First, for your win vs VT today and second, for taking that awful "taste" out of this Pitt fan's mouth from last night's football game

The announcer crew was very good today. I thought their overall knowledge of the game came through right from the get-go when they commented about how significantly Pitt beat UVA on Friday. I also enjoyed how they dissected certain points to show what caused the score to happen (credit to ACCNx for having other camera angles)

I think that Fish got to see enough from his subs today and basically put in VVG to close it out at 3 sets. No reason to have the girls play a fourth set today. I looked for his post-game comments but maybe there were none. Was just curious to know how he felt the subs played. Va Tech "looks" better than its record. Their freshman OH looked pretty good

You made some good observations there.

It’s funny, I have had season tickets for football for nine years now, this is my second year for basketball season tickets and my first for volleyball season tickets. I can’t believe that I actually look forward more to volleyball than the other two sports. And I love football and basketball. These girls have captivated thousands around the area.

Loved how he talked about the weak/vunerable rotations and how the two teams attempted to play while in those rotations. I don’t follow it close enough to know what our weakest rotation is and I found the insight pretty cool.

Yes they did.....but the question is why? VT is not a good team. This match was much closer than it should have been.
  • VT normally gives back about 9 pts/set because of errors.....today it was 10....pretty much the same
  • Pitt gives back about 6 pts/set.....and today it was also 6....so just the same as usual
  • The reason the match was closer was our offense....Stafford hit .059.....Bayless .087.....together they accounted for only 4 pts/set
  • That is not good......was it because Buzlutepe's sets were off the mark? I wonder.
  • Without Babcock's almost 7 pts/set and VVG coming in late in the 3rd set and putting Bayless on the bench we could have lost this match
  • I hope Fairbanks is healthy because frankly....I don't understand the reason to rest the 'quarterback' of your team for an entire match when you are striving to win your conference and a national championship if she is perfectly healthy at this point in the season.

The women who comprise the volleyball team are not girls.

Fisher said he was just resting Fairbanks to keep her legs fresh. I'm not sure that the sets were off the mark, but she's so slow getting to the pass that it's easier for the defense to know where she's going to set. So no deception equals more blocks, lower hitting %.

Is Buzlutepe that slow and unathletic? I hate saying this about a female, as they used to say Mario Lemieux was slow too and he was deceptively fast because of his size…but could this be the case with her? At this point Fish surely has his pick of setters out of the portal and he picked her. That said, getting a good player to come here and be a back up probably isnt easy.

He got her very late in the portal process after the backup setter got injured and determined to be out for the year.

Pitt likes to play fast. short, deceptive sets to power hitters. This creates gaps and seams to power the ball through. With Nisa's speed, she really can't set like this. Rachel doesn't get enough credit for what she does out on the floor, but you appreciate it when you see Nisa, and setters on other teams.

Like @Chaos said, he picked her up late. She's not as athletic as Fairbanks but she's pretty talented. They've been using her to run a 6-2 and that's been working well.

Faster offenses take more cohesiveness to run. When you throw a jumble of players out there who haven't been playing in that rotation together, timing and speed is going to suffer. Torrey had a lackluster game but I don't see a reason to blame that on the setting. She wasn't as aggressive after a couple of errors early.

I wouldn't read too much into that game. It wasn't pretty but that's a pretty bad opponent that they were just sort of toying with. Was good to get some looks at some different things but there really isn't anything else to glean from that game.

Yes.....and all things considered that match was no fun to watch. Having to put VVG in and bench Bayless is not what Fisher wanted to have to do.....but we were in danger of dropping that 3rd set to a very bad team.....ugly stuff to watch. I'm over it.....move on.....UNC next.

I give Rachel all the credit in the world. Having played in college, the setter can make or break a hitter. Timing and communications are paramount. Nisa did not have either of those in this match. She also is slow processing the game which puts the pins in bad situations.
