a section where people would get angry if we jumped up and started to cheer for PITT. They all sat on their hands and hardly ever made a sound the whole game except to tell us to sit down.
We now sit in a section recommended by friends where the people actually have a pulse!
Similar fan behavior in the Petersen Non Event Center. Fans get angry when you stand and cheer for stuff. Go to a Duke or UNC bball game most fans don't sit down the whole game.
UNC folks didn't stand Saturday

This is why the world is in the shape that it is. People always thinking they are right and everyone else is wrong, that THEIR way is the only way. There is no set way or rules to watching a game. There are different people who watch and like football and other sports for many different reasons. I coached football for many years and I played for many years and that is how I watch games, as a coach. Some people have never played and have always been fans, so they watch as fans. There are many different personalities and experiences with the sport and life for that matter that determine what type of fan you are and how you watch the game.

The irony is most of you who bash fans who don't make noise are the same ones that call PSU fans a cult and a bunch of followers. If a Penn State fan is the model of what a fan should be, then I am proud to say I am not a true fan.

I had just two Penn State fans next to me in a sea of Pitt fans. Both of them would do that "AAAHHHH" sound, like anyone could even hear them. They just looked and sounded dumb!

I don't mind standing, but I don't want to yell. I've been to soccer games and there are people who wave flags, lead cheers or beat drums the whole game, and I wonder, why the hell go? You can't pay attention well doing that "stuff".

I for one love the University. Played football here and have been a season ticket holder since graduation.

I will stand for certain occasions during the game and will yell, as witnessed by my lack of voice the week after Ped State.

However if you stand in front of me the whole game I will ask you nicely the first time and even the second and if that doesn't work I will ask the ushers to get involved. THERE IS NO REASON to stand the whole game

Agree! There are times during the game in which to stand, but if I want to stand the entire game there are places to do so and they are not in front of other fans. Its like people who bring umbrellas and open them when it rains, there are places you can go so you don't get wet, no reason to open them so the person behind you can't see.

I don't think anyone is avocating standing the whole game. I believe we're talking about the people who never stand, never cheer, and get mad a people who occasional stand, dance, or cheer when its appropriate! Believe me we have lots of fans like that!
As CorsonsRevenge mentioned lots of PITT fans attend the game and act like its a movie! Its not its actually a football game! Have fun!

Ps
One of my examples was at the PSU game when the announcer put on a great dance song during a commercial and said " PITT fans get on your feet" and hardly anyone stood up. Our section did and we danced for the commercial timeout. A Nitter couple across the aisle from us said whats wrong with the rest of the PITT fans they just sat there. And they did!
I'll give the Nitter fans credit they have a lot for fire than we do. Thankfully we won the game!

IF you want to stand go to the Rotunda's. Standing at a football game has notihing to do with having fun. I sit in the club, I personally do not spend that kind of money to have people stand in front of me.

You're one of the PITT fan mopes and that's why our fanbase looks pathetic on TV or in person as the Nitter fan mentioned.
Watch a Clemon or FSU game and tell me how many people sit on their hands. Most Stand Alot!
But thanks for playing football for PITT!

No I am not... actually quite the contrary... What makes us look bad is our recent coaching changes and the fact that we lay an egg on almost every Nationally telivised game. Standing has nothing to do with it. I just will not let someone stand in front of me.... It has NOTHING to do with being a fan or a "Mope"

At the Nitter game they tried something new that went over like a lead balloon.
During a commercial the announcer put on some dance music and said " everyone get on your feet."

If you think that was new one can only surmise that you've never been to a Pitt football game before, since they do that at literally every game. Every basketball game too, for that matter.

I was referring to UNC and Duke basketball games compared to the PITT fans in the Petersen Non Events Center. Go back and read my post!
Reading comprehension is a critical skill or success!
UNC fans nor duke fans stand during basketball games.
The students at Duke, yes. Because they literally don't have seats ...they stand on risers .
The fans, no..they sit.

As someone who has literally attended dozens of games at both venues.

Is there anyone outside of the student section that stands the entire game inside the stadium besides the people that work at Heinz?

At the super bowl in Detroit the steeler fans had a number of sitter vs stander fights. I can tell you first hand, it can gets testy. There's times to stand and times to sit-in my opinion.

There is a reason that stadiums have seats. It is to sit in them. I understand that everyone has the right to stand and cheer during certain plays during games, but to stand the entire game is inappropriate. If you want to stand the entire game then go to the standing areas and not the seating areas. Quite simple.

So there are 65,000 "Seats" in the stadium but you want fans that have observable enthusiasm to go to one of two Rotunda? Do you subscribe to the thought that players win games? If not, remain seated. If you've seen the light I'm sure you'd agree that 17 year old kids might be impressed by 60k standing up and having a great time. I think they might be less than enthused at the idea of playing to a golf gallery at a Pitt home game.

I agree with cashbin99. We're not Texas A&M...we're not the "12th man" - standing and waiting to go into the game if needed. (It's a great tradition, but it's not a Pitt tradition.)[/QUOTE]

Who was Texas A&M 10-15 years ago? Basically they were a Pitt level or below program.

Combine that fan base with some solid coaching with commitment from the University and now they recruit top 20.

Are we still going to be a collective snooze on Gameday if Duzz recruits to that level?

My point here is simple. Wake Up! The fans are a major problem. The only way to change is to choose to do it. If the fans give more (not just money) over time they'll get more.

Lair members are big time fans and it's a good place to start.

Been to every game for a long time. We even drive 300+ miles and pay for hotels etc.
Unlike you who probably just drives down the road and still doesn't come to every game!
This was a try at something new with different music!
One of the Heinz security guys in our section knows the booth people and mentioned it was something new and didn't go over well. Except for the kids very few fans participated. In other words most of the fans sat on their fat as-es.
As I said a Nitter couple across from us said " whats wrong with your fanbase no one got up."
????????

We were at that level in 2003 and people still sat on their hands at the Virginia Tech game. It really wasn't until the fourth quarter that people started to get into it. The only game I really saw this fan base act like fans and not like the gallery at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic was the Big East Championship game in 2009 when they quite frankly tried willing this team to victory.

My wife is 57 years old .A great athlete who played hoops at Pitt . She works 30 hours a week at Kohls. She is on her feet all day. She gets up when it is an exciting play or crucial down. She would not stand a whole game and should not be expected to. if one of you guys pulled that stunt I would make sure you were escorted out of the park by our security. I spend a helluva lot for Panther Club ,in excess of $3500 a year so my voice counts.

If they are playing because of the fans in the stadium, they are playing for the wrong reason. I played and coached and not at one time did I care who was in the stands. I cared about doing my job and winning the game. I don't recall one time where I heard the fans cheering.

Actually I've been to every game Pitt has ever played at Heinz Field. In the 35 seasons since I was a freshman at Pitt I can still count the number of Pitt home games I've missed on the fingers of one hand, and I don't even need all five. So yeah, I've been there often enough to tell you that anyone who thinks that the PA guy telling fans to get on their feet and dance during a commercial break at either a football or basketball game is something new either doesn't pay attention or is just simply full of it.

Sit Down. Stand Up.

I sit in 132 with my wife and our two small children. We sit there for reasons dear to me. My wife would much prefer the club but she is a saint and she soldiers on in 132 to keep me smiling.

132 is next to the band which IS college football. 132 is one section removed (by the aforementioned Pitt Marching Band) from The Panther Pitt. The Panther Pitt IS college football.

132 SHOULD be most like college football at Heinz Field. But Like the rest of Heinz Field section 132 falls well short of the college football atmosphere.

Forget what isn't collegiate about Heinz, we are going to be there for a while. We can't presently change the stadium. But if we introspect we can change ourselves.

This conversation is about standing. The answer is simple. If you're physically able, you should stand; even if you don't feel like it. Why? Atmosphere. Why? The visiting team. Why? Recruits and their families. Why? YOUR PITT PANTHERS.

Pitt fans need to understand that they owe the players, coaches and the university a little more. We are all stakeholders in the success of the program. We all play a role on Saturday.

I know it might seem inconsequential but our fan base is weak. We are quiet and docile in most victories and utterly defeated in defeat. Our fan base is Paul Chryst. (I loved Chryst and wish him the best at UW) We were not going to win the way we know we could with Paul Chryst.

We just might realize that winning potential with Pat Narduzzi. Pat Narduzzi is Pittsburgh. He is loud. He is opinionated, tough, confident, brash. Our fans on Saturday should be the same.

I've seen games at Notre Dame Stadium. (2002 & 2010)
I was at Kinnick Stadium for an ACC Day collapse from Todd and the Gang.
I suffered through many a mid-90s Pitt shellacking visiting my older brother at Pitt Stadium.
And I saw one game at Beaver Stadium in 1989.

Atmosphere is many things but at the heart of atmosphere is the people. "We Aren't, Penn State" but with that said we Pitt fans could learn something from a great many fan bases around the country. Who cares how many we are if we are passionate. Not just passionate whiners and mopers but passionate 12th Pitt Men and Pitt Women.

Stand Up! Hoot! Holler! Ring your keys and bang your seat! Alleghenee Genac Genac Genac!

Pitt is It.
I bet Pat Narduzzi would stand.
We owe it to our coach and certainly to our team to do the same.

* and a question to the board. Why do we come alive on third down. Wouldn't it be most effective to be vivacious for every down and every distance on defense. The fans had moments vs. PSU but we can be better.

I certainly agree with your point about making noise and attempting to create the best possible atmosphere for the players to play. That said, you certainly do not have to stand to make noise and cheer. Maybe on an incredibly important defensive play or series, standing is fine. But standing up the entire game--is plain foolish and often times rude. If the people in your section all stand--go for it. But plenty of people [old folks, women, children, disabled, etc.] attend games and are not able to stand. Standing in front of these people is plain rude and inappropriate. So use some judgment, and by all means, make noise when it is helpful to the Panthers. Hail to Pitt!

Look, if you want to dance, mug for the camera, kiss the guy beside you...go for it. But to belittle people that are not interested in that--is down right stupid. Unless I missed it, dancing is not part of football. I have no issues with people that want to do this kind of silliness during stops in play or timeouts, but you better not be dancing in front of me when a play is going on! Hail to Pitt!

Stand and cheer on your defense on third down - be as disruptive to the opponent's offense as possible on that critical down.

Stand and cheer to greet your team as they enter the stadium.

Give a standing ovation to your team when they make a great play.

Sit at every other time, unless the person in front of you is standing, and you need to stand to see the field of play.

If you notice that you are standing and everyone around you is sitting (especially those behind you), consider sitting out of courtesy to those behind you, unless one of the situations previously mentioned applies.

This is why we need to have separate sections where standing at will is encouraged and other sections where fans can expect to sit the entire game.

It doesn't make you less of a fan for sitting and watching. It also is not "silly" to stand and yell while trying to make the atmosphere challenging for the visiting team.

Hail to Pitt!

Dave

They used to have those at most European soccer venues, until they were done away with because of the problems they created.
