I am sorry......you got to fire Jim Phillips, the ACC Commissioner. He has been an abject disaster. I know much of this is not directly his fault, but as we have seen in Presidential elections, sometimes the events and results cost elected officials their jobs. The ACC was an aggressor in the 2000's, with the Big East raid, then taking Pitt and Syracuse, but as we joined we got a chance to see behind the curtain a conference really run by hayseeds. The ACC hired Jim Phillips from the Big 10 (Northwestern) but he has almost acted like like a double knot spy for the Big 10/SEC in killing the ACC. Basketball has crashed and burned. Now football is doing the same.

As I said, yeah alot is not his fault but.....................he is the man in charge. You got to fire him and get someone else, just to change momentum, hell karma aka "juju" because Phillips seems to have the reverse Midas touch and everything he does turns to crap.

The ACC has to move on from this guy. It has become a complete embarrassment. And the networks and media and sycophants of the power 2 are preying on this.

The bowl results don't matter. ACC had a winning record vs B10 and B12 in the regular season when it counts. ACC football isn't nearly as bad as ACC basketball. In fact, I think the ACC is spending too much money on football and not on basketball. ACC Basketball has become the Atlantic 10 + Duke.

SEC ang Big 10 plus a few others will be their own league in a decade. Pitt probably won't be invited, but they'll be in a league where they can be upper echelon. IDK

You used to be a favorite poster of mine, but you're now going on ignore with the rest of the mopes. Not sure what's happened to you since your prodigal return, but it ain't good.

Pitt played with a 5th string QB. UNC lost their QB on their 2nd series and ran the wildcat the rest of the game. Miami's top 2 pick QB sat out the 2nd half. Calm down. These games are meaningless in the transfer world.

Unfortunately, more top players are sitting out of games for the ACC as they prepare for bigger paydays from the diploma mills.

Bowl games are exhibitions.

The Chicago Bears were 3-0 in exhibitions this year, playing games with QBs who weren’t their starters…just like plenty of teams playing in these bowls.

No more or less relevant than any bowl game played outside of the playoffs.

1. Holstein
2. Yarnell
3. Lynch
4. Dugger
5. Diffenbach

What evidence do you have that Dugger was behind Diffenbach?

Genuinely curious, what more could Phillips do for the conference? The CW media deal was creative and at least produced a little more $. The ACC’s westward expansion created some stability, and getting SMU to join practically for free was nice. I also liked that we stuck with 8 conference games when we went to 17 teams.

I just don’t know what else a conference commissioner can do given the hand dealt to him.

Edit: The only thing I can think of is adding Big 12 schools when the SEC raided them, but I believe the data showed it wouldn’t help much.

The main thing that Phillips needs to do is keep the league together until 2036. If that means paying FSU and Clem more, so be it. He also needs to kick out BC and add UConn. That helps basketball and maybe even Football as UConn has more resources

Well that’s true. Also sounds a lot like the difficult job a Pitt AD has.

But when football and basketball are both struggling at the same time, people are going to point fingers at Phillips.

Football, I'm ok with. Winning record vs B12 and B10. 2 teams in CFP. Miami would have been in also if they didn't have a complete buffoon as a HC. Basketball - he needs to do something. Needs to mandate a minimum HC salary. Can't have BC, VT, Miami, GT, etc hiring lottery tickets this March.

I think he could’ve fought harder for FSU to make the CFP last year, but generally agree.

That’s true. That’s what I like about the Big 12’s Brett Yormark; love him or hate him, he sells his conference well. Phillips could’ve been on ACCN and College Gameday arguing for why the Noles should be in. Herbstreit started his campaign to leave them out even if they went 13-0 *before* their QB went down.

Getting 2 teams in the CFP was a win for the ACC. I would’ve liked Pitt to win their bowl game, but the reality is bowl games are a glorified exhibition.

They are but like I said, a shitty bowl season will feed a narrative and unfortunately narratives are what drives college athletics.

This hurts the acc and will just continue to drive its demise even though a ton of these losses are with players that haven’t even played all season.

This is an interesting idea. Does the ACC have minimum commitment levels for football, basketball, NIL, etc.?

Yorkman is a blow hard but he does drive the pr train successfully and pushes the narrative that the big xii is great even after they lost Texas, ou, Texas am, Nebraska, and mizzou.

They are really no better than the acc on the field and money wise but the national narrative for them is good. When the acc blows up I hope Pitt lands there.

I doubt it but I think for basketball, its so bad that something drastic needs done. They need to mandate a minimum HC salary of say $4 million. So if BC, VT, GT, etc want to hire the next mid-major lottery ticket, they are free to do so, but they must pay him $4 million. So if you are going to pay the coach of Hofstra $4 million, you might as well kick the cans on some proven head coaches.

Speaking of the meaningless exhibition games thing, have you guys caught any of these “Bowl Season” commercials promoting all bowls, specifically referencing the huge number of players that “opt in” and the bowls being “meaningful” to millions of fans, players, coaches etc etc?? Never seen anything like that before. That’s how you know with certainty that the networks are losing bowl viewers by the truckload.

No, it didn't. Those games were already sold by the ACC. ESPN merely sub-let those games to the CW rather than sub-letting them to Raycom like they used to do. The CW isn't paying the ACC for those games, they are paying ESPN for them.
Ok, maybe I’m thinking of what they’d get on the open market after 2027.

Seems like the post season basketball record, which has been second to none recently, hasn’t done much to gain respect once the next season starts. And that is counting wins and losses that actually matter.

Biggest issue is ESPN. Especially on football side. The ACC is supposed to have such a great relationship with their main national network but ESPN doesn’t promote and support the conference as much as even the B10…who they don’t even have a TV contract with anymore! Don’t believe me? Go look and see how many times Game Day has been on an ACC campus. Or even on on a site that included an ACC team. It will shock you.

One time this year…ONE! And it was CAL!

And it wasn’t much better last year.

Also tired of ESPN’s SEC sycophant talking heads tearing down the ACC non stop and every chance they can get. Miami loses two games to ranked teams and they finish behind a 3 loss SEC team that lost to Vanderbilt and got smoked by an 6-7 Oklahoma…and not one reporter points this out.

The conference is terrible at promoting itself! For far too long the ACC has sat back and let the B2 define the narrative with their enormous empire of lackeys in the media. They get no support and are an afterthought at their own national network. I seriously wouldn’t be surprised at this point if ESPN is looking to back out of the contract at the next look in period and then just move FSU Clemson Miami and UNC to the SEC. I can’t imagine that happening with the huge investment they made in ACC network. But crazier things have happened in the era of big corporate national TV

If the ACC really wants to survive they need to do a better job of coddling up to the national media and change the narrative. Perfect example is everyone is going nuts about the bowl record. But that is meaningless in the new CFP era and with all the opt outs players entering the portal right after the season. Yet no one is talking about the ACC getting two teams into the CFP and their earlier non conference records against the other power conferences. In basketball it’s the exact opposite. All the attention in on the bad metrics and early season bad non conference losses yet no one talks about the continued success in the tournament despite dwindling amount of participants every year.

This is all because the ACC and its members schools lack media savvy and either refuse to or can’t control the narrative the way the B10 and SEC do. And that does start with the top. Too long our commissioner is only defending against the narrative instead of taking the initiative, like the B2 (especially Sankey) does. He needs to be proactive and not so reactive moving forward.

Not to mention one of the best sports media schools in the country resides in the ACC. How many people at espn went to Syracuse?

You are buying into the false narrative. As mentioned the ACC non conference schedule early in the season was good against other power conferences. Bowl season means nothing outside of the CFP because there are so many opt outs and players entering the portal. If a three loss alabama won the SEC conference championshop game they would not have been the 12 seed and asked to travel to Texas for a first round game. They would have received a bye or at the very least a 5 seed and a home game in first round. And they lost to two 6-6 teams that were terrible. SEC is great at moving the facts around to fit their narrative.

How about hoops last year? Played well vs other P5 leagues OOC. Then played well vs those teams in post season.

But metrics….

Here's one thing. The largest cable system in the US is Comcast. Especially within the ACC footprint.

Here is a channel lineup.
842. SEC Network
843 Pittsburgh Sports Network (ex Fox Sports Pittsburgh)
849 Golf Network
850 ESPN
851 ESPN 2
852 ESPN News
853 ESPNU
854 CBS Sports Network
855 Big Ten Network
857 FS1
858 NHL Network
859 MLB Network
860 NFL Network
861 NFL Red Zone
862 Tennis Network (yes there is one)
863 NBA Network
1325 ACC Network

I mean.....how many channels between 842 and 863 could you place the ACC Network but they relegate it somewhere far down the dial. Ever go to a bar or something and have them try to look for it??

That's just an example of the ineptness. You could have worked with Comcast to get it on a more visible channel number.

I guess yes the bowls are exhibitions......1-9, that is 10% and that was Syracuse over a truly decimated Wazzou. I mean East Carolina with an interim coach beat NC State in a rivalry game. UNC lost and lost bad to UConn. We lost to Toledo. Put it another way, if the ACC was 9-1 in bowl games, we all would pounding our chests over it.

As for the Commissioner, no this is not directly his fault. But ACC basketball has never been more lowly regarded, and got bludgeoned by the SEC, and now this.......

You have to move on from Phillips. If anything, he is just bad luck, bad karma. Just awful.

Are people that dumb in 2024 that they can't find a channel on Comcast? My comcast remote has this cool little microphone button. I can say "acc network " and it automatically goes to the channel. Additionally all of my channels have multiple channels on comcast.
