** Um … whelp!

** I hope my Lair brethren know how seriously I take this “duty” of writing “the dribbles.”

** Often, during the day leading up to a game, I’ll think of a few themes I can write about, and I look forward to seeing how these ideas play out during the game.

** I had a theme walking up the Cardiac Hill before the game. I was planning to proclaim that my intention was to write almost entirely positive thoughts about the game in the face of what looked like what won’t be an entirely positive season.

** I intended to stand tall with these thoughts with the context of a not-so-pleasing 9 point Panther win.

** So again, whelp!

** And at this point, even trying to offer anything the least bit positive about this game would come off as nothing more than a ridiculous parody.

** Oh sure, arriving at the Pete was pleasant enough. As I walked onto the escalator, we were intercepted by a Pitt rep who offered me and my nephew special seats in the Club which included the accoutrements of the tasty buffet.

** But when we took our seats, it was clear why we were offered this luxury. There was probably no one else to whom they could offer this benefit.

** There weren’t 2,000 people at the Pete tonight. And this includes a fine showing by the Oakland Zoo of maybe 1,000.

** Maybe the fewer the better.

** Last year’s opening loss to St. Francis was a sobering reminder of what kind of bad result we could expect when our team didn’t come to play.

** I fear this year’s opening loss was an incredibly stark indicator of how little our Panthers have to bring to the fray.

** In other words, this loss was worse.

** I’ve previously resisted the thoughts of those who suggested this team might be as bad as Kevin Stallings’ second season. Now I’m worried we are in the same league.

** Sure, Femi and Big John are legit. Not stars, but real ACC players.

** But after that, I don’t know that the same can be said of any of the rest of our Panthers.

** Perhaps we will get a little bit better when Burton joins the mix. But it’s hard to see how a player who averaged 4 PPG last year makes much of a difference for a group so entirely in need of almost any real firepower.

** Possibly one can still be hopeful that somehow Will gets up to speed, but he still has so far to go.

** Unfortunately, despite his athleticism, Mo showed why he averaged just 9 PPG at Stony Brook last year.

** The rest? They just don’t seem like ACC players to me, even if I was somehow trying to be positive.

** One theme I’ve always tried to carry through any of my thoughts on the Panther Hoopers is that things are never quite as good nor quite as bad we fans think among the wins and the losses.

** I should have remembered this theme when I proclaimed “we are back” after the Duke game. In my defense, however, I did explain “we are back” only meant I believed we were once again solid contenders to make the NCAA tournament once again. Nonetheless, I jumped the gun.

** And it’s probably jumping the gun after one game to proclaim this team will go winless in the ACC like we were just five seasons ago.

** But this much I will say -- at least we started that 8-24 season with somewhat stronger performances than what we watched against the Citadel tonight. And there were more people in the seats for the home opener that year than there were this year.

** So if you want to feel better about this game, I really only have one serious suggestion. Join the Panther football team on Thursday and help cheer them on against the Tar Heels. That’s the best this hoops fan has to offer.

We once packed 12,508 in every night. Now our soccer team literally outdraws basketball. I invite all of you to see a real team play. Pitt vs ND at 5 tomorrow. ACC Semifinals.

It's painful. But that's why we are fans. We can't help but continue to support our panthers.

Who will they beat this year on the schedule? Maybe 3 or 4 wins total for the season?
Kind of funny you say that. There are the usual early season games against schools from small conferences, but most of the “cupcakes” this year are teams that have somewhat of a pulse. I’m not sure there are any they can just show up and sleepwalk their way to a win.

DT, question for you… I know you are probably in the say Top 10 of Pitt basketball fans…

Are you having trouble caring at all about this team/season?

I’m pretty diehard when it comes to Pitt football/basketball. On these boards way too much, go to as many games as possible, plan my days around watching these games, etc… but there’s just not much to really care about this year.

Stallings first year we were expecting an NCAAT.

Then year 2 we were okay with a reset and hoping to see some progress for a while until it became apparent how bad we were.

Then Capel came and once again we were cool with moral victories to see how X/Trey/Toney progressed. And kind’ve the same into Year 2 and some big wins early had us thinking maybe we can compete for say NIT.

Then last year with X/Toney/Champ it seemed like we really could be a bubble team.

But now? It’s been so long since we’re relevant. We’re not getting a better draft slot from sucking. Femi and Hugley seem okay but in today’s CBB environment and with Capel’s tenure history here, it’s no guarantee either of them are even back next year.

Jeffress is all hype and has showed nothing, and none of the other players seem to be ACC players. Sure Burton/Horton/Sibande all help but even those guys are just ACC role players at best.

So what is there to watch for and care about? Especially knowing that Capel will likely be back next year. Mintz is exciting but I just don’t think he’s good enough that he’s going to totally change the program in a year. The only other guy we seem to have any traction with is Buchanan… a PF who can’t shoot. Seems familar.

Am I supposed to be excited that we’re in good shape for Barnes or Gallgher, who are both years away???

Just sucks. And after today’s game I’m just having trouble even caring about any game the rest of the season. Which I’m struggling with because I’ve never felt this way about Pitt sports. At least not this early in the season. I went to many of the Stallings II games and was interested until close to the end.

Times like this allows you to appreciate the good times even more.

It's hard, but I'll support pitt (and steelers, penguins, and pirates) through thick and thin.

I’m going to have to think about how to answer this. I did not expect this game to go nearly this badly.

My advice is to be loud on Thursday and hopefully football finishes the year strong. It would be fun to play in a good bowl if it were to happen.

I'm actually surprised you offered up any dribbles tonight. Honestly, I'm just sad. I used to so look forward to the season and enjoying the ride. Now, there's nothing to look forward to. And tonight feels like an all-time low. I can't see how Capel survives what is likely to be an historically bad season.

I stopped reading at the 9 point win proclamation. There was no way that we were going to beat Citadel without Nike and Ithiel. The spread of Pitt -10.5 was a huge mistake and this was an easy take. If we have Nike and Ithiel, we may have won by 9.

Not going to beat many starting Jeffress and a freshman and playing a walk on 23 minutes.

All of the prognosticators and fans predictions were before Nike got injured and Ithiel got suspended. We are easily just as bad as we were under Stallings without these 2. With them, we would have been much better.

I don’t know if Olidapo and Payton can play, but I would bet they would score more than 7 points in 71 combined minutes.

I would also bet they would make it less likely we would get out scored on second chance points 16 to 4.

That's a topic that will obviously play out as the season goes.

I put the warning out Collier cant rebound well from his past history and its a major problem / concern. He had a DR rebound rate of 7% today which is horrible and we got hurt badly on missed 3s for put back layups. Payton's DR rebound rate was 37% which is very strong. The sample size is way to small to conclude anything for how the rest of the year plays our, but Collier couldn't rebound last year either, or in the EYBL before he entered college for that matter. He has a ton of athletic ability with zero rebounding ability. And Payton had a big rebound efficiency advantage over Collier in the Gannon game.

Oladapo isn't a good player. He is what he is, a small role player depth piece.

I maintain Gueye was hurt. He bumped knees a few minutes into the game and was noticeably limping right after it happened. Its more TBD how good he is this year.

As an off note, Santos had the 3rd highest offensive rating today at 92. That is just fine for a freshmen and actually quite respectable.

Ill also add that, defensively when I buzzed through some of the replay, we are awful both getting through screens and switching properly. And everyone was bad at this today.

That's a topic that will obviously play out as the season goes.

I expect Gueye to have good games and bad. My guess is more good than bad.

No problem with Santos. Right now, he is a better scoring option than Jeffress.

Just saying..

You can’t start Jeffress and Santos and play the walk on and Collier as much as he did tonight. That is way too much non and unproven scoring.

I am afraid if we don’t find more balanced scoring, Odukale and Hugley turn into I am going to get mine while they audition for greener pastures.

Started to see some of that as early as tonight, with Big John jacking up 3 late game threes.

Dont want a complete abandonment of team play.

Not to pile on DT, but your comment about "we're back" last year was on my mind after this game. Evidently, your declaration jinxed us and sent us into a tailspin that we have yet to recover from. On a positive note, you may be able to hire yourself out to cast the evil eye on hated rivals (for a fee of course). If you were half as effective on other teams as your were on our Panthers you would have a goldmine.

Cruzer

I jest of course....just trying to find a little humor in a completely dour situation.

Good and fair dribbles there DT, has to be a challenging task getting up for them after that opening game.

We had an opening game result like that last year and then turned it around for a brief period. Not as optimistic this year.

Just going by box score, Big John and Femi’s stat lines are highly positive. But wow, after that it’s a train wreck. MO’s star line is a downer after he had showed some reasons for optimism in the scrimmage and exhibition.

By far the biggest downer is Jeffress. Looks like he still has a long timeframe for development. Yeah, that relatively young age is still somewhat in play, but when you think back on all the excitement, perceived potential and optimism with him picking Pitt, the hope naturally would be that he’d be a bigger contributor at this point.

I am afriad Hughly will be the next for the transfer portal. Not sure how I would put up with 30 games like this.

Vader, do you think this is an NCAA Tournament team?

I stayed to the bitter end of all the Stallings games. Now…?

100% Hugley is gone if Capel is sent packing after the season. And forget about Barnes and anyone else from Brush or wherever Chet Mason goes given their relationship.

The new transfer rules should theoretically make it easier to build a program. But it looks like it’s having the inverse effect at Pitt. No way does Toney and X transfer if they have to sit a full year this season. It’s free agency and our roster is going to get raided. And for whatever reason, Capel isn’t participating in the portal real well or the way he needs to ascend the program

He doesn't have to play like this most nights. If he averages 12 and 8, he'll be able to name his team though some may shy away due to his arreat. If he plays like this most nights, he's in the draft in June.

Agreed, I think he will have a ton of interest. Maybe not from Duke but teams like Michigan State, good teams, will be all over him.

Is it possible to care so much that you just can’t care? That’s where I am right now.

Like I’m going to ignore the game Friday, not because I don’t love Pitt, but because I love Pitt too much to sit and watch that for 2 hours.

Most of the time I say players play and coaches coach. But this coach doesn’t have anywhere near the collection of players to compete. Having a couple breaks to some role-type players shouldn’t blow up the season.

I know we just played The Citadel but Hugley is very very good. Its easy to see. This kid will be one of the best 2 or 3 Centers in America if he stays all 4. He's only a sophomore but his skillset cant be taught. Good hands, good feet, post moves, can rebound. Defense looks like it needs work.

Its unbelievable we couldn't have more guys around him and Femi.

I stopped reading at the 9 point win proclamation. There was no way that we were going to beat Citadel without Nike and Ithiel. The spread of Pitt -10.5 was a huge mistake and this was an easy take. If we have Nike and Ithiel, we may have won by 9.
Can I get you to read if I change it to 4?

I basically just picked a number to signal a modest win. The five Lair writers picked an average of 10.

And for what it’s worth, I now think this game is perhaps even if we have Ithiel and Nike. That in itself is troubling.

With my bad hip, there’s an incentive for me to get out earlier to start the walk down the hill.

I deserve it. :(

Well, that was something to watch in person.

-Hugley was surprisingly effective against his less athletic defenders. Perhaps we have two ACC level players after all.
- Femi looked about as good as expected, although his "improved" FT shooting from the exhibition may have been a myth as he missed a zillion of them
- This may be the worst shooting team I have ever seen. Santos took so many shots, probably out of necessity, and made like one or two I remember.
- Again, Collier/Jeffress/Oladapo/Payton/etc., all athletic-ish bodies, but did nothing of note the entire game except one fastbreak dunk
- Pitt's entire offense is just dribble and pass around the perimeter and either Femi drives to the hoop or John does a post move. What the heck is Capel teaching in practice?? It was like a 2 man team the entire game.
- I must have missed when Mo got a little knicked up, but it felt like he barely played and Citadel defenders drove right past him for layups several times
- I agree with SMF, shockingly, that there is no chance Hugley will stay at Pitt if he continues to put up numbers

WVU is going to run circles around this team Friday, and I'm not sure how anyone can be optimistic about this season. It was like watching Femi/John and a bunch of intramural players play. And there was no crowd to speak of. For a season opener!!

EDIT: Okay, I opened the box score to look at the damage

Jeffress shot 1-10, Mo was 0-5, Santos was 2-8, Collier had the one dunk but only took 2 shots, and Ezeakudo played 22 minutes with no shots. That is bad. 4 baskets from *five* guys that played most of the minutes not including Femi/John. Four baskets.

A team like Pitt just can’t lose two of their better players at the same position , especially two guys who can score and expect much better results . Add Burton to this list and 3 of their top 4 guards are out .

The future looks cloudy if both Jeffress and Collier are disappointments . Both are young and least we not forget how bad Gary McGhee looked early in his career .

Even schools like the Citadel have guys who can play , teams like Pitt are supposed to have better players at every position than them . Unfortunately it’s just not the case at the moment .

How JC fills out this recruiting class and who he can sign in the early signing period will determine his future here .

Fan support at Pitt has nothing to do with loyalty it’s all about winning . Tacking on forced donations to buy season tickets works when there’s a demand for tickets .

JC has too much money owed to him for them for Pitt to walk away from him and then have anything left in the bank to attract anyone who can creat a buzz . Hiring an unknown will just guarantee an empty Pete until Pitt becomes a big winner in the ACC . Being a top team in the ACC seems like a dream at this point . Like I’ve said like it or not JC is Pitts best hope .

Relatively speaking last year’s loss was worse because we actually had top notch D1 players that should never have allowed St Francis in the doorway. The battle was bad but the war would probably turn out better. This year the team is poor going into war and WE ALL KNOW IT. So, yes, we lost a battle that I am not sure we should have won or not won. But this year’s war will be bloody and without mercy.
