The clock on Capel

Not necessarily him. I'll admit I don't know sh*t about who killer recruiters are right now. Just speaking in broad strokes that I think a staff like that could assuage some concerns and excite some folks.

Knight would come so cheap, you'd think part of the plan to hire him and explained to him would be that he WOULD have a Brinks truck for Antigua AND a former HC to be the X and O guy

It hurts for me to admit that Capel might not be the guy because I really thought he was. We had a solid 2 year upward trajectory, both in recruiting and on the court performance. 2020-2021, however, is clearly a step backwards in both. It's great that we won against Syracuse and Duke but the results on the year have been too uneven. And the fact that we lost Hugley and currently have zero recruits with several open scholarships is fairly damning for our potential next year. The comments, both at the end of last year and this year, by the coach and the team about not getting through to players/the team lacking effort are really scary.

It's difficult to say exactly where it went wrong. Personally, I think two of the major flaws have been 1) the staff is fairly weak (I think it was designed to protect him and not necessarily to compensate for his weaknesses); and 2) we're over-recruiting (we can't get guys like Cole Anthony to come here and we should have put more energy into more realistic targets).

It sucks. It really sucks. Last year and the year before they reminded me of the "Process" Sixers where they incrementally got better and better. Now they feel like the Sixers of last year that not only didn't seem to know what they're doing, they also weren't fun to watch.

There wasnt a 2 year upward trajctory. We lost 15 then 14 ACC games. The win difference was the result of more games and a much weaker league. The league was strong the first year

If I remember correctly Evans was offered a contract and turned it down then Pitt came to their senses .
They refused to give him a renewal contract. Vitale whinedabout it during a broadcast. I think Oval Jaynes was AD at the time. He never got a paid coaching job again.

When Capel was hired I thought by this point we would look like NC States Mark Gottfried teams by now. I’ll keep watching games and hope to see some improvement but more than likely it won’t happen. If at this point next season, the program is at the same point Capel is either gonna be dropping bags or packing his own.

I agree that Brandin would be a top candidate.
DT, I obviously value your opinion and would love to hear you elaborate on why you think Knight should be a top candidate. I hate to come across as negative toward him because of what he meant to Pitt hoops, but I just don’t think this is a job for someone who has never walked a day in the shoes of a head coach unless they offer some over-the-top street cred to major recruits the way that a Juwan Howard or Penny Hardaway do.

People have said here basically “if you can coach, you can coach”... well do we actually know that with BK? I’d love your thoughts.

There is no way to know if BK would be the answer. But we won't be viewed as a good job at this point. 5 bad years and weak recruiting means we will have to take a chance if a change is made. And all new staff.

He checks many boxes. Recruiting success (especially at Rutgers), natural fit at Pitt, rising up and comer, might be able to get him here at the right price. Brandin is going to get a head coaching gig somewhere sometime soon.

Having said this, I did not say he would be THE top candidate, but A top candidate. And as you stated, previous head coaching experience is a MAJOR criteria, and I would not be surprised if Heather makes it her top criteria.

But we are certainly getting ahead of ourselves. Coach Capel will be our Head Coach next year for sure.

Ideally, he gets a MAAC or America East job this Spring and has some success for 1-2 years before Pitt opens

And I would personally be on board with him at that point. Let him learn how to make mistakes, deal with the AD, deal with donors and be the CEO at Stony Brook or Hofstra first. All this said, I still think Capel gets it done here. I'm not as down on him as many others.

He would definitely be cheaper than Capel which probably would be important to Heather as she would be buying out Narduzzi as well in 2 more years when we keep going 6-6, 7-5, 5-7.

Fair enough, and as you mention, based on Heather's previous hires and her public comments about what she values in a head coaching hire, I do think she values previous experience and past championship pedigree as a player or coach.

He's not getting anything done. 3 straight seasons of playing terribly down the stretch and collapsing. Look at his coaching history, same crap at his other jobs. He ain't a good coach. Nothing is getting better, in fact when we lose out watch half our team go to the transfer protocol. Year 4 will probably look like a cross between year 1 and year 2. Not sure why you are so optimistic.

He wasn’t fired at VCU he was very successful there.
You are right but he was only 71-49. The next 4 coaches including Anthony Grant, Shaka, and Will Wade did much better with VCU. And Capel didn’t take over a dumpster fire either. He got Oklahoma because of his name.

Capels head coaching records:
VCU record: 79-41 (.658)
Oklahoma record: 83-69 (.546) **
With Blake Griffin
Pittsburgh record: 30-36 (.455)
Overall record: 192-146 (.568)

***So there is quite a pattern that he will most likely not win more than 15-17 games a year going back over his three head coaching stops.

He may but right now if there were odds on this, his odds of getting fired after Year 5 would be lower than making the NCAAT. There is very little evidence, 3 years in, that he will "get it done here."

You mean the odds would be "higher" he gets fired not lower.

Before he coached a game at Pitt you guys thought he was the beginning and end of college basketball coaches, some were worried about him heading to Duke if coach K retires, and now he's mud

Sure. He wasn’t as good as any of those guys at VCU. And either that or Dayton is probably the best mid major job. But he did start that run.

Even factoring in Griffin he’s by far the worst coach Oklahoma has had since 1980. The other 3 dudes made final 4’s. That’s a borderline elite job too.

Guarantee Brandin produces a team that gives great effort.

That would be a good place to start.

Gotta feel Brandin can identify and recruit what we need at the point.

Place to go next.
His jersey is hanging in the rafters and would love 2 be the HC of where he played. I wanted him hired before anyone else. I do believe JC will be fine here.....I hope!

Fair point
But Michigan has a substantial larger institutional support system . So taking their gamble on Howard - was hedged
With A former head coach , a holdover beilein assistant , and a nba coach

Hey, I'm not saying he's a slam dunk hire. But I am saying that him not being a college head coach isn't disqualifying. You bring him in for an interview and see what he says. I agree with the notion that he'd have to be planning on bringing in someone who does have experience as a head coach to be his top assistant. Maybe he comes into the interview with a great plan on how he's going to make it work, and you seriously consider him. Or maybe he doesn't, and you move on to other candidates.

But unless there is some slam dunk hire out there who contacts you as soon as the job opens up it doesn't hurt you at all to have a conversation.

Capel is gone after year 5, his teams collapse every year, the coaching has been poor and next year looks even bleaker. Mark my words, Brandin Knight will be the next head coach here. I feel it.

As I said, if they can pay him next to nothing and make it on the condition that he brings in a dynamite staff, then go for it.

I am still holding out hope that Capel pulls a Pat Chambers when he saw his time was nearing an end. He went out and got Carr and Stevens and it bought him enough time to turn things around

From what I read Capel is stubborn and won't change his staff. If that is true he's done. His tenure at Pitt will end after the 2022 season.
