Surreal how the bottom has fallen out this year

In retrospect, a lot of things went right in 2021 and it appears that season was a lot of smoke and mirrors. That team now looks like one of the weakest, luckiest P5 conference championship runs in history. Maybe that is the healthiest perspective.

Frustrating thing about this season is:

Backup QBs beat us at WVU, Wake, and TE running wildcat. Should’ve been 3 more wins. Add on Cincy sucks and played the game of their season.

With some semblance of offense, we could’ve flipped this script and still been playing meaningful football in November.

The fool not just once but multiple times denounced having a good offense.

He’s had exactly two above average (but not exemplary) seasons in nine years.

Those two lone good seasons were when he had good offenses.

After the first one… He didn’t exactly run Canada out of town, but he demonstrably hired a complete opposite (aka, a total dud) when he replaced Canada.

Then after the other… he DID totally run Whipple out of town, then demonstrably hired ANOTHER complete opposite dud to replace him.

He totally deserves the terrible fortune he’s having. He 100% is making his own grave. The problem is that the rest of us paid the gravedigger. And because of the terrible contract and Pitt’s indifference to winning, we’ll still be digging it for another two years at least

I’m of an age that I started watching Pittfootball in 1984, which was the bottom falling out after a great era. This season feels the same.

That is what is mind boggling to me. His choosing of coordinators, and then the coordinators in ability to properly evaluate and develop players has killed this team, in only two seasons.

I wouldn’t go there. 3 first round draft picks, numerous other NFL caliber players, a Heisman caliber QB, beat Clemson, convincingly won the championship game against a Wake team that did win 11 games. Yeah the conference was a bit down but they still did what they needed to do.

That said - the big problem as many have noted is how Narduzzi handled the pivot in the offensive approach and his failure to take responsibility for that side of the ball. No excuse to bottom out this bad not being all that far removed from what was a legitimately great 2021 season.

Remember the 77-60 win over Syracuse? He was overtly enraged at the end of it. Said it “sickened” him.

I really don’t think it’s outrageous to suggest he actually felt BETTER about this travesty of debacle of a disaster today than he did WINNING that game back then (which seems so, so, so long ago now).

In a nutshell that explains everything that’s wrong with the guy. He’s just not a coach for these times, especially for a program like Pitt that needs to survive by being a little more outrageous and crazy than the programs that have more money and willingness to buy talent. Increasingly we are going to have to win with smoke and mirrors (aka with speed and unconventional offense); yet he HATES HATES HATES that.

He perversely probably LOVED the stat line that Syracuse put up today … 380 yards running, 8 yards passing … even though it was accomplished AGAINST him. Likely stains his shorts fantasizing about games like that.

So we’re doomed before we even take the field.

In my opinion, Narduzzi is an insecure, egotistical head coach. That’s a harsh thing to say, but I can’t come up with a better reason as to why he does the things he does.

Head coaches want to hire better assistant coaches that depart the staff. He ran off the best OC we had in Whipple and hired a guy he felt more “comfortable” with in Cignetti. Cignetti would run the same Big Ten offense while Narduzzi would run the same Big Ten defense.

It’s his way or the highway.

He should thank Whipple and Pickett everyday for the extension he received.

a true football school...committed to winning, would spend the cash to resolve this

Pitt...takes the approach that letting this continue will save $$$.

The stars aligned and Pitt didn't face a ranked opponent till 18th-ranked Wake Forest in the ACCCG. That's how down the ACC was that year.

The thing is I don’t believe anyone even thinks they SHOULD fire him. In many ways he’s great for the program. But they HAVE to enforce dramatic changes upon him, staff and philosophy; maybe he has a contract but they can make his life miserable otherwise and if can’t deal with such conditions he should take a cheap buyout.

And this all has to happen in very short time in order to find the best coordinator and assistants … or worse case a whole new HC and staff. Lyke can’t let him get away with doing nothing because it’s the typical easy Pitt way

That’s the sobering reality. You can’t control who you play, it doesn’t diminish success … you still had to win the games. But we got really, really fortunate that Clemson was merely ok that year, and that FSU utterly stunk (and thus we only had to play pedestrian Wake for the championship). But we didn’t capitalize on the massive good fortune; we allowed Duz to cater to his worst whims regarding the OC, and we didn’t get in front of the headwinds of exponential NIL spending. We were never going to outspend nearly anyone; but we needed to unleash the boosters we do have. Instead there are grumblings that the typical Pitt shackles are put on procuring players. This school never learns
