But I wish him only the best moving forward, either in a transfer or going overseas. The few times I met him, he was very affable and polite. I hope he uses the education he got here wisely and stays out of trouble. God speed Durand.

Why?

We hardly knew the kid.

Suspended twice hurt the team big time this year by being suspended hung Dixon and coaching staff out to dry with his indisgressions and suspensions. Not sure what actions Mr. Johnson did to cause sadness Pitt Girl.

Not to be critical.

Now with that being said is the extra scholaship not Mavrick Rowann's? Now this is a good player and kid that can help this Pitt Hoops program out alot!

I wish him well too...But why didn't he just leave the team after the suspension? Can't imagine this season changed his mind wheather to stay or go, but maybe it did....But I did say when he was suspended that we probably have seen the last of him in a Pitt uniform.I wish I would have been wrong. On a side note, is this ever going to end? It's either injuries or someone leaving the team every year it seems...Even in recent real good years something always went wrong.

He is one of the programs top 10 never has beens

You see these kinds of kids in all programs - really talented, showed a flash, but just found ways to never actually get on the floor ...

Not saying he would have stayed on the straight and narrow, but that knee injury seemed to halt any momentum Johnson was gaining as a player. No knee injury, maybe no suspension, etc.

We'll never know.

I think both player & coach were expecting his return..

Something happened?? If Durand knew he wouldn't play for Pitt next year, I doubt he would have stayed at Pitt.

Re: I think both player & coach were expecting his return..

Education...doubt that he graduated...

If that's why he stayed....good for him....but a transfer NOW

will require more classwork at a new school, as he's likely to lose some credits. If he graduates this spring...he can play anywhere next year.

Well, I thought I was pretty clear why this made me sad when I heard the news - he seems like a really nice kid who made some poor decisions but most importantly, he was a Panther. I'm very partial to those who pick my University. No need to dissect it more than that. And how did he hang the staff out to dry? Isn't it a fact that he hurt himself more by staying this year? My logical, simple guess is he had every intention of returning but slippd up again. Like I said, poor decisions. I think we should let it go and move on.

Good point...

I agree that he SEEMED like a decent enough kid

But, end of the day you have almost have to put some effort into blowing it to end up where he ended up ...

Sad is a word that is used way too often on this board. There is a lot that is truly sad in this world but what happens with Pitt players or coaches aren't among them.

Hmmmmm......no, I meant the word sad.

Makes me sad, too. I truly wish him all the best and hope things turn out well for him.

What's sad about the situation is that he was given an opportunity and wasn't smart enough to take advantage of it. A lot of people are charming when you meet them casually but when you get to know.........

What reason do we have to support a kid who failed multiple drug tests and was subsequently kicked off or left the team?

Say whatever you want for the harshness of the punishment, but he blew multiple "second chances" and now leaves his teammates and his school scrambling for a replacement.

Nobody on this thread has wished him to be hit by a bus, but there's no reason we have to support what he's done either.

While everyone is jumping on the "pay the players" bandwagon, consider how much investment the university has made in Durand, and how much investment Durand has made in the university...

Re: Why?

Well he hung out thje coaching staff by not playing in games and coaches had to burn a red shirt of Cam Johnson when they would not of had too if Durand would of had his Chit together.

I'm all for giving seciond chances but not 3rd and 4th chances which Durand seemd to get and now now a last chance so bye bye not sadness is what i feel for him Cam Johnson should be pissed because his red shirt was burned even though he was injured.

Nice kids don't continually screw up

You make you won breaks and success in life Durand made his bed

Totally cool with your opinion. Just not sure why mine is being so criticized. I feel badly for him and I wish him all the best. A new start may be just what he needs. And the "nice" kids don't continually screw up statment? I know a lot of adults who are VERY nice and manage to screw up a lot. Being nice and screwing up are NOT mutually exclusive, even remotely.

It seems that DJ hung himself after given chance after chance after chance to get it right. It's his responsibility to stay in school, stay eligible and fulfill the requirements of his scholarship. He couldn't do it and that's totally on him. He's a big boy and he needs to move on. But being sad about it?? Like someone else said, there are far more important things in this life that could potentially make me sad. Some irresponsible, immature actions of some kid on a basketball team aren't included in the things that could make me sad. I just don't have the time or energy to be bothered with that.

Really? He didn't stay in school? I understand he was suspended as a student athlete but didn't realize he was kicked out academically.

Re: Why?

I think your opinion is being criticized simply because others have an opinion as well and, well, they just feel that actions speak louder than words, pittgirl.

I don't know one way or another if he stayed in school by his own choice or because of academics. I was making reference to the fact that these kids have certain requirements in order to fulfill the obligations of their scholarship. Academic, moral, athletic. I doubt he was fulfilling the academic part as others have said he never attended class and there were other suspicions. Morally, he took a banned substance in violation of team and NCAA rules. Athletically, he wasn't playing and may never have played again, depending on circumstances. He made those choices, now he has to live with that.

My commentary was that what he did and does has no effect on my life and I'm not sad or happy about what happened to him. It's irrelevant to me. He'll move on in some fashion and we'll likely never hear about him again. Which is the way it should be.

Again, that's fine. But it seems my OP really touched a nerve. Tough crowd here. I wish Durand the best and hope he gets his life straightened out.

I feel sad we recruited and gave so many chances to a selfish and immature person
