Steelers/UPMC announce 15 year extension

The 49ers moved 50 miles away for a good stadium deal. The Braves are moving out to the Burbs. The Cowboys play 30 miles from Dallas. Its not impossible.

No one said it's impossible. I don't see it happening in Pittsburgh though. It's just funny when something happens somewhere else it means it will happen everywhere.

Actually people did post that it's impossible, read the at the beginning, and the examples simply state that it has happened other places so it could happen here.

I just reread and I don't see one person saying it's impossible. I see people saying they don't think it's likely, at least for a long time, and that anything within the next 10-20 years is stupid, which I agree with, but no one said it is impossible.

Heard a rumor from a good source UPMC has been sniffing around Panther Hollow

One can only dream
I read somewhere, possible development or transportation lines from Oakland to new development at the Hazelwood sites, going thru Panther Hollow. Some medical research facilities are slated for this development on the river and they want easy accessibility from this site to Oakland facilities.. A relationship with Uber, unmanned transportation. Sounded pretty far fetched, Jetson's-like to me but I still holding onto my VHS tapes so maybe it's me that needs to get with the times..

Are you insinuating that UPMC could build a new campus outside of Oakland (somewhere along the river), leaving their land in Oakland open to Pitt development? I tend to think this scenario, however far-fetched, is probably a more likely scenario than Pitt gobbling up blocks of South Oakland.

I can't really see UPMC building in Panther Hollow itself, given how difficult it would be to access the site. That is, unless they are resurrecting the 60s plan to fill in the hollow with the "vertical skyscraper" that Pitt had proposed.

I keep waiting for all this Hazelwood development to start but it doesn't seem like too much is going on there right now.

Going to be a road from Oakland to Hazelwood area. The city owns the land and this would absolutely be an easy way to get from Oakland to the new development in Hazelwood.

They should make it a rail line instead or in addition to, but Peduto seems to believe that Pittsburgh is going to be the hub for producing self driving cars and from what I have read he wants this to showcase the technology, without realizing that the technology will just be integrated into cars instead of being produced separately in Pittsburgh.

In the end, it will be another road that increases the number of cars in the city overall.

I keep hoping this somehow becomes a much more Pitt-centric development. Sure, its a brownfield site and will take big bucks to clean, but this is a once in a century chance to add many many acres to our campus. And the connection via Panther Hollow seems like it would be (relatively) easy.

And by Pitt-centric, I don't mean tech development or collaboration with CMU. I mean the relocation of entire schools, student housing, etc...

think it's going to start within a year.. Post gazette had an article on it.. This land was bought in '02, think by RIDC.. Been sitting on it for awhile..

RIDC envisions turning an abandon LTV mill into a marketplace and perhaps a film sound stage. The rest of the site would be a mix of residential, offices and business sites, including an eco-tech park, which would house clean energy firms.

I envision another replica of southside works and the waterfront. Same typical commercial cookie cutter companies surrounded by expensive condos that will be over-valued by mythical studies stating that young professional adults want to own a 250,000 dollar condo in Hazelwood.. But hey, the view of the river will be nice..

If done correctly, this could be part of a connection between downtown and Oakland. Run a light rail line from downtown to Hazelwood (via 2nd Ave) and either have a transfer at Hazelwood or have the entire line turn and run up Panther Hollow. Put a station at the bottom of the hollow behind the Frick building with escalators up the hillside to the Schenley Plaza area.

Running some driverless cars/trams along this route seems awfully shortsighted to me.

I agree that there are opportunities for rail lines in this part of the City. The problem is that no politicians have the cajones to publically support such an endeavor.

No, you are right. Silly me, I thought Peduto might be a little different but so far he has been pretty much more of the same.

If you guys are interested, read the article below, it is very recent.. Grand plans for sure.. And no, there is no mention of our great university being involved..

It seems like the ball was dropped somewhere. This property sat vacant for decades and was there for the taking. It looks like it will become another generic mixed-use development that will probably benefit the community less than a campus expansion would.

Taken from the article, this master plan sounds like complete garbage, similar in scope to the Waterfront (less all of the big box stuff on the western side):

Riverview (closest to the Hot Metal Bridge), primarily office and residential;
Roundhouse, a historic structure and place where CMU conducted autonomous vehicle tests, earmarked as a sustainable-type technology center and green space;
Mill Plaza North and South, industrial and commercial development of Mill 19 that honors and preserves the authentic integrity of the structure; and
Hazelwood Flats, residential and mixed-use that will connect with Hazelwood and include an “affordable component.”

I agree, waterfront, 3.0. oh well, anything is better than what has been there the last 3 decades.. Hazelwood is as bad as it gets though, I get sad just driving thru that area.. Can't for the life of me see anyone buying a condo there though.. Riverfront office building is fine, throw in a nice little outside area with a bike trail, fine. I remember UPMC planning on a big research facility there years ago but think that got scratched.. Some kind of lab where they experiment with DNA, clone new species, 1/2 human 1/2 raccoon kind of lab.

I am ok if this isn't the great handout to the community as promised.. Sick of these garbage communities expecting financial windfalls. Upper hill district wanted millions from land of CIvic Arena, why? You guys cant take care of your own land, why should the city give you more? You are just going to trash it.. Same thing with Hazelwood. Cut your freakin lawn first, prove to us you can live like human beings instead of animals then we'll talk about building you something. Take this park and planned parenthood and be thankful for that..

Something IS better than nothing, I suppose. It would be nice to see some density to some of these developments, as opposed to plans that would be perfectly suited for Cranberry or Robinson (kind of like what the Rooneys did to the north shore).

great article, answers a lot of questions.. What jumps out at me is the "branding" of the inside facility. Think maybe some cool Pitt Script logos on the walls over the UPMC logos. Just a guess..Also, shared lobby area and pitt players having access to café without going inside.. This all adds up to increased shared space with NFL franchise, not a bad thing in the least. Not earth shattering but still cool that they are pushing the script thru the facility.. Here is a pic of what I am talking about with the upmc logos. This could be an old pic though..

I'll give Dan Rooney a call to see if those changes are allowed.

No need, Dan doesn't call shots anymore, art does. And him and Barnes already met and are both onboard and moving forward.. Save your call to dan If we need any empty, meaningless, ambassador gestures with Ireland..

Look at Arrowhead in KC. It opened August 12, 1972.

3 Rivers (amongst other stadiums of its time) has such a short life span because it was a multi-sport facility. I think you will see much longer tenures in all of the stadiums built from the late 90s onward for the simple fact that they were built as football-specific stadiums. I'm sure Heinz will go through major upgrades every decade or so but I seriously doubt the Steelers move within the next 30 years.

And PNC Park may still be around 100 years from now.

Still recognized as one of the best in the NFL. Then you have Lambeau Field, Soldier Field. Miami is getting a major renovation.

It's all in the design. Arrowhead (along with Kauffman Stadium next door) were built with a unique style that still looks good today. Arrowhead was also built to hold in the noise, which certainly adds to its charm. Soldier Field was largely ruined with the "spaceship" they built on top of it, but any renovation of Soldier was going to be difficult given the shallow pitch of it's lower bowl. I think Lambeau is the last remaining of the "classic" stadiums?

a follow up from yesterday, you guys have missed the mark already....think 52,000 seats, trams from campus, ....nevermind I've said too much already

Hmmnnn, Iowa's Hayden Frye comes to the Steelers and asked to copy the Uniforms and Art Rooney says great idea and the Steelers will pay for them!!! Why because it is good for the Steeler's Branding and Iowa looking like the Steelers helps them too! Sports Illustrated quoted Hayden later after doing just that, "Damn, We Look Just Like The Pittsburgh Steelers.....Until We Snap The Ball!"

Pitt Script right across from the Steeler's Logo is another example of associating with a Winner! It is good for the Pitt Football just like it is for Iowa wearing the Uniforms!

By the way, anyone know what the Yellow, Orange, and Blue Diamonds stand for on the Steel Logo used as the Steeler's Logo?
The Elements that make with yellow for coal, orange for iron ore, and blue for scrap steel.

As usual we share to learn on the Lair!
Sorry but it's red not orange. It's called a hypocycloid. Each color stands as the chemical elements to make Steel.Red for the fire, blue for water and yellow for air.I might be a little off on this but I'm close.

damn, I was just about to call you out on your ignorance, correcting you to tell you there is no orange.. But you are right. What happened to the orange then cause it's red now..

In fact, the three four-pointed starlike figures within the circle, called hypocycloids for their geometric origin, made it to the NFL in 1962, when Rooney adopted the Steelmark for his football team. The Steelers logo is based on the Steelmark logo belonging to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The Steelmark was originally created for United States Steel Corporation to promote the attributes of steel: yellow lightens your work; orange brightens your leisure; and blue widens your world. The logo's meaning was later amended to represent the three materials used to produce steel: yellow for coal; orange for iron ore; and blue for steel scrap.
