** When this one ended, I took a huge deep breath followed by a large exhale, and then quietly mumbled to myself, “thank goodness.”

** I love the stress of a good, tight basketball game. I don’t love the stress of a bad, close basketball game against an opponent when you don’t expect it to be close – in a game when you have to battle back from down seven at the final TV timeout.

** Of course, I’ll take it.

** But we also know this team is now clearly showing its warts on both ends of the court.

** Our first half defense looked a little too much like a carryover from down in Mississippi. We actually allowed Va Tech to look like a good offensive team, which they aren’t.

** The Hokies got plenty of open looks both from three and in close. And we let them operate with plenty of space and gather some confidence.

** We played better defensively in the second half, but it’s hard to know if that’s more because the Hokeis once again turned into the Hokies.

** Still, we have to give the Panthers credit for digging the ball loose for 5 steals down the stretch when they were needed most. And we also must credit the Panthers holding the Hokies without a field goal in the final five minutes, even if some of this was a result of the lack of poise by Va Tech.

** Again, I’ll take it.

** I’ll also take Jaland Lowe at the end of games. His team needed him and Jaland stepped forward to score 11 of the last 13 Pitt points.

** Nonetheless, this was never a good looking Panther performance on the offensive end during either half. We allowed ourselves to be mostly a jump shooting team for most of the game, which is not the kind of team you want to be when you are missing your jump shots.

** Just like Mississippi State, think of the times when the Hokies made a good interior pass leading to a dunk. Then think about how many times you saw the Panthers do this today. None come to mind save an Ish dish to GDG for a dunk near the beginning of the game.

** This was perhaps the only positive moment we saw from ether Twin in the first 20 minutes. They both had a rough go.

** But I’ll give GDG plenty of credit for battling hard in the second twenty and offering enough plays to help the Panthers win. In fact, he showed plenty of fight on the inside, including a tough offensive rebound and put back.

** And the block at the end is one of the biggest reasons a coach would want his length on the floor in the final moments.

** It’s clear that Capel is much more comfortable having GDG on the floor fairly often. This will certainly be a point of contention for Panther fans as this season progresses. But kudos to Capel for making the winning call today.

** Still, I hope we can use the next few weeks to get Amsal and Brandin more opportunities to gain confidence and get further up to game speed. This would have been the kind of game when successful extended minutes from either might have made a difference. But clearly the staff doesn’t think they are quite ready.

** Otherwise, it’s plainly obvious that this team misses Damien Dunn. I suspect they can win their next four without him. But I’d sure love to have him back in the fold when we take the court at Cameron Indoor.

** So we leave this night feeling only fair, if not unsettled, with where the Panthers stand at the moment. But we are indeed 8-2 and 1-0 in the ACC instead of 7-3 and 0-1.

** Once more, I’ll take it.

I mean, 59 points allowed, 36 in first half is far from awful. The story was offensive inconsistency for a 5th straight game.

GDG in a rough 2/20 slump from 3. Ish is now 5/27 from 3 the last five, though hopefully gets some confidence back today. Austin has been only real consistency, but glad Lowe finally took control.

Raise your hand if you thought Austin would be Pitt’s best 3-pt shooter after 10 games.

I totally agree that this team misses Dunn .

GDG just isn’t turning into the player I hoped he would be. Besides missing open looks he’s got to stop putting the ball on the court , it’s instant turnover.

I might be wrong, but it sure seems the ball doesn’t go Amsal’s way . This team needs him and Cummings to contribute.

It wasn’t pretty , but an ACC road win is big plus .

I watched the first half and switched to the soccer game at 3:00.

When the soccer game went to halftime I switched back to the BB game.

45 seconds left; we were up 1. Only points I saw scored in second half were Lowe's 4 foul shots.

Was surprised to learn that we hadn't won in Blacksburg in 21 years. There were plenty of good Pitt BB teams during that stretch so I'm counting this as a good win.

Successful road trip (3-2); let's close out the year with two home wins and enter 2025 with a 10-2 record

There was a gap when VT left for ACC so didn’t start back up until 2014 season after 2003.

A really ugly win is far better than a really ugly loss. So kudos to the team for waking up in the last few minutes and pulling it out

Normally I’d say every team had really bad games and when they win them often times it can serve as a pivotal moment is a nice season.

However given that this ugly performance came off of the embarrassing curb stomping at Starkville I’m not as optimistic

Lowe and Ish for sure are really good college guards. But it seems teams are now focusing on playing them really physical and keeping them out of the lane Right now there are just no other consistent threats to keep teams honest

The other major concern is I’m not sure you can fix the lack of physicality inside this team has shown.

I hope I’m wrong but we’ll see. Not completely down on the team but no longer thing they are a legit tourney team

I will say this…. Defense stepped up when needed in the second half

Or vt is bad and missed shots in the second half.

I’ll let the jury decide

Proves again that this Pitt team can't sit back and relax for a minute and expect to beat the good teams on the schedule. Yes, it was a win against a pretty bad VT team, but it still counts in the W column. Against most other ACC teams, this effort means a certain loss.

Dunn is a huge loss. But he will be back for the majority of the schedule and it will make a noticeable difference. In the meantime some guys get some experience. This team won’t regress. Pitt teams under Capel don’t do that anymore. They get better. Games like their are good. Learn your warts and still get. W.

Great stuff as always DT, much appreciated. 6-28 shooting 3s has to improve.

It's hard not to downgrade expectations at this point. Too many flaws are indeed showing. I don't want to doubt JC again after the last 2 seasons, but he's going to need to do some work to get this team to improve on both ends of the floor. The defense was pretty suspect before the Dunn injury, now the offense is suspect, too. We need to do more than just set a pick for Lowe and hope for the best.

We will be 12-2 going to Cameron and 3-0 in conference. I will take that.

I can't help but think this team is inferior to last year's team, and last year we weren't even good enough to make the NCAA tournament. Carrington and Hinson would be the two best players if they were still on the team. Defense as bad as last year, and this team needs some scoring that those two could bring.

Bottom line is this:

Without Dunn, this isnt an NCAAT team. You cant lose Blake and Bub off a bubble team, replace them with nothing (since Dunn is hurt) and be better. The good news is that we somehow won at OSU without Dunn and have a few nice wins with him so the resume is good for now. Also, we don't play a lot of games or significance until he's potentially back.

Dunn is such a big loss because you lose your top defender AND one of your "Big 3" on the offensive end. For a team that lacks the ability to keep guys in front of them, its like losing 2 players....because of what he means to our defense

No but you replaced Fede with Corhen, which is an huge offensive upgrade. You have a more mature Ish, Austin, and Lowe. Shooting will improve for GDG. Giving up 59 to VT is awful defense. I agree. Not sure what can be done to keep them under 55 next time.

They scored 36 in the 1st Half and shot 51%. Not that that's great but VT is perhaps the worst team in a bad league.

Corhen over Fede is an offensive upgrade but a defensive downgrade. A more mature Ish, Lowe, Austin doesnt offset losing Blake and Bub. Dunn is super important. When he gets back, this team can be better than last year. Just have to tread water until then.

It's because they aren't ready.

Did Cummings play again after that rushed left handed scoop shot he took midway through the second half? Not sure he did until Austin was carried off.

I agree it would be nice to get them more opportunities and game confidence, but neither of them has done anything to merit being in there during a close game. I'm with the staff on this one.

I wasn't impressed with our D against Ohio State and Mississippi State. I don't know what the analytics say about this year's team, but defense hasn't been Pitt basketball's strength for a number of years and I'm not convinced we've made big strides to expect much different results.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m with the staff too.

Capel and company need to figure out how to get them ready, because this team won't do jack without a bench come February/March.

But you could have said that about Cohren (sp), the twins, and ish. None of them desreved all the playing time they got. The twins and Cohren are killing the team. Papa and the 2 younger guys need to be getting a little more time.

Papa simply is not use to playing. He is only going to adjust the physical part of the game by getting more time on the court, where the other 3 has never shown it. You cannot have 2 bigs on the court, and they average like 5 RBs a game between the 2 of them, then asking your 2 guards who play high minutes, and to also be the top scorers. You could tell Lowe was tired. Its why he almost did nothing in the 1st half but pass the ball. Lowe and Ish are getting worn out from repeatedly driving to the basket, getting beat up by double teams all game, then asking them to lead the team in rebounding.

Lowe needs to toughen up if he wants to play in NbA. He is like 19-20. He should be able to play 40 tough minutes every few days. GDG had 7 rebounds and Corhen had 6. 3 offensive rebounds a piece. Do that most nights and they should win. Papa is a twig, just like twins were/still are. He comes in and fouls right away. He needs a lot of work.

This season is really showing that Pitt has completed their transition from a Big East team to an ACC one. The more the refs call the ticky tack fouls, the better they do. If the refs keep those whistles in their pockets, Pitt struggles.

Eastern KY was leading at Clemson halfway through the second half so hopefully we shoot better and get off to a better start
