Steelers/UPMC announce 15 year naming agreement, and will expand the practice facilities and add facility upgrades.

Wonder how this will affect Pitt's side of the building.

Regardless, good deal and if the fields and outdoor facilities are expanded/upgraded, that is only good for Pitt.

Looks like the Steelers are physcially expanding their side with an addition seen in the photo below. Obviously Pitt's side of the facility should follow, and this should be the next upgrade to the facility.

well this is good news. Paco, using the wonderful Google earth website, doesn't look like there is any room to increase for fields.. Big ol prudential building in the way.. doesn't look like much the other way either. But I am sure some nice interior upgrades would be welcomed..

Seems most of the upgrade/expansion will be done to the weight room. Do the Steelers/Pitt share this?

Also said some outside upgrades which will benefit both.

No, Pitt has its own weight room.

Look at the image, the Steelers are basically expanding the building out over the setback (where the trees are on Pitt's side).

It's a $10 million, 5K square foot expansion.

There is plenty of room to expand the interior. The exterior is a different story, those fields are basically what the're going to be. However, they can always cut into parking and do some other things too if they need to expand weight rooms or add lounges and what not.

Sometime between now and the end of this extension, the Steelers will begin the narrative that Heinz Field is an archaic dump that needs to be replaced. On our dimes, naturally. Tune that Google Earth to open parcels in Washington County.

Based on the case of the Georgia Dome, the "useful" life of a stadium grows shorter with each generation. Of course the Atlanta situation is somewhat unique in that the Falcons, the Southeastern Conference and bowl interests combined to extract a shiny new palace out of the State of Georgia. But don't be surprised when the TV crews follow a caulk-gun-wielding, hardhatted Steeler exec around the stadium as he spackles craters on the concourses.

Heinz is halfway to the age when Three Rivers bit the dust.

Rooneys aren't leaving the North side.. Stop this Washington county/cranberry nonsense. It won't happen.. North shore is developing something every single day.. Millions being invested in this, 12 floor garages going up next year where gold 1a is now. This is not happening because of Starkist or BigHeart Pet brands.

This. The crap that they are moving in the next decade or two to Washington county is absolute garbage IMO.

Heinz vs 3 Rivers isn't even a comparison. And the development around the stadium is a great investment for the owners as well.

One day they will have to replace Heinz, but it won't be for a LONG time IMO.

3 Rivers (amongst other stadiums of its time) has such a short life span because it was a multi-sport facility. I think you will see much longer tenures in all of the stadiums built from the late 90s onward for the simple fact that they were built as football-specific stadiums. I'm sure Heinz will go through major upgrades every decade or so but I seriously doubt the Steelers move within the next 30 years.

And PNC Park may still be around 100 years from now.

It's a weird choice from a design/branding perspective. You always want to avoid redundancy as each logo dilutes the other. I suspect they'll get that corrected beforehand.

they made a deal with pitt. They gave us the script under the agreement that they can add another steeler logo. Here is a pic of it prior to script.

They have a football only facility that they have been constantly upgrading over the years. They have development that they control and gain revenues from being built all around the stadium.

I guess the question though is what is the definition of sooner for you?

If it's 5-10-15 years, I think you are nuts.

If it's 25-30-35, then maybe.

Hmmnnn, Iowa's Hayden Frye comes to the Steelers and asked to copy the Uniforms and Art Rooney says great idea and the Steelers will pay for them!!! Why because it is good for the Steeler's Branding and Iowa looking like the Steelers helps them too! Sports Illustrated quoted Hayden later after doing just that, "Damn, We Look Just Like The Pittsburgh Steelers.....Until We Snap The Ball!"

Pitt Script right across from the Steeler's Logo is another example of associating with a Winner! It is good for the Pitt Football just like it is for Iowa wearing the Uniforms!

By the way, anyone know what the Yellow, Orange, and Blue Diamonds stand for on the Steel Logo used as the Steeler's Logo?
The Elements that make with yellow for coal, orange for iron ore, and blue for scrap steel.
History Of The Steel & Steeler's Logo!

I knew that. I used to ride a bus with a kid who was a Steelers fanatic ( subsequently he became a corrupt cop and is in jail for theft and drug possession, damn yinzer) and our bus driver pointed that out to him.

Pitt and the Steelers Association is not a bad thing! Art Rooney II is a Pitt Graduate!

It did not hurt when Coach Pat Narduzi was seen in a Photo with the Steeler's Running Back Bell watching Miles Sanders on the Sidelines at the High School Game?

When Phil Bennet a Pitt Assistant coach went over to the Steelers on Draft Day and talked about what he saw at SMU Practice Fields with Deion Sanders teaching Antonio Brown and Emanuele Sanders, that helped the Steelers too!

They way I see the Steelers behind expanding UPMC Practice Facilities.....they will take it over and make it their own, and Pitt may be making plans to build a New Stadium in Oakland with their practice Facilities and shared by CMU & Duquesne and High School Playoff Games!

Just a Hunch!

No way the Rooney's wait 25 years or more to start the new stadium conversation. Ten seems like a long time. They'll stay put on the North Side but they'll want another stadium sooner rather than later. Even they know the place is marginal at best.

Millions of dollars were just invested in stadium upgrades including a new video board, new luxury seating, new club seating, new general seating, etc. With the development around the stadium, they have zero incentive to build a new building, especially with all of the attendance issues the NFL has.

The 49ers moved 50 miles away for a good stadium deal. The Braves are moving out to the Burbs. The Cowboys play 30 miles from Dallas. Its not impossible.

Not impossible, but not probable either.

If the Steelers ever get a new stadium, it will be on the north side. The Rooneys have bought up too much land and developed too much around the area to ever leave that area. The T stops, the restaurants, the casino, the hotels, the bars. The Rooneys *LOVE* the location and won't move.

They might make major renovations to Heinz or even build a new stadium... .but they aren't moving to Washington county or Cranberry.

And if you haven't noticed... the Rooneys don't behave like Jerry Jones...

Dan Rooney doesn't behave like Jerry jones. The reality is no one knows what Art Jr will do when he's fully in charge. I wouldn't say never about anything involving the amount of $$ involved. If another county coughs up big bucks for a new facility I'm sure things could change

I would say the "grumblings" about Heinz from the Rooneys start in about 10 years. 15 years from now, they start threatening to move to Wash or Butler. In 20 years, a new 90,000 seat stadium is built on the North Side. Maybe we can rent half of it.

While the thought of the Steelers leaving the confluence seems far-fetched, SMF gives examples of why it COULD happen. The ATL Braves could not get a new stadium in Atlanta; the city and state were tapped out over the Georgia Dome replacement. So they moved to where their fan base is concentrated in upscale Gwinnett County.

At the very least, the prospects of shifting one county in either direction gives the Steelers something that team owners love. Leverage.

To have leverage, I think either Butler or Washington counties would have to have a significantly larger tax base. Both have a population of ~ 200K (Allegheny has 1.2 mil), which seems rather small given that they will probably have to foot a good chunk of any stadium bill.

To compare, Gwinnett Co. has close to a million people, Santa Clara Co. has ~ 1.8 mil. Our closest comparable here is still much smaller (Westmoreland with 360K).
