** Old folks like myself don’t go out for New Year’s Eve anymore. Instead, the Wife, my Son and I planned to make this night our New Year’s dinner celebration plus entertainment. But my Wife’s brutal bout of bronchitis nipped those plans in the bud.

** So she watched this very fun game at home all alone, through her antibiotic laden condition. Walking out the Pete, I was thrilled to call and get her take. “So what did you think?” I asked. “By the end of the game, the Orange looked tired and beaten up,” she said. Even someone who coughed through two thirds of the game was able to gather this truth.

** When was the last time we watched the Panthers beat up an opponent down the stretch? When was the last time we appeared demonstrably tougher than our opponent? Tonight, we got both.

** The Panthers didn’t play very well tonight. Our offensive execution wasn’t nearly as good as we’ve seen this year. We didn’t shoot well.

** The Cuse deserved some credit for this, in that they did some things differently in their zone than we have been used to seeing over the year. Most notably, the Orange pinched together their two guards at the foul line to prevent the Panthers from operating as effectively from that spot as they have so well for most of this millennium.

** The Orange also did an excellent job of keeping the ball away from Mike Young, at least in any place where he could do any kind of damage in the context of the offense.

** All of this led to a tough offensive first half for the Panthers. That is a 30 point first half.

** So how did we turn that into a 42 point second half including 37 points in the last 13 minutes?

** Much of it was done with the aforementioned toughness, which often included offensive rebounding. That was actually the biggest overall difference in this game.

** Some of it was done with Dixon’s second half adjustment to attack the zone from outside of the pinched in guards, instead of from the foul line, and to look for space along the baseline.

** The rest was Jamel Artis.

** I could try to write a whole bunch about Jamel’s performance tonight, but I wouldn’t do him appropriate justice. Let’s just leave it at “brilliant!”

** Still, let’s also give a shout out to some of the other things Jamel did besides passing and scoring, which means defense and rebounding. No one is ever going to nominate Jamel as ACC defensive player of the year. But he’s night and day from last year. And the guy who seemed to almost forget to rebound against GW in the NIT game last year was all over the glass tonight.

** Last year, when a team focused on Mike Young the way the Cuse did tonight, he might have mustered 8 points. Tonight, he managed 15, and he earned each and every one.

** Methinks Sheldon Jeter might be learning how to play defense. There’s no doubt he knows how to finish on the break with serious flair!

** While I’m on a positive vibe, let’s give some other shout outs. First, to Jamie Dixon not only for his second half adjustments, but also giving spot substitutions to Mike Young and Jamel Artis. I wasn’t thrilled that he kept pulling them, but obviously our depth helped to wear down the Cuse.

** Second, to Cameron Johnson. When I first saw Slim at a summer game in Montour, I pictured him hitting one of his deep threes with his long arms over the Cuse Zone. Nice to finally see that come to fruition.

** Third, to the Oakland Zoo! Congrats for doing a great job filling your seats over the break, and bringing plenty of noise and energy.

** For me, the night’s only jeers go to referee Bryan Kersey. I can forgive Bri for a very questionable block call on Mike at the end of the first half. But a good veteran ref (which I though Kersey was) just goes into the tunnel at halftime. He shouldn’t chase down Ontario Lett (who was walking the other way toward his tunnel) to get into an argument. Booooo!

** It’s also tough for me to watch Syracuse and not see Jim Boeheim. Ever since I’ve been watching Pitt hoops – well over 30 years now – Jimmy B has been whining on the sideline.

** But it’s easy to let that go on this fun night. To me, this game clearly demonstrated all the wonderful differences between this year and last. That is, the ability to score points when not shooting well, and the ability to play defense when it is needed most.

** The Cuse aren’t a very good team this year. And they seem to be remarkably bad on the defensive glass. Still, our Panthers probably would have lost this game last year.

** So hopefully, my Wife will go into 2016 starting to feel a little bit better. That is, because I suspect she’s going want several more opportunities to watch the 2015-2016 Panther Hoopers in person.

Great job of dissecting how that zone looked different, and how that gave the normally Syracuse zone killing Panthers fits all night long.

I think a large part of our poor execution on offense can be attributed to James spending a long time on the bench with 2 fouls. Things run so much smoother when he's in the game.

That was something to see, wasn't it? What in the heck was he thinking?

Me thinks Chris Jones and Sheldon Jeter need to take over a lot of Sterling Smith's minutes going forward. I know you brought up the Davidson game where he had a nice 2nd half BUT he has been pretty terrible shooting the ball in most games lately.

Here are his last 5 games so you can be the judge

1)Eastern Washington game - 21 minutes, 1 point, 0-1 shooting, 0-1 from 3 pt land

2)Morehead State game - 23 minutes, 6 points(4 from the FT Line), 1-6 shooting, 0-4 from 3 pt land

3)Davidson game - 28 minutes, 12 points, 4-7 shooting, 4-5 from 3 pt land

4)Western Carolina - 20 minutes, 2 points, 0-6 shooting, 0-2 from 3 pt land

5)Syracuse game - 25 minutes, 3 points, 1-7 shooting, 1-6 from 3 pt land

So to sum it up, Sterling Smith has 24 points in his last 5 games(half of which came in 1 of them) so he is averaging 3 points a game in the other 4. Not good.

Sterling Smith has made 5 of his past 20 3 point shots(of which 4 came in 1 game) so in the other 4 games he has made a single 3 point shot in 15 attempts. Not good.

Wasn't he supposed to be a 3 pt specialist??

All in all, I am not saying to relegate the guy to the bench all the time, but for the time being there are a few other Panthers who are playing much better.

Eh, he was billed as such by some fans, but that is not his fault and was never really truthful. He shot 42% last year against low-major defenses, which is very good, but not "specialist" status, in my opinion. He shot 33% and 38% as a Freshman and Sophomore, respectively. For the sake of comparison, Ashton shot 49% as a junior with a greater volume than Smith had last year. That's a specialist.

FWIW, he is shooting 49% on the year so far this year.

Knowing that Sheldon plays the four and Sterling Smith plays the two, how can Sheldon get Sterling's minutes?

Chris played 26 minutes tonight, and Sterling 25. I suspect Sterling would have played less tonight, had it not been for James' foul trouble. More or less, about 6 of Sterling's minutes tonight came at the point, but not at Chris' expense.

Right. Actually meant to emphasize that Sterling Smith shouldn't be playing 23-28 minutes at this point based on his recent performances.

Syracuse is hard to score on. They have very good players, and they were playing well before their late collapse. The game was competitive. A number of our players did not have great games. Still, according to the box score, Smith had 5 rebounds and 3 assists in his 25 minutes. The shots will start falling. Jones is bringing it, too. He is strong and aggressive. The two are a very nice complementary pair of players at the 2. The coaches are using them well.

He seems to shoot better when the team is running rather than from the set offense. I was hoping to see him drive to the hoop and get some layups and/or foul shots.

The Cuse also seemed to trap a lot in the corners. Have they done that previously? The rebounding was the difference. That is why Dixon does not like playing zone. Seems hard to find a man and box out when the shot goes up.

Game was much closer than I expected. Good to see game won with some defense. Can't take too many games like that or I will have a stroke. Heck, even watching the replay was tense.

1. Maia was a beast on the boards. 8 boards in 11 minutes. Oh Maia ! He was pumped. easy to see why he led the Ivy in boards for 3 years.

2. when did we recruit Magic Johnson ? I missed that. Oh, it was Artis. Man, what a game for the young man.

3. I agree we did not have a great game. we shot the 3 poorly. the phrase, live by the 3, die by the 3 is for a reason. 6/23 won't work vs Duke/UNC/Louisville.

4. James Robinson is having a great year. we are hurting without him. steady floor leader and he played great D on Gbinije (great hangman nameD!). he did not shoot well, but had to take some tough shots.

5. Sterling Smith did not shoot well, but he did play good defense. He has been streaky. either 5/6 or 1/6. However, Smith is more than a shooter. He played very good D and hits the boards. we get a 3 or 4 out of 6 on his shooting against anyone, we will be really tough to beat.

6. Sheldon Jeter has taken some kind of leap, not sure if its the great leap, or something different. I agree DT, his defense is better, much better. no brain farts in a while and he defends the rim ! great block on their freshman stud.

7. Chris Jones is playing well. call it a steady leap forward for him. he and Sterling were on the floor together a few times last night.

8. Our tough shooting, had to give credit to Syracuse. they did read Artis quotes and decided to change the zone for us. it did make it tough on Mike Young, but he was still a beast down the stretch.

9. ok, we know we have a really good team. is it a sweet sixteen or elite 8 ? It is possible. A lot left to prove, need some big wins. need some good shooting nights against top 10 quality teams like UNC, Louisville, Virginia, Duke, Miami.

10. I know it was not a sell out, but the Zoo and the crowd were awesome !

11. bad foul shooting night. only 78%, below our average of 80%.

Thanks, Mr. Obvious. Couldn't stretch this post any more if it were Chris Farley's Spanx.

The rebounding, imposing our will to pull away at the end certainly bodes well and reminds all of us what we used to do. That was fun.

As I posted in my thread. Syracuse has a lot of "parts", it just doesn't always add up and the sum seems not to equal the parts.

I told yinz this team is fun.

Besides the great performances of Artis ,Young and Jeter I paid a lot of attention to Cam Johnson tonight. When he was on the court they were very positive minutes for the Panthers. There's a lot of upside in this kid it's going to be fun watching him develop.

Mo, Pitt plays at home on January 2nd against an OOC opponent. Don't remember the team.

It is Maryland Eastern Shore

They are a team that has been reasonably competitive vs a number of Div 1 opponents (Kansas St, Missouri, Georgetown, etc)--losing in 15-22 point range--all on the road, of course. They were only really blown out once at Michigan State (78-35). Here is a link to their results--

http://www.umeshawks.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/mdes-m-baskbl-sched.html

Pitt fans who are constantly whining about the OOC would die to have MD Eastern Shore's OOC schedule--except with half the Div 1 games at the Pete. ;)

I would say you are being awfully generous with the reasonably competitive statement. Especially since a lot of these D1 opponents aren't very good themselves (Kansas St. Missouri, even Georgetown is pretty mediocre this year).

I don't like to correct the spelling mistakes of others because I'm sure I make enough of my own, but I'm curious: has Jimmy B been winning or whining on the sideline? He's certainly done plenty of both over the last 30 years!

I missed him last night, too. While he use to annoy me almost as much as Tom Crean, I've gradually grown to like him over the years.

Haha -- I meant whining so I just fixed it, but yes he's done plenty of both!!

Actually, he usually does his "wining" when "dining".

It's so great to see everybody here in a good mood. Well, almost everybody.

Huh? I'm in a great mood after last night, even making dumb jokes about Boeheim winning, whining and wining. Not sure how you interpreted that. Or maybe I'm the one doing this misinterpreting.

Yep, you sorta whiffed. Happy campers on here today. I think some eyes were opened last night....those last 3 minutes were fabulous. I didn't have you in mind at all. Happy New Year!!

I think I get it now. I'll be casting a suspicious eye at the help next time I dine at Morton's.

Ever since I’ve been watching Pitt hoops – well over 30 years now – Jimmy B has been wining on the sideline.

How about the ZOO......... He is balding..

Smith is the only guy on Pitt who has the potential to penetrate and dish/score. The Cuse had 3 guys who could do that .
