The longer this search takes

We are on what, day 4 of having the vacancy? I'll start to worry if we get past week two. I'm sure some of their candidates are still coaching in tourneys. I'd rather they do their due diligence as opposed to hiring the first available coach.

The worse I feel about it

That's just ridiculous. Unless it was someone like Sean Miller, there is no way they do not interview multiple candidates. Since he is likely traveling to them, it is almost impossible to get this done in a day or two.

Pitt is not hiring a P5 coach, unless it's Krystowiak (Utah). Due diligence has to be conducted since they are not hiring for the name, but rather than what the coach will bring. Decourcey said it well...they are hiring someone based on their plan, not name. They can't worry about tickets sales over the next few months. They have to get someone to be successful over the next few years.

Was this post meant for another thread? It certainly isn't relevant to the OP

People were doing the same thing with the FB coaching search. After a day they started freaking out. We ended up getting Narduzzi.

It takes time to hire a candidate, especially if you want to be diligent and hire the right person.

The OP isn't feeling good about the search. As I've said in many posts, Pitt fans don't have the stomach for prolonged coaching searches; like their life doesn't feel complete without someone sitting in the captains chair.

So how is that not relevant to the OP?

R-E-L-A-X.
And since the decision was made Monday, and the announcement EOD Monday, the search has been going on for two whole days now, Tuesday and Wednesday. We are at the beginning of day 3, and word is that Barnes got on a plane yesterday.
He is hiring a coach to lead the program for the next 5+ years, not buying a quart of milk. I would be concerned if he hired someone so quickly.

He didn't say give it to anyone just to make it easy. His discomfort doesn't merit calling him a gutless wonder.

I think when Barnes said "Any AD worth is salt has a list...." and then confidently said he would hire an experienced DI HC with a track record of success, a relentless recruiter who ran an up-tempo offense and a clean/tight ship...he set a level of expectation that could easily be construed by some as "I've this thing essentially done and in the bag."

The "Duzz" wasn't hired in 2 days and it was recruiting season. Let it play out, nobody knows for sure who Barnes is looking at. Enjoy the rest of the tournament and speculate on which one of those coaches have been contacted.

For all anyone on this board knows it's already done. Our next coach is very likely still coaching in the NCAA tournament.

-Well that would be interesting if that was the case. There is only 1 Coach that comes to mind if you are suggesting active.

Or the NIT. I assume Bryce Drew is a candidate (he was named in the list yesterday). I'd certainly hope our AD talks to him before making a hire.

This guy gets it.

Even if Barnes had a list, that doesn't mean he thoroughly vetted all of them prior to JD TAKING THE JOB at TCU and had negotiated the contract terms with them such that hed have the guy signed sealed and delivered in two days. THINK PEOPLE! JD officially accepted the job this week. Its only been two days. Hell it would take at least a day to negotiate terms, and other day for the guy to have the contract reviewed with his attorney, assuming he only went after one guy. If there are multiple guys they have to arrange interviews with the top three, negotiate the contract etc. THat could take up to a week or so.

I think this will be done by Friday and no later than mid week next week.

Right. Also, it's obvious Jamie was feeling out the TCU job before we were done in the tourney, which most of us don't like. It would be hypocritical to expect Barnes to be negotiating with a coach who is still coaching in the NCAA or NIT.

Right. You don't interview someone, have them accept, offer them the salary and move on in one day. Hell, I started with a new company a year ago and it took over a week to negotiate the salary and terms. There was plenty of back-and-forth, and my job doesn't include a coaching staff with salaries.

Coaching interviews are complicated, as it usually involves keeping it quiet as there are staffs involved, in addition to players that were recruited to play for that staff for a few years. If a deal falls apart, you don't want to have to go back to your old school with the flirtation being public knowledge.

To reiterate, since Pitt is not hiring a huge name, more than one candidate will be interviewed. That HAS to happen. There are plenty of coaches out there that are "mid-major" hires that would be good fits. We just don't know who Barnes has contacted, spoken with, who has reached out to Pitt....as has been mentioned, we are going off of the media and who they think is on the list. Ziese mentioned a list, but also mentioned a few days before it that everyone lies. So the list that he was able to get is probably not accurate.

Most coaches don't come into the conversation while they are still playing. Their agents handle it up to that point.

Remember, Jamie and TCU were working on their deal as early as Feb 2016. It takes time to work these things out

I know - for real. Their AD is very good friends with JD. They have probably had a conversation about JD coming to TCU since DelConte was the AD. I am sure the "what if" conversation came up a lot.

Speaking of football as recruiting moves on there the Miller "fire drill" doesn't help recruiting in any PITT sport.
I hope we find the right coach but I also hope this search moves along quietly with as little drama as possible.
PITT athletics & communications should be able to ride herd on the 3rd party media outlets who might want to creat some excitement ( float rumors) for their own self interests!

The Miller "Fire Drill" was a media fabrication. Again, any AD worth his salt has to at least send out feelers to some logical home run candidates. Barnes and Pitt cannot control what the media reports and speculates on.

IMO the ONLY thing that counts is who they end up signing at the end of the process and how that individual actually performs. All the rest is noise. Theres not a school or organization out there that is gong to squash the hand wringing, rumors and wild speculation from fans and media who are paid to stir the pot.

The Miller "fire drill" was put out with his sweat soaked shirt. All that sweat and he still got smoked. That's bad for recruiting.
